Antelopes shut out Southmoreland, 41-0
Southmoreland turned the ball over seven times Friday night and lost on the road at Avonworth, 41-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.
The Scotties opened the season at 5-0, but lost their last six games of the season.
The second-seeded Antelopes (11-0) advance to the quarterfinals to play New Brighton, who defeated Apollo-Ridge, 35-21.
The Scotties’ Zach Cernuto had a tough go, throwing five interceptions while completing only 4-of-20 passes for 40 yards. Ashton Navilliat returned one interception 30 yards for the lone touchdown of the third quarter.
Colt Harper led Southmoreland with 72 yards rushing on 12 carries.
Park Penrod completed only 7-of-22 passes, with two interceptions, but had 161 yards and three touchdown passes for the first three scores of the game.
Theo Newhouse caught a 29-yarder for the first touchdown at 2:53 of the first quarter. Jordan Rapp’s 27-yard touchdown reception was as the first quarter came to an end, and Trevor Faulkner caught a 26-yard scoring pass at 6:43 of the second quarter.
Newhouse caught four passes for 103 yards. Jax Miller carried the ball 18 times for 130 yards and a touchdown.
