Connellsville swimmers sweep meet from Belle Vernon

The Connellsville boys and girls swept a Section 5-AA meet Thursday night against visiting Belle Vernon.

The Falcons defeated Belle Vernon, 113-60, while the Connellsville girls beat the Lady Leopards, 89-74.

Kasey Stanton (50 freestyle, 22.21; 100 freestyle, 52.72), Dalton Shoemaker (200 IM, 2:19.09; 100 breaststroke, 1:14.16), William Gillott (diving, 235.05), Jonathan Sapola (100 butterfly, 1:07.07), Corbin Hoffer (100 backstroke, 1:06.96)

Hoffer, Shoemaker, Braden Cross and Kasey Stanton won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.32. Cory Stanton, Hoffer, Shoemaker and Kasey Stanton finished first in the 400 freestyle in 3:46.17.

Belle Vernon opened the meet with Brian Nguyen, Tim Reda, Gaige Watson and Derek Milkovich winning the 200 medley relay in 1:56.69.

Reda finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.26 and the 500 freestyle in 5:15.96.

Connellsville’s Madelynn Johnson, Kassidy Callahan, Abigail Harvey and Kallee Maloy won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.44.

The Lady Falcons’ Callahan (200 IM, 2:24. 31) and Maloy (500 freestyle, 5:38.95) won one race each.

Belle Vernon’s Martyna Maley, Ava Bosetti, Megan Shusteric and Melina Stratigos won the 200 medley relay in 2:03.16. Grace Newbould, Maley, Stratigos and Shusteric finished first in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:00.98.

Stratigos (200 freestyle, 2:16.48), Shusteric (100 butterfly, 1:05.34), Newbould (50 freestyle, 27.48), Maley (100 freestyle, 1:02.07; 100 backstroke, 1:11.09), and Bosetti (100 breaststroke,

1:14.16) all had first-place finishes.

Girls basketball

Thomas Jefferson 63, Connellsville 42 – The Lady Jaguars scored 23 points in the third quarter to pull away for a Section 3-AAAAA road victory.

Thomas Jefferson (6-6, 9-12) led 26-16 at halftime and extended its advantage to 49-26 after three quarters.

Bailey Liska led Connellsville (0-12, 4-16) with 11 points. Whitney Bobish finished with 10 points.

Thomas Jefferson’s Laekyn Flinn scored a game-high 28 points. Flinn scored her 1,000th point with 5:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. Riley McCabe added 16.

Laurel Highlands 68, Ringgold 12 – The Fillies led 48-4 at halftime to roll to a Section 3-AAAA home victory.

Laurel Highlands improves to 10-2 in the section and 18-2 overall. The Rams slip to 0-12 and 3-18.

Aierra Jenkins scored a game-high 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had two assists for the Fillies. Aryianna Sumpter added 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Naomi McNary scored seven points for Ringgold.

Uniontown 53, Southmoreland 28 – The Lady Raiders held visiting Southmoreland scoreless in the first quarter to cruise to a season-ending Section 3-AAAA victory.

A’Kira Dade scored a game-high 22 points for Uniontown (4-8, 9-13). Geelece Ingram finished with 15 points.

Olivia Aumer paced the Lady Scots (2-10, 3-18) with 10 points.

Elizabeth Forward 72, West Mifflin 33 – The Lady Warriors capped an undefeated Section 3-AAAA schedule with a win over the visiting Lady Titans.

Elizabeth Forward improves to 12-0 in the section and 19-2 overall.

The Lady Warriors’ Chloe Zombek scored a game-high 22 points. Alyssa Terza (16), Kaelynn Settles (13), and Mia Sostaric (12) also scored in double figures.

Savaughn Wimbs led West Mifflin (8-4, 10-8) with 20 points.

Mount Pleasant 43, Apollo-Ridge 32 – The Lady Vikings outscored the home team in the middle two quarters, 26-17, for a Section 3-AAA victory.

Grace Arrigo scored 12 points and Nina Province added 10 for Mount Pleasant (6-4, 14-7).

Sophie Yard finished with a game-high 16 points for Apollo-Ridge (4-6, 8-13).

McGuffey 72, Charleroi 49 – The Lady Highlanders led 24-9 after the first quarter and didn’t look back for a Section 4-AAA home victory.

Bella Carroto scored 13 and Ella Sypolt added 12 for the Lady Cougars (1-9, 9-12).

Taylor Schumacher finished with a game-high 26 points for McGuffey (4-6, 14-7). Madison Gaso finished with 16 points and Libby Mallah added 10.

South Park 41, Yough 26 – The Lady Eagles were tough at home for a Section 4-AAA victory over the visiting Lady Cougars.

Autumn Matthews led Yough (2-8, 9-12) with 18 points. Monroe Polis scored 11 points for South Park (9-1, 15-6).

Waynesburg Central 47, Brownsville 43 – The visiting Lady Raiders clinched a share of the Section 4-AAA title with a win at Brownsville.

Waynesburg closes section play with a 9-1 record and improves to 19-2 overall. Brownsville finishes regular season play with a 5-5 record and overall mark of 13-8.

Kaley Rohanna led the Lady Raiders with 19 points. Addison Blair finished with 11 points.

Brownsville’s Skyler Gates scored a game-high 29 points. Zhariah Reed contributed 10 points and Ava Clark rounded out the scoring with four points.

California 71, Frazier 43 – The Lady Trojans closed the Section 4-AA schedule with a victory over the visiting Lady Commodores.

California (7-5, 10-11) led 13-6, 33-15 and 48-30 at the quarter breaks.

Gabriella McGavitt had a double-double for the Lady Commodores (2-10, 5-16) with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Allie Yauch scored a team-high 13 points.

The Lady Trojans’ Hayley Gibson (29) and Rakiyah Porter (22) combined for 51 points. Porter scored her 1,000th point in the victory.

Monessen 59, Avella 37 – The Lady Greyhounds finished Section 2-A play without a loss with a road victory at Avella.

Monessen goes to 10-0 in the section and 16-4 overall.

The Lady Greyhounds’ Sidney Campbell (16), Madison Johnson (12), and Hailey Johnson (10) all finished in double figures.

Ava Frank scored a game-high 22 points for Avella (2-8, 4-18).

Geibel Catholic 49, Jefferson-Morgan 25 – Ava Henderson led the way for the visiting Lady Gators for a Section 2-A road victory.

The Lady Gators finish section play with an 8-2 record and overall mark of 15-6. Geibel hosts Frazier Monday night in the regular season finale.

Henderson scored a game-high 18 points. Emmar Larkin finished with 15 points and Ava Patridge added 14.

Kayla Larkin and Ali Ostrich both scored six points for the Lady Rockets (1-9, 3-19).

Hockey

Elizabeth Forward 6, Central Valley 3 – The Warriors scored three goals in the third period for a PIHL D2 Division road victory.

Elizabeth Forward (9-6-0-0-0) solidified its hold on fourth place in the Blue Division with 18 points.

Owen Sabatini scored 2:11 into the third period to give Elizabeth Forward a 4-1 lead. Joey Wach increased the lead to four goals 40 seconds later with his third goal of the game.

Aidan Motil added an insurance goal with just over a minute remaining in the game.

Elizabeth Forward built a 2-0 lead in the first period on power-play goals by Josh Hill and Wach.

Wach scored another power-play goal in the second period.

Elizabeth Forward’s Andrew Weir stopped 25 shots. Gavin Husk made 21 saves for Central Valley (8-10-0-0-0).
