Belle Vernon opens FCALBL series with 7-3 victory
Belle Vernon moved into the lead in the bottom of the third inning and AJ Wardropper and Alex Nash made the advantage stand for a 7-3 home victory over visiting Charleroi Monday night in the opening game of the Fayette County American Legion Baseball League best-of-3 semifinal series.
Austin Hoffman and JB Crovak had RBI singles in the bottom of the third inning.
Charleroi scored two runs in the top of the first inning on Spencer Behrendt’s RBI double and Ben Shields’ sacrifice fly. The visitors added another run in the second on Jace Pager’s run-scoring single.
Belle Vernon tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cole Matusik drove in a run with a single. Jaxson Bozek had a sacrifice fly and the third run scored on an error.
The home team added single runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings.
Wardropper allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Belle Vernon’s Kayden Faychak was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.
Pager, Dan Verscharen and Behrendt all had two hits for Charleroi.
Fayette County League
Carmichaels 14, WBAC 1 – The Copperheads scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and didn’t look back for a Fayette County Baseball League victory.
Carmichaels (10-1-1) added four runs to its lead in the bottom of the second inning. The advantage grew to 13-0 after three innings.
Winning pitcher Gavin Pratt allowed one unearned run on four hits with three hits and four strikeouts in four innings. Nick Pegg pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit with a walk and one strikeout.
Jimmy Sadler had a home run and single, drove in two runs and scored three times in the victory. Gianni Cantini (triple, single) and Pegg (double, single) both finished with two hits. Forrest Havanis, Cantini and Pegg all drove in two runs.
Donovan von Fradenburgh had two hits for WBAC (3-10-1).
