CharleroiÄ¢¹½ÊÓÆµ Shields strikes out 14 in 6-1 win

Charleroi pulled away with three runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 6-1 victory over visiting Smithfield-Fairchance in the first game of the Fayette County American Legion Baseball League quarterfinal series.

Charleroi was leading 1-0 when it extended the advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

Smithfield-Fairchance scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning.

Charleroi added single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.

Ben Shields went the distance to earn the win. He allowed one unearned run on one hit with two walks and 14 strikeouts.

Charleroi’s Tyler O’Neil went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles, and scored three runs. Shield had a double, single and two RBI. Andrew Sprinkle contributed a double and triple. Tyler Fisher drove in two runs.

Jason Myers had Smithfield-Fairchance’s lone hit. He also took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
