Newell native hangs up cleats

Zach Guiser, a senior and captain on the Akron football team, has decided to step away from playing football after his third diagnosed concussion.

“In the Iowa State game (week 3), I took a thigh to the head and was knocked unconscious for a while on the field,” the Newell native said. “It was my third diagnosed concussion (between high school at Greensburg Central Catholic and in college), but there were at least two more concussions that I naively played through in my career.”

Even though Guiser is no longer playing, it doesn’t mean that he has left the team.

“I am serving my team in any way that I possibly can,” he said. “I have a duty as an elected captain to be a leader of this football team, and this injury does not change that.

“The methods in which I lead must be different since I am no longer on the field, but the end result must be the same.”

What is he doing differently?

“I attend all meetings and practices, travel with the team, and I am on headsets during games,” he said. “My role is to use my experience to provide insight, advise my teammates and be an extra pair of eyes for the coaching staff.”

Is it awkward for Guiser to be on the sidelines instead of on the field?

“It is difficult to sit out, because I love my team and want to be out there, but it is not awkward because my teammates are still my brothers,” he said.

Guiser finished the season with 16 tackles in three games and an interaction against Penn State in the season opener.

For his career, Guiser had 131 tackles, four interceptions, and one sack in 37 career games, including one pick

WVUĢƵ comeback

Down 35-17 to Texas Tech Saturday, the Mountaineers were close to seeing their Big 12 title chances slipping away.

However, quarterback Will Grier was having none of it as he threw four straight touchdown passes to close the game and lead WVU to a 46-35 win.

Grier was 32 of 41 for 352 yards and five touchdown passes to lead the comeback.

The win was WVUĢƵ first over an Associate Press Top 25 team in ten tries dating back to the 2014 season.

Pitt losing room for error weekly

Pitt was tied 14-14 at the half with 20th-ranked N. C. State, but it was outscored 21-7 in the second half and has now dropped five of its last six games.

More and more Pitt fans are starting to question Pat Narduzzi and his leadership skills.

He burned quarterback Kenny PickettĢƵ redshirt last week, then didn’t play him a whole lot against N.C. St.

PittĢƵ leading rusher on Saturday was Pickett, and he had all of 16 yards.

Narduzzi is going to have to get things moving in the right direction, or fans are going to wane on him.

Bringing in average recruiting classes doesn’t help, and if Pitt does not get things turned around this season, whispers about NarduzziĢƵ future will grow louder.

Penn State hosting Michigan Saturday night

Penn State is back in action Saturday after having its bye week this past weekend as it takes on Michigan under the lights for the annual White Out game.

While Penn State was able to rest up and recuperate, Michigan needed overtime to win at Indiana, 27-20.

The game is nationally televised and the weather looks like it will cooperate, so the environment will be raucous.

Penn State will have to score some points against a very talented Michigan offense, but the Wolverines have been struggling all year on offense.

Another key may be Penn StateĢƵ kicking game.

While its coverage teams and return teams have been doing well, Tyler Davis has been having issues with field goals.

Whether getting the kicks blocked or him missing altogether, Davis’ struggles could cause Penn State a game.

As predicted in this column last week, ESPNĢƵ College GameDay will emanate from Sate College and it is the first time since 2009.

This will be ESPNĢƵ 6th time coming to Penn State for its flagship college football program.

Hillen getting ready at PSU-Fayette

Recently, PSU-Fayette WomenĢƵ basketball coach Scott Hillen shared that he is excited to get the season underway, and he is looking to have more of a local flavor.

“I want to get some of the players from the area to come over to (PSU) Fayette,” he said. “I was impressed with several of the players in the Budd Grebb Memorial Basketball League and am hoping some will come here for an education and to continue their playing careers.”
