Warriors’ Stokes sprints to gold in Baldwin Invite

Elizabeth Forward’s Connor Stokes sprinted to first place in the 200 and placed fifth in the 100 on Friday in the 50th annual Baldwin Invitational.

Stokes broke the tape in 22.24 seconds to win the 200 and ran the 100 in 10.99 seconds, edging Gateway’s Kenny Lewis by .04 seconds.

The Warriors’ Hunter Thomas, Thomas Fine, Dominic Cavalier and Patrick Burgos were sixth in the 3,200 relay in 8:17.52. Cavalier, Stokes, Thomas and Burgos placed fifth in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:32.65.

Burgos won the silver medal in the mile run with a time of 4:16.36. Chris Climes finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet.

The Connellsville boys had a solid meet with Nicholas Rohal leading the way by placing second in the javelin (166-8) and third in the discus (158-3). Glen Strickler finished eighth in the shot put (46-11), as did Kasey Stanton in the long jump (21-3½). Zachary Franks was sixth in the pole vault after clearing 12-10.

Southmoreland’s Adam Halinka won the bronze medal in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 39.90 seconds. California’s Lee Qualk was sixth in the long jump with a top effort of 22-1.

Laurel Highlands’ Matt Schwertfeger brought home a pair of medals after finishing third in the 800 (1:57.86) and sixth in the mile (4:25.28).

Charleroi freshman Braedin Lunger and Albert Gallatin’s Matt Gaborko tied for sixth in the high jump after clearing 5-11. Lunger also medaled in the 110 high hurdles (4, 15.09) and long jump (5, 22-1).

Belle Vernon’s Ryan Kent (6, javelin, 150-10) and Cody Gluszak (7, 142-0) both had top-eight finishes.

Uniontown’s Grace Trimmer placed fifth in the 3,200 in 11:15.71.

Laurel Highlands’ Isabella Baker, Bethany Byrne, Alexandra Mattey and Taylor Schwertfeger finished eighth in the 3,200 relay with a time of 10:24.86. Teammate Diondra Brown finished fourth in the 200 (25.97) and sixth in the 100 (12.67). Jaden Brambley won the bronze medal in the pole vault after clearing 11-8.

Southmoreland’s Megan Mehall finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 58.24 seconds.

Belle Vernon’s Tessa Rodriguez earned a spot on the awards podium after finishing sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 5:26.61. Sienna Steeber finished seventh in the pole vault with a jump of 11-2.
