WWE going backwards to move ahead?
For years, some WWE wrestlers complained that part-time wrestlers were being used to main event big shows like WrestleMania.
Wrestling pundits have said that by doing this, WWE was sacrificing its long-term growth for a short-term fix as popping a nostalgia feel was more important than giving main event spots to guys who wrestle all year long.
Well, WWE is going back to its formula of longing for the past to bring out fans.
Triple H will take on The Undertaker at the Super Show-Down show in Australia on Oct. 6 with Shawn Michaels being in Triple HĢƵ corner while Kane will be in his “brotherĢƵ” corner.
This will more than likely lead to a tag match at the Crown Jewel show in Saudi Arabia in November with it being Michaels’ first match in almost eight-and-a-half years.
Word is that Vince McMahon has finally been able to coax Michaels out of retirement after years of failing to get him to do so.
It may have something to do with the rumored multi-million dollar figure that Michaels will be paid for two matches with the tag match being the first and a Mania rematch with Taker being the second.
So while the full-time active roster continues to carry the company, WWE is once again turning to stars of yesteryear to create buzz.
Cell thoughts
WWE did it once again.
For years, when the company seems to over-hype shows, they never live up to expectations.
Last Sunday, it presented Hell in a Cell, and there wasn’t a lot of potential on paper for the event.
Buzz picked up earlier in the day before the show when it was announced that Brock Lesnar was backstage at the event.
He ended up interfering in the Roman Reigns Universal title defense against Braun Strowman causing the match to end in a no-contest.
There were plenty of solid bouts, and a new red cell was debuted.
AJ Styles retained the WWE title against Samoa Joe in an excellent match and Becky Lynch defeated Charlotte to win the Smackdown womenĢƵ title.
Also, the Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler versus Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose tag match was one of the better WWE tag matches in quite a while.
WWE wins in court
On Monday, all lawsuits against WWE concerning concussions, CTE, etc. were thrown out of court.
The ruling will be appealed, but it is a major win for the company.
Starrcade returns again
Last November, WWE ran a Starrcade show in Greensboro, North Carolina, and it was fitting.
Starrcade was the NWAĢƵ version of WrestleMania, and it actually predated Mania.
WCW continued to use the name until it folded.
Starrcade always seemed at home in the Carolinas, but when WWE runs its second version of the event, it will take place in Cincinnati on Nov. 24.
Mysterio finally signs with WWE
There had been talks of Rey Mysterio and WWE coming to a contract agreement as far back as January.
On Wednesday, word broke that Mysterio signed a two-year deal but he can get out of the deal after 18 months.
I expect Mysterio to stay on board for the long-haul as his 21-year old son Dominic has started training at Lance StormĢƵ school.
Look for Mysterio to head to Smackdown when he returns.
Banks, Bliss hurt
Both Sasha Banks and Alexis Bliss have been removed form the Mixed Match Challenge, at least for the short term, to make sure they are both healthy for the Evolution show in October.
Mixed Match Challenge
Speaking of the WWEĢƵ second season of the Mixed Match Challenge, it began last week.
Strowman and Ember Moon defeated Kevin Owens while Styles and Flair defeated Jimmy Uso and Naomi.
Matches continue this Tuesday, although the matches were not released as of Saturday night.
Pro wrestling class
The second pro wrestling class at CCAC North begins on Oct. 10, and there is a lot of buzz about the class.
Thomas Leturgey, one of the most respected pro wrestling historians in the Pittsburgh area, is once again teaching the two-week class on the History of Professional Wrestling in Pittsburgh.
On this date:
In 2001, WWE ran its Unforgiven PPV in Pittsburgh.
The main event saw Kurt Angle defeated Steve Austin for the WWE title.
This weekĢƵ question: Will Lita ever return to the ring full-time? Keri, Monongahela.
My guess is that Lita is well-beyond her full-time wrestling days.
While she could make an appearance here or there, I don’t see Lita wrestling weekly.
She is rumored to wrestle at the Evolution event, but her days of having a full plate are behind her.
