Big week for C.M. Punk
There hasn’t been much news about C.M. Punk since he walked out of WWE in 2014.
This week, there are two big news pieces on the former WWE champion.
Punk and Colt Cabana won their defamation lawsuit against Dr. Chris Amman on Tuesday, which, for the most part, closed the door on the legal issues Punk was having with WWE.
Amman, a WWE physician, was seeking damages up to a reported $4 million against Punk and Cabana. When the verdict was announced, Punk and his wife, former wrestler A. J. Lee, began crying, while Cabana simply smiled.
Then last night, Punk fought Mike Jackson at UFC 225 in PunkĢƵ hometown of Chicago.
Moving forward, time will tell what his future holds.
Punk was doing media rounds for his UFC fight on Thursday and he said that he is done with WWE and done with pro wrestling, in general. Punk saved his the money he made from his WWE run and invested some of it wisely, so it is not like he will be looking to cash in and return.
Is he truly done with pro wrestling?
The hunch here is that he will return some day, but maybe not to WWE.
WWE would love to get him back, even if on a part-time schedule like Brock LesnarĢƵ, but Punk was outspoken when guys like The Rock came back here and stole someone elseĢƵ spot.
Then again, when the PPVs buys were up and the subsequent PPV bonuses were passed out, Punk didn’t complain about the bump in the bonus due to The Rock appearing and causing a higher buy rate.
BrockĢƵ next defense is against …
In last weekĢƵ column, we looked at how WWE has exhausted Roman Reigns and his title shots to the point that he is the modern-day Lex Luger.
Well, it appears Reigns is getting another title shot.
Depending on whether Lesnar signs a contract extension or decides to go back to UFC, the title defense could be at Extreme Rules in Pittsburgh or at SummerSlam.
For those of you looking to go to Extreme Rules, plenty of seats remain. Plenty, as in thousands.
If Lesnar leaves for UFC, look for Heyman to possibly be done with WWE as well.
Rousey key to WWE and Fox deal?
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Ronda Rousey being on WWEĢƵ roster played a big role in Fox negotiating a deal for Smackdown Live.
It could have very well been possible that had Rousey still been with UFC, the WWE deal may not have happened.
Another key factor is that WWE is rated PG and Fox finds it much easier to sell advertising than it would have with the more violent nature of UFC.
With WWE now having a lot more money to work with, look for the company to throw more money to potential crossover stars from UFC or professional sports stars.
BryanĢƵ contract situation
Daniel Bryan still has not signed a new WWE deal, although it seems a forgone conclusion. His current deal expires on Sept. 1, and WWE is not going to do anything major with him until he signs an extension.
A look at partial WWE script
Fans often ask how detailed scripts are for WWE shows, and last week, a copy of a script for a brief scene was posted online.
For those who wonder just how detailed WWEĢƵ scripts are, take a look at this one at https://bit.ly/2LAs2ys
For the sake of the employee who lost this script for it to be picked up by someone else, hopefully, it is never found out who lost it.
WWE agents, producers, cameramen and anyone else who are given scripts know that they are to guard them with their lives.
McMahon going “undercover”
Stephanie McMahon will be featured on the CBS show “Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition” on Friday. The show will begin at 8 pm.
On this date:
In 2002, Steve Austin walked out of WWE.
He showed up in Atlanta for Raw that night, but when told he would be losing to Brock Lesnar on the show with no build up to the match, he balked at the idea and left.
Austin has stated many times since that he should have handled the situation better, but he has always stood by his valid point that there was no reason that he, as the top star in the company, should lose to Lesnar without a story line.
Lesnar had only been in WWE since the night after WrestleMania so his run was barely two months long. WWE knew it had a megastar on its hands and wanted Lesnar to beat Austin as part of a mega-push.
By the time Lesnar defeated The Rock at SummerSlam to win the WWE championship that August, he had already demolished Hulk Hogan and won the King of the Ring tournament.
