Extreme Rules tonight in Pittsburgh
The 10th annual Extreme Rules takes place tonight at PPG Paints Arena, and it is the ninth WWE Pay-Per-View (PPV) to take place in Pittsburgh.
Rusev, who made his WWE main roster debut in the same building at the 2014 Royal Rumble, will face AJ Styles for the WWE title.
The match that should steal the show is the 30-minute Iron Man match between Dolph Ziggler and Seth Rollins.
The show, including the Kickoff Show, will have 11 matches.
Tickets are still available for the event.
Lesnar back to UFC
The worst kept secret in sports became factual Saturday night as Brock Lesnar appeared at UFC 226 and will face Daniel Cormier for the heavyweight title.
Lesnar was re-entered into the USADA testing pool on July 3, which means he can face Cormier as early as Jan. 8.
So it is a safe bet that Lesnar would drop the Universal title before heading back to UFC, and he is scheduled to wrestle at SummerSlam.
However, what kind of publicity would WWE get if Lesnar won the UFC heavyweight title while he was still the Universal champion?
VaderĢƵ biggest feuds
When we briefly looked at the career of Vader last week, we did so without breaking down specific feuds or matches.
We looked at how he held four heavyweight titles in four different countries at the same time, and he also held the All Japan Triple Crown and the UWFI championship.
In fact, with the exception of WWE, Vader had a run as the top guy in every promotion that he ever wrestled for.
Fans, and especially kids, were petrified of Vader and so were some of his opponents as he was known to work a little snug at times in the ring.
He broke an opponentĢƵ neck, although it wasn’t fully his fault, and Mick Foley, then wrestling as Cactus Jack, lost part of his ear in a match against Vader.
A legitimate tough guy, Vader had no issues roughing it up with opponents if they wanted to.
Just how tough was Vader?
In a 1990 match, Stan Hansen popped VaderĢƵ eye out of its socket and Vader finished the match.
The exchange can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzFR9T29PoQ. It does not show Hansen actually popping it out, but you will see Vader take his mask off and pop it back in.
Hansen also broke VaderĢƵ nose during the match, which led to Vader having surgery on it.
When Vader moved to WCW full-time in 1992, he instantly feuded with Sting, who was his greatest rival.
In a match that April, Vader was disqualified and Sting suffered a ruptured spleen and cracked ribs.
Sting returned at the 1992 Great American Bash to defend the title against Vader, and to everyoneĢƵ shock, Vader defeated him cleanly for the title.
How feared and hated was Vader?
In a feud between two bad guys, Vader was able to turn the hated Cactus Jack into a good guy.
VaderĢƵ other big feud in WCW was with Ric Flair, which led to Flair winning the WCW title.
GLOW review
The second season of GLOW on Netflix was a solid follow-up to the debut season.
The main storyline was whether the promotion would stay on TV or not.
I don’t want to give anything away so I will keep my review brief!
On this date:
In 2002, longtime WCW head Eric Bischoff made his shocking WWE debut on Raw.
Bischoff did not arrive at the arena until his scheduled segment with Vince McMahon, and only a handful of people knew Bischoff was going to be there.
BischoffĢƵ appearance floored many as he was always considered the enemy and almost put WWE out of business in the mid-1990s while running WCW.
Words cannot describe the reaction people had that day, and it caused legendary announcer Jim Ross to say something along the lines of, “Hell has just frozen over.”
Bischoff was brought in to play the general manager and when McMahon introduced him, they hugged on stage and if you have never seen it, find it online and listen to the collective gasp from the crowd as the duo hugged.
Moments before, Booker T saw Bischoff in the backstage area, not knowing that his former boss was there, and the look on BookerĢƵ face was priceless.
More WWE injuries
Fandango had surgery Tuesday on a torn labrum while Goldust had double knee surgery the same day.
McMahon makes list
It was announced this week that Stephanie McMahon made the list of AdWeekĢƵ 30 Most Influential Women In Sports.
This weekĢƵ question
How is WWE going to put on good enough episodes of Smackdown to make Fox happy once it debuts on the channel? Tommy, Connellsville.
I would not be surprised to see WWE do away with the brand split because both Fox, and NBCUniversal, the parent company of the USA Network, are going to want the top stars on their respective shows.
Now, even then, will that draw in high enough ratings on Friday nights to make Fox happy?
I guess everyone will find out starting next October.
