BULLSKIN TWP. – The Elizabeth Forward boys golf team closed the first week of the season with a 214-229 victory over Geibel Catholic Thursday afternoon in a Section 8-AA win at Pleasant Valley Golf Club.
Playing in the second foursome, the Warriors’ Luke Boyer was medalist with a 2-over 37.
Gavin Madden shot 43 for Elizabeth Forward (2-0, 2-0) for the early low round, including a birdie-4 on No. 7.
“It was a rough one,” the freshman said of his first round at Pleasant Valley. “My putting struggled the most. Greens in regulation was a struggle. I had problems with my distance control.
“I did get used to the speed of the greens (as the match progressed). I didn’t have any three-putts.”
As for other aspects of his game, Madden added, “My drives were pretty good. The greens were the difference.”
Mitchell Vuick and Dom Donato both shot 44 to contribute to the victory. Julien Hredocik and Blake Hvozdik both finished with 46.
Seth Dolan had low honors for the Gators (0-2, 0-2) with 6-over 41.
Mike Miller posted a 44, but the senior said he had trouble getting any rhythm in the round.
“I couldn’t find the ball. My ball-striking was not there today,” explained Miller. “I was able to make up and downs, and make bogeys to keep myself in it.”
Miller said he played solid Wednesday against Frazier at Linden Hall Golf Course.
“I shot 3-over yesterday and was 9-over today,” said Miller. “My tee shots were not great. I hit a bad tee shot, but my second shot was fine. My misses were sporadic.”
The individual qualifier is on the horizon, but Miller said he prefers to focus on the present.
“If I go out and worry about (posting a round in the qualifier), I’ll do worse. With a clear mind, I go out and play better,” said Miller. “If I can consistently shoot that four or five over, I’ll be happy with that.”
Sarah Konieczny carded 46 for the Gators, and Aiden Holt and John Hess both finished with 49. Luke KalivodaĢƵ 64 was not used.
