Maples break losing streak with 29-6 win
Zach Greene topped 100 yards rushing and scored a pair of touchdowns as Mapletown opened the season Friday night with a 29-6 non-conference home victory over Avella.
Greene gained 101 yards on just six carries for the Maples. He scored the lone touchdown of the first quarter on a 25-yard run and romped 65 yards through the Avella defense for a score in the second quarter.
A bad snap out of the end zone gave the Maples a safety and a 16-0 halftime lead.
Derek Tarolli hit Brandon Samol for a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter for the Eagles’ only score.
Landon Stevenson accounted for the Maples’ final two touchdowns. He scored on a one-yard run with 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter and another one-yard dive with 2:07 left in the game.
Alex Lipscomb was successful on 3-of-4 extra points for Mapletown.
The Maples outgained Avella, 263-115. Max Vanata completed 4-of-9 passes for 55 yards. Lance Stevenson caught a pair of passes for 30 yards.
