Lady Mikes shut out visiting Chartiers-Houston, 3-0

Carmichaels first-year coach Cam Coffey and the Lady Mikes won their first match of the season Tuesday night with a 3-0 non-section victory over visiting Chartiers-Houston.

Carmichaels won by the scores, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21.

Avery Voithofer (10 digs, 23 assists, 4 kills, 2 aces) and Bailey Barnyak (10 digs, 10 kills) finished with a double-double for Carmichaels (1-1). Ashton Batis (25 digs, 3 kills), Brenna Walker (2 kills, 2 blocks), Pacey Pratt (7 digs, 6 kills, 4 aces), and Payton Plavi (3 kills) also had noteworthy performances.

Charleroi 3, Uniontown 0 – The visiting Lady Cougars swept past Uniontown for a non-section road victory in the season-opening match for both squads.

Charleroi won by the scores, 25-11, 29-27, 25-23.

Uniontown stats leaders were Maggie Campbell (4 aces, 5 kills, 14 assists, 3 digs), Lyric McLee (3 kills, 6 digs, 3 blocks), Khloey Wakefield (6 digs; Lauren White 4 digs), Ava Livingood (2 aces, 3 kills, 2 blocks), Ryleigh Jose (2 aces, 5 kills, 2 digs), and Lexi Humberston (6 digs).

Yough 3, Brownsville 0 – The Lady Cougars won in straight sets for a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.

Yough won by the scores, 25-14, 25-20, 25-21.

Brownsville’s Payton Evanchak finished with nine assists, four kills and three blocks. Skyler Gates contributed nine kills and three blocks. Ashley Evanchak had 10 digs, five aces and eight service points.

Laurel Highlands 3, Frazier 1 – Frazier won the first set, but Laurel Highlands won the next three for a non-section road victory in its opening match of the season.

The Lady Commodores took the opening set, 25-17. Laurel Highlands tied the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. The visitors carried the momentum for victory in the third set, 25-20, and fourth set, 25-22.

Laurel Highlands’ stats leaders were Jayna Fabrey (22 digs, 2 aces), Alexandra Mattey (17 digs, 16 kills, 2 aces), Lucy Baker (11 digs, 3 aces, 6 kills), Sara Reed (14 assists, 4 digs), Ayrianna Sumpter (2 kills), Callie Friend (3 kills), Yelena Ford (13 assists), and Diondra Brown (4 digs, 6 kills).

Waynesburg Central 3, Albert Gallatin 0 – The Lady Raiders shut out visiting Albert Gallatin for a non-section win.

Waynesburg’s Railey Bochna was solid at the net with 12 kills. Bailey Rafferty finished with 17 assists and four digs. Leila McCollum (5 digs) and Ani Cree (2 blocks) also contributed to the win.

Boys soccer

Beth-Center 3, Preston (W.Va.) 0 – The Bulldogs led 2-0 at halftime for a non-section victory.

Parker Amos, Nekoda Bundy and Evan Lowman all scored one goal apiece for Beth-Center (1-0). Amos also had two assists.

Luke Amon made five saves to preserve the shutout.

Ringgold 8, Albert Gallatin 0 – The Ringgold defense shut down the Colonials and six different players scored at least one goal for a Section 2-AAA road victory.

The Rams led 3-0 at halftime.

Jack Brodak and Izaiah Wilson both netted two goals for Ringgold, while Michael Stasko, Cody Scheponik, Nick Evans and Lucas Wukovich all scored once.

Ringgold goalkeeper Donovan Fortuna didn’t face a shot.

Mount Pleasant 10, Brownsville 0 – The VIkings scored five goals in each half for a Section 4-AA home victory.

Aiden Johnson led Mount Pleasant with three goals and two assists. Tyler Kurtz added two goals and two assists. Jarett Garn, Austyn Gross, Tyler Barron, Landon Stuart, Tyke Snyder and Lukas Showman all scored one goal apiece.

Grayson Gardner and Austin Duvall combined on the shutout.

Belle Vernon 2, Uniontown 0 – The Leopards’ two first-half goals stood with the Section 3-AAA match suspended in the 48th minute because of lightning.

Anthony Sawa and Jackson Pressel assisted on Trevor Kovatch’s goals scored in the first half.

Belle Vernon keeper Morgan Bunch earned the first shutout of his career.

Elizabeth Forward 7, South Allegheny 0 – Luca Valerio scored a hat trick in the Warriors’ Section 3-AA victory over the Gladiators.

Aidan Davis contributed two goals and Vinny Riccardi and Levi George scored one apiece for Elizabeth Forward (1-0, 1-1). Keepers Matt Johnston and Nick Moffa preserved the shutout.

Springdale 10, California 0 – The Trojans opened the season with a non-section loss.

Nate Dubas and Colton Gent both scored two goals for Springdale (1-0).

Boys golf

Jefferson-Morgan 225, Bentworth 241; Jefferson-Morgan 225, Fort Cherry 232 – The Rockets won a Section 3-AA match and non-section match at Greene County Country Club.

Urijah Teasdale had medalist honors for Jefferson-Morgan (4-2, 5-4) with an even-par 36. Clay Wilson shot 42, Brayden Ellsworth finished with 46, Brendan Wood carded 49, and Dayten Marion closed the scoring with 52. Jack Shaffer’s 55 was not used.

Ross Skerbetz had a solid round for the Bearcats (1-6, 1-7) with 1-over 37. Craig McDonald (48), Sam Wade (52), Corbin McMurray (53), and Wyatt Snyder (55) also factored in the scoring.

Jack Kitzmiller was the low man for the Rangers (2-5) with 3-over 39.

Shady Side Academy 206, Frazier 229 – Shady Side Academy was tough on their home course of Fox Chapel Country Club with a Section 8-AA win.

Eli Cernuska was the low man for the Commodores with 7-over 42. Travis Smith finished with 44. Aidan Hardy shot 45. Dylan Keilbach and Tyler Monack both carded 49.

Shady Side Academy’s Landon Mauser fired a medalist round of 1-under 34.

Uniontown 213, Charleroi 223 – The Red Raiders and Cougars took a break from section play with Uniontown winning at home on Uniontown Country Club.

Brody Schiffbauer led the way for Uniontown (6-1) with 40. Austin Thomas shot 42. Colton Mathias finished with 43, and Trevor Uphold and Elim Martin both shot 44.

Charleroi’s Levi Large shared medalist honors with 40. Gage Patterson shot 44. Ethan Hartley carded 45. Jake Corrin, Kaden Woods and Josh Chambers all shot 47.

Girls golf

Elizabeth Forward 184, Penn-Trafford 222 – The Lady Warriors kept rolling through Section 3-AAA with a home win at Youghiogheny Country Club.

Mya Morgan had the low round for Elizabeth Forward (5-0, 7-0) with 1-over 37. Sydney Boyd (45), Annalise Didjunas (50), and Alizabeth Leezer (52) closed out the scoring.

Ayla Moffa was the low golfer for Penn-Trafford (2-4, 2-5) with 50.

Girls soccer

Southmoreland 5, Beth-Center 0 – Aubrey Seder netted four goals for the Lady Scots in a non-section victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Megan Mehall scored the other goal for Southmoreland (1-1).
