Hell in a Cell has the feel of a weak show

Smackdown Live presents Hell in a Cell tonight on PPV, and the show doesn’t feel important on paper.

And when you consider how well built RawĢƵ No Mercy was two weeks ago, no wonder this show feels like a throwaway. Just how weak of a card does the show feel?

Several fans emailed their respective thoughts, and Fred from Uniontown mirrored most of the views.

“Which match or matches on this card are supposed to make me want to watch,” he said. “There is nothing on this card that will draw new fans in and keep them.”

Jinder Mahal, who is sliding down a slippery slope of irrelevance as WWE champion, defends the title against Shinsuke Nakamura.

Could WWE pull the quick trigger and crown Nakamura?

A.J. Styles defends the U.S. title against Baron Corbin, Natalya defends the womenĢƵ title against Charlotte Flair, and The New Day defends the tag titles against The UsoĢƵ in a Hell in a Cell match.

The other Cell match is Shane McMahon against Kevin Owens, and the two non-title matches announced are Rusev against Randy Orton and Bobby Roode versus Dolph Ziggler.

The McMahon and Owens Cell match has the stipulations that pinfalls can count anywhere inside the cell, so I expect some kind of crazy finish.

A little known fact about McMahon is that he has not won a televised WWE match since 2006 when he defeated Shawn Michaels.

Looking at the card, it is easy to guess that the elevation of Roode will continue, but with so many of the matches being rematches that we have seen before, and some of them many times, the show seems to have a stale feel.

Maybe I will be completely wrong and the show will deliver, and for the long-term health of the brand, it is needed.

One positive is that one of the more entertaining segments on Smackdown Live the last few months, The Fashion Files, returns tonight.

WWE bringing back legendary WCW match

For years, older WWE fans have clamored for the company to bring back War Games, one of WCWĢƵ main staples. War Games is a concept where two rings are set up and surrounded by a massive steel cage.

Well, it is returning next month.

It was announced Wednesday night at the NXT tapings by Commissioner William Regal that War Games will take place at NXT TakeOver: Houston during Survivor Series Weekend.

Pro wrestling class coming to local college

This Wednesday is the first of two classes being offered at the CCAC North campus on the history of professional wrestling in the Pittsburgh area.

Tom Leturgey is the professor who will facilitate and proctor the class with the second class taking place next Wednesday. The classes will begin at 6:30 p.m. and last three hours.

“It has been very enjoyable to compile some truly interesting facts about professional wrestling in Pittsburgh,” he said. “I think the class will be a good, informative time.”

A reporter in Pittsburgh for more than 20 years, Leturgey currently serves as ring announcer for the Keystone State Wrestling Alliance (KSWA) and is also an editor for several pro wrestling websites.

Leturgey, a Cal U grad, has contributed to www.1wrestling.com, World of Wrestling online, the Pittsburgh Sporting News, and The Patch, among other sites.

For more information on the class or to register, visit www.ccac.edu/community-education/ or call (412) 788-7507. Tom can be reached at tom.leturgey@gmail.com for more information.

On this date …

There have been no major news stories in wrestling history on Oct. 8, but on the 9th, some guy named Powerhouse Hughes was born!

Thanks for my “special day,” Mom!

This weekĢƵ question

Why has Smackdown Live been drawing so poorly? There have been pictures of less than full arenas the last few weeks. Tommy, Waynesburg.

Over the last several weeks, Raw and Smackdown Live have emanated on the west coast and with both starting at 8 p.m. EST, that means the shows begin at 5 p.m. out there.

An example I will use is school students. If elementary schools let out at 4 p.m. and the kids get home a half-hour later, the preshow matches are starting at the same time.

With the cost of tickets, the start time locally, and the fact that fans can watch it on TV and order the WWE Network for $9.99 per month, I don’t blame families for not taking their kids.

For a look at some of the empty venues from the summer up to now, do an online search for empty Smackdown venues.
