Where do local teams stand in NCAA basketball tourney?
The NCAA March Madness brackets will be released Sunday on TBS, and where do the local teams stand?
West Virginia is a lock and its seed will be determined by how it does in the Big 12 tournament this weekend.
The ‘Eers could move as high as a three-seed if they win the tournament, but it they fall short, look for them to get a four-or five-seed.
If WVU makes its way into a three-seed, or if it is impressive in winning the Big 12 tourney and enough teams ranked higher than them lose, it could get a two-seed, but that is very unlikely.
Unfortunately for Pitt, it did not win a regular season game in the ACC and time will tell if a coaching change will be made.
While WVU is a lock to get in and Pitt is definitely out, Penn State is one of the teams on the proverbial bubble to get in.
Unfortunately, it appears that the bubble will burst on the Nittany Lions and they will head to the NIT.
While Penn State finished tied for sixth in the regular season and made the Big Ten tourney semifinals, a 21-13 overall record isn’t going to get it in “The Big Dance.”
Penn StateĢƵ best non-conference wins were against George Washington and George Mason, and while eight losses were by eight points or less, a Dec. 22 home loss to Rider will haunt the Nittany Lions on Selection Sunday.
A berth into March Madness can be looked at two ways for Penn State.
Had the team made it but lost in the first round, it may have helped with recruiting.
However, the team only has one senior on the roster and if it can make it far in the NIT, and maybe even win it, it would give the team momentum heading into next season.
Slagus, Bucknell keep rolling
The accolades and accomplishments keep coming in for Belle Vernon grad and current Bucknell Bison basketball player Kaitlyn Slagus.
Last week, the junior was named to the Second Team All-Patriot League, and she also became the 23rd woman in program history to score 1,000 points.
She did it on a free throw as part of her career-high 25 points against Army.
As far as the team, the Bison downed Holy Cross, 67-53, in a Patriot League quarterfinal Monday.
Slagus led the Bison with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her 24th career double-double in the teamĢƵ 12th straight win.
“It felt good to get the win and March is a different type of basketball,” she said. “We have to come ready to play every game.
“There isn’t much room for mistakes at this point in the season because it is one and done.”
The second-seeded Bison take on Navy, the third-seed, Thursday at American University in Washington D.C.
