Lady Warriors clinch Section 3-AAAA title

The Elizabeth Forward girls clinched the Section 3-AAAA title outright Monday night with a 55-28 victory at Belle Vernon.

The Lady Warriors improved to 11-0 in the section and 18-2 overall. Belle Vernon closes the regular season with a 6-6 section record and overall mark of 10-12.

Elizabeth Forward led 24-17 at halftime. The lead grew to 39-24 after three quarters.

The Lady Warriors’ Chloe Zombeck scored a game-high 17 points.

Caroline Lee led the Lady Leopards with eight points and 15 rebounds.

Laurel Highlands 60, West Mifflin 35 — Ayrianna Sumpter scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to lead Laurel Highlands to a Section 3-AAAA road victory.

The Fillies improved to 9-2 in the section and 17-2 overall. The Lady Titans go to 8-3 in the section and 11-6 overall.

West Mifflin led 20-17 after the first quarter, but Laurel Highlands held the home team to 15 points over the final three quarters.

The Fillies’ Aierra Jenkins scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Taylor Schwertfeger scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists.

Southmoreland 45, Ringgold 42 — The Lady Scots rallied from a 22-6 first-quarter deficit for a Section 3-AAAA road victory.

Southmoreland (2-9, 3-17) trailed 25-16 at halftime and then outscored the Lady Rams in the second half, 29-17. Ringgold played the fourth quarter with only three players because of foul trouble.

The Lady Scots’ Gianna Perbonish scored a game-high 19 points. Addison Jenkins and Naomi McNary both scored nine points for Ringgold (0-11, 3-17).

Albert Gallatin 57, Connellsville 35 — The Lady Colonials led through the Section 3-AAAAA game for a victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.

Albert Gallatin closes the season with a 2-8 section record and overall mark of 5-16.

The Lady Colonials held quarter leads of 13-5, 24-14 and 39-25.

Mya Glisan paced Albert Gallatin with 17 points. Grayce Panos scored 14 and Mikayla Shea added 13.

Elizabeth Painter led Connellsville (0-8, 4-14) with a game-high 18 points. Whitney Bobish finished with 11 points.

Mount Pleasant 51, Ligonier Valley 29 — The Gesinski sisters combined for 36 points to lead the Lady Vikings to a Section 3-AAA home victory.

Morgan Gesinski led Mount Pleasant (5-4, 13-7) with a game-high 20 points. Riley Gesinski finished with 16 points. Grace Arrigo also scored in double figures with 11 points.

Marlee Miller scored 10 points for the Lady Rams (2-7, 5-15).

Brownsville 68, Charleroi 45 — The Lady Falcons secured third place in Section 4-AAA with a road victory at Charleroi.

Brownsville improves to 5-4 in the section and 12-8 overall.

The Lady Falcons led 16-8, 33-19 and 51-32 at the quarter breaks.

Brownsville’s Zhariah Reed scored a game-high 26 points. Ava Clark finished with 16 points and Skyler Gates added 15.

Bella Carroto and Ella Sypolt both scored 12 points for the Lady Cougars (1-8, 9-11). Camryn Musser and Riley Jones both finished with eight points.

Yough 27, McGuffey 26 — The Lady Cougars held on for a Section 4-AAA home win.

Yough (2-7, 9-11) led 10-6 after the first quarter and 15-12 at halftime. McGuffey trailed 22-20 heading into the final quarter and held a slight 6-5 advantage in the final eight minutes.

Yough’s Autumn Matthews scored nine points. Taylor Schumacher finished with six points for McGuffey (3-6, 13-7).

Beth-Center 37, Bentworth 16 — The Lady Bulldogs returned home with a Section 4-AA victory.

Beth-Center improves to 7-4 in the section and 11-9 overall. The Lady Bearcats slide to 1-11 in the section and 4-17 overall.

Carmichaels 53, Frazier 43 — The Lady Mikes held a 31-16 advantage in the second half for a Section 4-AA road victory.

Carmichaels goes to 3-8 in the section and 4-16 overall. The Lady Commodores slip to 2-9 in the section and 5-15 overall.

The Lady Mikes’ Ali Jacobs scored a game-high 25 points. Megan Voithofer finished with 18 points.

Frazier’s Malana Burton had a double-double with 10 rebounds and 12 points. Allie Yauch scored a team-high 19 points.

Washington 60, California 36 — Washington cruised to a Section 4-AA home victory over the Lady Trojans.

Washington (10-1, 12-8) led 25-18 at halftime and then extended its lead to 48-27 after three quarters.

Rakiyah Porter paced California (6-5, 9-11) with 17 points.

Kaprice Johnson and Olivia Woods both scored 17 points for Washington, and Teyler Barnes added 15.

Geibel Catholic 63, Avella 36 — Emma Larkin and Ava Henderson both topped 20 points in the Lady Gators’ Section 2-A victory over the visiting Lady Eagles.

Larkin scored 24 and Henderson hit four 3-pointers to finish with 22 points. Ava Partridge added 17 points for Geibel (7-2, 14-6).

Ava Frank led Avella (2-7, 4-17) with 21 points. Haleigh Rush finished with 11 points.

Monessen 60, Mapletown 29 — The Lady Greyhounds scored 40 points in the first half to roll to a Section 2-A home win.

Hailey Johnson (14), Madison Johnson (12), and Sidney Campbell (10) all finished in double figures for Monessen (9-0, 15-4).

Isabella Garneck scored 19 points for the Lady Maples (3-6, 6-12).

Boys wrestling

Fort LeBoeuf 40, Mount Pleasant 28 — The Vikings’ PIAA playoff run came to a close with a loss in the preliminary round of the Class AA state tournament.

Hockey

Burrell 6, Ringgold 3 – Back-to-back short-handed goals in the first period propelled the Bucs to a PIHL D2 Division home victory.

Ringgold (9-5-0-1-1) maintains a share of first place with 20 points despite the loss.

Caden Doran spotted the Rams the lead with his early goal in the first period.

Burrell(14-3-0-0-0) rallied for a 2-1 lead on goals by Luke Mink and Dante Taliani. The Bucs then pulled away with a pair of short-handed goals from Aidan Petroff.

Doran’s second goal of the period drew Ringgold to 5-2. Landon Vaccaro cut the Rams’ deficit to 5-3 with the only goal of the second period.

Petroff capped his hat trick with a goal late in the third period.

Ringgold was held scoreless in six man-advantage opportunities. Burrell went 0-for-4.

The Rams’ Collin Moffett stopped 33 shots. Burrell’s Kooper Price made 26 saves.
