Rousey, WWEĢƵ hot weekend

Last weekend was one of those weekends for WWE that when things are clicking, they deliver big time.

Saturday night, the NXT Takeover: Chicago event was special.

It always seems that the Takeover events, which take place the night before WWEĢƵ bigger PPVs, are off the charts and last SaturdayĢƵ event was no different.

The match of the night was the Street Fight between Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa with the latter being a must-see match.

Money in the Bank provided several solid matches, and the star of the show was Ronda Rousey.

The former UFC champion is quickly silencing critics about whether her skills would transfer over to the world of professional wrestling.

Rousey and Nia Jax stole the show, and things are only going to pick up.

No one could have expected Rousey to take off as fast as she has.

She won the match by disqualification when Alexa Bliss, who won the womenĢƵ Money in the Bank match earlier in the night, attacked her as she was about to beat Jax.

Bliss then cashed in to beat Jax with Rousey being laid out.

I want to make sure to give Jax credit as well.

Usually when new wrestlers debut, they are put into storylines with wrestlers who have been working at the craft for a long time.

But with Jax, she has only been wrestling for a few years and it makes the match even more impressive.

Other big outcomes were AJ Styles defeating Shinsuke Nakamura in a Last Man Standing match and Braun Strowman winning the menĢƵ Money in the Bank briefcase.

Is anyone else sensing Roman Reigns beating Brock Lesnar to win the Universal title only to have Strowman cash in and destroy Reigns to win the belt?

On Raw, several big angles took place but none bigger than Rousey being suspended for 30 days for attacking Kurt Angle.

Did anyone else have a flashback to Steve Austin from the Attitude Era when watching Rousey?

On Smackdown, Rusev walked out of an incredible gauntlet match to earn a shot at Styles at Extreme Rules in Pittsburgh next month.

Ticket special for Extreme Rules

Speaking of Extreme Rules, Ticketmaster has been emailing WWE fans about a “Me-Plus Three” bundle where if you buy three tickets to the event, you get a fourth for free.

Big Cass released

WWE announced Tuesday that Big Cass has been released.

Cass had been in hot water for a while with management and a few weeks ago, he went off script and it infuriated Vince McMahon.

There were other factors involved, but it isn’t surprising to see Cass released.

It is hard to believe that both Cass and Enzo have been released as they were ultra-popular in NXT and when they debuted on Raw the night after WrestleMania 32.

I was at Raw that night in Dallas and the place went nuts for them.

While released for different individual professional reasons, both situations were partly because of how they came across backstage.

Zayn has surgery

Sami ZaynĢƵ last WWE appearance for the immediate future was his loss to Bobby Lashley at Money in the Bank.

He had surgery the other day on his right shoulder and then he will have surgery on his left shoulder.

Zayn has publicly stated that he hopes to be back for WrestleMania season.

Legendary big man dies

Leon White, known best in the professional world as Big Van Vader and later as Vader, passed away Monday.

Earlier this year, White spoke out on social media hoping for a WWE Hall of Fame induction due to being told he was not going to survive much longer

While his WWE run in the mid-1990s was average at best due to the creative team not doing right by him, VaderĢƵ runs in Japan and WCW were powerful.

Fans were legitimately scared of Vader, and he was an old-school type wrestler who was as tough as nails.

More on Vader next week.

GLOW returns this month

Friday is the day for GLOW fans.

Season two of the critically acclaimed Netflix show GLOW, stands for Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, was named Best TV Series in 2017 by Entertainment Weekly.

The show plays off of the 1980s promotion by the same name and in the second season, it shows the wrestlers become local celebrities and it shows how they handle the fame with there being both good and bad results.

WWE blocks ROH

Two weeks ago, Ring of Honor announced that it was going to run a show at Madison Square Garden and even booked the venue.

The first thing that popped in my mind was that WWE used to have an exclusive deal with MSG, so I wondered if the deal had laxed.

It hasn’t.

Wednesday, word broke that WWE would now book a show at the Garden on the date of the ROH show, so WWEĢƵ exclusivity deal with MSG is still in place.

On this date:

In 2001, WWE ran the ninth-annual King of the Ring PPV and it was one of the better KOTR shows.

The semifinals and finals of the KOTR tournament were held with them being built around four friends in Edge, Christian, Angle and Rhyno.

After Edge defeated Rhyno and Angle downed Christian in the semifinals, Edge pinned Angle to win the tournament.

Also on the show, Angle faced Shane McMahon in a street fight, Austin faced Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho in a triple threat match, and Booker T made his WWE debut.

It is definitely a show worth checking out.
