Wondering what might have been with a win
There is plenty of news to look at this week in the current collegiate sports landscape or of that in the near future, so letÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ get to it.
As I watched Game 1 of the College Softball World Series Monday night between Florida State and Washington and then Game 2 Tuesday night, I couldn’t help but to think about how well Pitt may have done in the tournament.
For those who don’t remember, Pitt was leading Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game when FSU won on a walk-off home run.
Pitt was left of the outside of the tournament looking in due to its strength of schedule, or lack thereof, but it is easy to wonder how deep the team may have possibly made it had it held on to win the game versus Florida State.
We will never know, but you still have to feel for the Panthers softball program.
PSU stays hot with recruiting
While the Penn State football program will be limited to approximately 19 scholarships for the Class of 2019 due to its recent success of signing both quality and quantity players, it has been on a hot streak as of late.
As recent as the Blue-White game on April 21, the Nittany Lions only had three verbal commitments for 2019. That changed as four-star guard Caedan Wallace committed while attending the Spring Game, and the momentum has picked up since.
Jaquan Brisker, the top-rated junior college safety, committed on May 17 and Devyn Ford, who is in the running for the top ranking among running backs in the Class of 2019, verbal committed on May 18.
Then, three players committed between May 20 and 21. Five-star linebacker Brandon Smith and a pair of four-star defensive backs, Marquis Wilson and Tyler Rudolph, made up the triumvirate.
The month of May may have ended, but the good news for James Franklin and his program did not as four-star defensive lineman Hakeem Beamon came on board June 1.
Penn State could pick up yet another commitment Thursday as four-star defensive back Cam’Ron Kelly will announce his intentions.
Penn StateÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ recruiting class is inching towards the Top 10 for 2019, but it will falter off due to being limited on the number of players it can sign to scholarships.
However, one should not confuse quantity and quality and the small class has already received verbals from several studs and potential studs.
Boff going to Chatham
Word broke earlier this week that Belle VernonÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵ Keira Boff, a multi-year starter and three-point sharpshooter, will play at Chatham.
She is the fourth senior from the girls team at Belle Vernon, who happens to graduate today, that will play in college. Key facilitator Taylor Kovatch will play at Waynesburg, defensive standout and spark plug Caitlyn Trombley is headed to Carlow and Rylie Campbell is headed to Allegheny College.
The fifth starter, and arguably the best all-around player on the team, Kelsey Green, decided to not play in college as she will focus on becoming a teacher at Cal U.
