Braxton, Grooms, McLee lead Red Raiders to 78-65 win
Jamire Braxton, Notorious Grooms and K’Adrian McLee combined for 62 points Friday night to lead Uniontown to a 78-65 road victory at Elizabeth Forward in Section 3-AAAA action.
The Red Raiders (3-0, 12-0) led 16-13 after the first quarter and the advantage grew to 51-34 at halftime.
Braxton scored a game-high 30 points. Grooms finished with 21 points and K’Adrian Lee added 11.
Cy Herchelroath led the Warriors (1-1, 9-2) with 22 points. Isaiah Turner scored 16 points and Daniel Spence added 12.
Southmoreland 59, Laurel Highlands 53 – The Scotties rallied for the lead at halftime, and maintained the slim advantage for a Section 3-AAAA road victory.
The Mustangs led 16-12 after the first quarter, but Southmoreland (2-1, 12-1) pulled into the lead at halftime, 28-25. The Scotties outscored the home team in the second half, 31-28.
Ty Keffer led Southmoreland with a game-high 20 points. Ty Whoric added 11.
Shane Cayton (14), Ethan Koffler (13), and Antwan Black (12) all scored in double figures for Laurel Highlands (0-4, 2-12).
Connellsville 70, Ringgold 61 – The Falcons won their first Section 1-AAAAA game of the season with a road victory over the Rams.
Connellsville (1-3, 2-12) led 18-14, 34-28 and 53-46 at the quarter breaks.
Anthony Piasecki led four Falcons in double figures with a game-high 23 points. Kace Shearer (14), Bruce Giles (12), and Jayden Mickens (11) also finished in double digits.
Daryl Tolliver scored 20 points for the Rams (0-4, 3-11). Szvair Dungee finished with 11 points and Aiden Angotti added 10.
Charleroi 57, Brownsville 42 – The visiting Cougars outscored the Falcons in the second half, 34-22, to secure a Section 4-AAA road victory.
Charleroi (2-3, 6-8) led 23-20 at halftime.
The Cougars’ Bryce Large finished with a game-high 22 points. Jackson Keranko added 12.
Trent Wible paced Brownsville (1-5, 5-9) with 10 points. Jeremy Praster and Kaden Wimmer both scored nine.
Mount Pleasant 70, Waynesburg Central 53 – The Vikings secured the Section 4-AAA home win with a 24-11 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Mount Pleasant (4-1, 5-8) led 32-30 at halftime and 46-42 after three quarters.
Connor Pavlocak led the way for the Vikings with a game-high 28 points. Dante Giallonardo scored 17 and Chase McCloy added 11.
Dane Woods scored a team-high 17 points for the Raiders (0-5, 2-10). Alex Vansickle and Austin Surber both finished with 11 points. Alex Eck grabbed 13 rebounds and Cole Headlee dished out five assists.
Yough 55, McGuffey 42 – Terek Crosby scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Cougars to a Section 4-AAA road victory.
Yough (4-1, 9-4) led 12-8, 25-21 and 42-28 at the quarter breaks.
Austin Matthews and Ryan Westerman both scored 12 points for Yough.
Ayden Cunningham led the Highlanders (2-3, 11-4) with 17 points. Grayson Wallace finished with 15 points.
Fort Cherry 68, Carmichaels 35 – The Rangers led by 20 points after the first quarter and rolled to a Section 4-AA road victory.
Aydan Cunningham scored a game-high 17 points for the Mikes (0-5, 3-10).
Derek Errett finished with 13 points and Blake Sweder added 11 for Fort Cherry (4-0, 8-4).
Burgettstown 57, Frazier 47 – The Blue Devils rallied in the fourth quarter for a Section 4-AA road win.
The Commodores (3-2, 8-6) led 39-38 after three quarters. Burgettstown held a 19-8 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Dalian McManus led Frazier with 19 points. Brennan Stewart had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Zack Schrockman scored a game-high 30 points for Burgettstown (5-0, 12-3). James Leuice added 19.
Bentworth 54, Beth-Center 48 – The Bearcats held off a second-half rally for a Section 4-AA road victory.
Bentworth (1-3, 3-9) led 30-18 at halftime. Beth-Center held a 30-24 scoring advantage in the second half.
The Bearcats’ Lucas Burt had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Chris Harper scored 14 points and Ben Hays added 10.
Brody Tharp scored a game-high 20 points for the Bulldogs (2-4, 3-9).
California 61, Geibel Catholic 52 – The Trojans scored the difference in the fourth quarter for a Section 2-A home victory.
The game was tied after three quarters at 38-38. California (3-1, 3-10) outscored the Gators in the final eight minutes, 23-14.
The Trojans’ Noah Neil shared game-scoring honors with 21 points. Vinny Manzella finished with 20 points.
Gary Tarbuk scored 21 points and Tommy Kolencik added 14 for Geibel (0-4, 0-14).
Monessen 80, Mapletown 36 – The Greyhounds scored 49 points in the middle two quarters on their way to a Section 2-A road win.
The Maples led 15-12 after the first quarter. Monessen rallied into the lead at halftime, 39-17, and extended the advantage to 61-28 at the end of the third quarter.
Lorenzo Gardner scored a game-high 24 points for the Greyhounds. Timothy Kershaw added 14.
Roger Gradek finished with 11 points and Josh Mick added eight for Mapletown.
Girls basketball
Brownsville 62, Charleroi 47 – The Lady Falcons steadily pulled away for a Section 4-AAA home victory.
Brownsville (1-2, 8-6) led 30-25 at halftime and extended the advantage to 44-35 after three quarters.
Skyler Gates led the way for the Lady Falcons with a game-high 32 points. Ava Clark finished with 17 points.
Bella Carroto paced the Lady Cougars (0-4, 5-7) with 20 points. Ella Sypolt added 12.
Chartiers-Houston 47, Monessen 35 – The Lady Bucs led 29-18 at halftime on their way to a non-section road victory.
Monessen (6-3) sliced into the deficit, trailing 34-29 after three quarters. Charleroi closed out the victory with a 13-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Amelia Brose scored a game-high 16 points for the Lady Bucs (9-4). Ava Capozzoli finished with 13 points and Allison Wingard added 10.
MyAsia Majors led the Lady Greyhounds with eight points.
Women’s basketball
Penn State Fayette 45, Penn State Hazleton 39 – Penn State Fayette had a successful start to its PSUAC road trip with a victory over Penn State Hazleton.
Heaven Grumm led Fayette (3-5, 4-9) with 10 points. Abby Bickerton, Takiah Cheathon and Daelin Burnsworth all scored seven points.
Brianna Kennedy scored 12 points for Penn State Hazleton (1-6, 1-11).
Men’s basketball
Penn State Fayette 87, Penn State Hazleton 70 – The Lions led 45-33 at halftime and maintained the advantage for a PSUAC road victory.
Dasila Jones led Penn State Fayette (4-4, 7-7) with 27 points. Jahmere Richardson finished with 26 points and Torian Jenkins added 16.
Connor Rushing paced Penn State Hazleton (3-4, 7-5) with 24 points. Brian Rivera finished with 12 points and Kyle Artis and Dante Howard scored 11 points apiece.
