Fallout from Owens and Goldberg

As expected, Goldberg made quick work of Kevin Owens to win the Universal title Sunday at Fastlane.

Several wrestling fans, including @cmarx123 on Twitter, wanted to know my thoughts.

While I understand the value of having Goldberg defend the title against Lesnar because their names are brighter on the marquee, it is still setting a bad precedent for the WWE in the future.

Vince McMahon loves bringing part-timers back for WrestleMania, and I do understand the concept.

But what is he going to do when there are no part-timers in 10 or 20 years?

The WWE is not establishing talent to star levels all that often anymore so who will WWE bring in?

I understood the idea of bringing guys back when WWE had to sell PPVs.

But that is no longer the case as fans only have to pay $10 a month for the WWE Network.

For @cminerd24, GoldbergĢƵ matches are so short because that is part of his aura and he isn’t that good in the ring.

Don’t look for him and Lesnar to go longer than five minutes at Mania, and Lesnar will win the title there.

That match outcome on Sunday, as well as Braun StrowmanĢƵ and CharlotteĢƵ losses, make no sense to me.

It was StrowmanĢƵ first pinfall loss since his push and CharlotteĢƵ first title match defeat at a PPV.

Why didn’t both happen at Mania?

Several fans emailed and tweeted about Fastlane, Raw and Smackdown.

“I want to watch Smackdown while I feel like I have to watch Raw,” said Bill Lofink of Fayette City, who prefers the “blue brand.” “Smackdown is the better show.”

Rude finally in WWE Hall

As reported in this column several weeks ago, the late “Ravishing” Rick Rude will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame over WrestleMania weekend.

A former Intercontinental champion, Rude would have been a WWE world champion in any other era than when he wrestled for the company.

He, Ted DiBiase, and “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig would have all been world champions had Hulk Hogan not been on top in the WWE during that time frame, and Rude would have been a megastar in the Attitude Era.

In fact, he was training to get back in the ring during the time when he died.

Rude, whose real name was Richard Rood, had local ties as he was said to be a distant cousin of Lou Rood, the former Belle Vernon Area and Bentworth football coach and current BVA school board vice president.

Smackdown in Pittsburgh

The WWE returns to Pittsburgh on Tuesday when Smackdown airs live from the PPG Paints Arena.

Plenty of seats remain for the show.

WWE star on radio

A surprise WWE superstar is scheduled to appear this Tuesday morning on the Bubba Show, 100.7ĢƵ morning show with Bubba and Melanie Taylor.

The exact time of the appearance is not known yet, but the show runs 5-10 so tune in!

I have known Bubba for 20 years and he is a great guy.

Melanie, I have known even longer as we went to high school together and she is one of the nicest people I have ever met.

KSWA running huge show in Pittsburgh

The Keystone State Wrestling Alliance is running its 10th annual Joe Abby Memorial Tournament on Saturday, March 25, at Spirit Hall in Lawrenceville.

The KSWA will also induct the 2017 class into its Hall of Fame.

This yearĢƵ inductees include noted and respected wrestling journalist Bill Apter as well as Frank Holtz and Pie Traynor.

This will bring the hallĢƵ number up to 24 individuals including Bruno Sammartino, George “The Animal” Steele, and Dominic DeNucci.

RYSE returning to Lemont Furnace

In a follow-up to its stellar show last month, RYSE is back in action at The Stronghold Arena in Lemont Furnace on Friday, March 24.

The top three matches right now are Lee Moriarty versus Ganon Jones, Jr., Joey Rogers takes on J.T. Smooth, and Brandon K squares off with Duke Davis.

Mania countdown continues

Mania X-8 saw the legendary bout between Hulk Hogan and The Rock.

For me, Mania XIX is the second best Mania of all-time and was headlined by the Lesnar and Kurt Angle WWE championship match.

The Rock and Steve Austin fought the last classic match in their trilogy with it being AustinĢƵ last match while Shawn Michaels wrestled his first Mania match in five years when he defeated Chris Jericho in yet another classic.

Mania XX was headlined by two amazing championship matches in Eddie Guerrero defeating Angle and Chris Benoit winning the world title in a triple-threat match against Triple H and Michaels.

Angle and Michaels stole the show at Mania 21 while both John Cena and Batista won their first heavyweight championships.

The biggest match at Mania 22 saw Edge defeat Mick Foley in a hardcore match.

Another wrestling death

Tuesday, “Outlaw” Ron Bass passed away at the age of 68.

Born Ron Heard, he was only in the WWE for a few years and his biggest angle was using the spur off of his boot to bust open Brutus Beefcake.
