Local teams fall short in WPIAL track playoffs

The Connellsville boys had the strongest showing Wednesday with a pair of wins in the WPIAL Class AAA Team Track & Field Championship at Norwin.

The Falcons defeated Kiski Area, 93-57, and Baldwin, 76-74, and lost to host and semifinal winner Norwin, 107-35.

Connellsville’s Bryson Edwards had a pair of overall first-place finishes in the high jump (6-1) and triple jump (41-3). Nicholas Rohal won the discus (164-3) and finished second in the (150-7). Glen Strickler finished first in the shot put (48-1½). Jonah Lindstrom was second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:49.

Elizabeth Forward lost all three of its meets in the semifinal at South Fayette.

North Allegheny, Butler and Penn-Trafford will join the Knights in the WPIAL final on May 7.

The host California boys went 1-2 in the Class AA semifinal. The Trojans defeated Winchester Thurston, 91-57. Carter Kent finished second overall in the 3,200 with a time of 11:27.98. Teammate Lee Qualk was second in the long jump with a jump of 21-3¼. Frederick Sherman placed second in the javelin with a throw of 136-11.

Hopewell, Greensburg Central Catholic, Quaker Valley and Ellwood City earned a berth into the WPIAL Class AA championship.

The Waynesburg Central boys dropped all three meets in the semifinals at West Mifflin.

The Raiders’ Jack Ricciuti (high jump), Mason Schroyer (pole vault), and Dalton Taylor (javelin) had first-place overall finishes.

The Laurel Highlands girls were defeated by host Norwin, 106-44, Upper St. Clair, 124-19, and Kiski Area, 115-25. Norwin won the semifinal for a berth in the WPIAL Class AAA championship.

The Fillies’ Shayla Dues (100 high hurdles, 16.97) and Neela Hill (high jump, 5-2) placed first overall. Isabella Baker finished second in the 800 in 2:28.43.

The Belle Vernon girls fell to Mt. Lebanon (127-23), South Fayette (119½-24½), and Oakland Catholic, 90-41.

The Lady Leopards’ Sienna Steeber (pole vault, 10-6) and Lily Shahan (javelin, 112-2) had overall first-place finishes. Alexis Baker was second overall in the discus with a throw of 83-8.

North Allegheny, North Catholic and Mt. Lebanon also advanced to the district final.

The Southmoreland girls went 1-2 in the Class AA semifinal hosted by California.

The Lady Scots’ Lexi Ohler won the 1,600 (5:20.45) and 3,200 (12:12.71). Megan Mehall finished first in the 800 in 2:27.75. Alexis Piovesan was second in the pole vault. Olivia Aumer was second in the discus with a throw of 82-3.

California lost all three of its meets, but several Lady Trojans had noteworthy performances. Hayley Gibson won the shot put with a throw of 32-11. Rakiyah Porter was second in the 100 high hurdles in 17.25 seconds. Ella Neil placed second in the high jump (5-0) and triple jump (39-2½).

Shenango, Fort Cherry, Quaker Valley and Knoch advanced to the WPIAL Class AA team final.

The Waynesburg Central girls defeated West Mifflin and lost to Knoch, Mohawk and Beaver. Kali Shriver (100) and Jaden Tretinik (javelin) had the Lady Raiders’ best placing by finishing third place overall.

Chartiers-Houston (girls) 99, Bentworth 38 – The Lady Bearcats came up short in a non-section meet at Chartiers-Houston.

Bentworth’s Madelyn Johns, Riley Nicholls, Amber Sallee and Jesse Laskey won the 3,200 relay in 11:53. Emme Orsatti, Elizabeth Wade, Laskey and Johns finished first in the 1,600 relay in 5:15.43.

Laskey (800, 2:47.32), Sallee (3,200, 15:08.74), and Wade (javelin, 82-7) placed first.

Chartiers-Houston (boys) 97, Bentworth 42 – The Bucs had the advantage throughout the lineup for a non-section meet victory over the visiting Bearcats.

Brian Mathews, Vitali Daniels, Charles Nuttall and Dillan Colbert won the 3,200 relay in 9:42.7.

Ryan Colbert (1,600, 5:31.8), Alex Rusilko (discus, 97-7; shot put, 35-6), Daniels (high jump, 5-0), and Ty Robinson-Todd (triple jump, 31-2) all had first-place finishes.
