High school baseball roundup: Vikings shut out rival Southmoreland, 10-0

The Mount Pleasant baseball team clinched the Section 4-AAA title with a 10-0 victory in five innings Monday afternoon at Southmoreland.

The Vikings improved to 10-1 in the section and 12-4 overall. Waynesburg Central (14-3) defeated McGuffey, 10-2, to improve to 9-2 in the section, but Mount Pleasant swept the section series last week and holds the tiebreaker for first place.

Mount Pleasant widened its 1-0 lead with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Brady Painter, Brady Poole, Dane Firmstone and Cole Chatfield all had a run-scoring single in the rally.

The Vikings invoked the mercy rule with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Jacob Kitz scattered two hits and struck out six in the shutout victory.

Ty Keffer took the loss for the Scotties, despite allowing only one unearned run over the first three innings.

Greensburg Salem 6, Yough 5 — The Golden Lions secured a Section 4-AAA playoff berth with a road victory over the Cougars.

Greensburg Salem goes to 7-4 in the section and 8-7 overall. Yough (5-6, 7-11) needed to defeat the Golden Lions in the series finale and have McGuffey lose to Waynesburg Central to slip into the playoffs.

Greensburg Salem scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning for the win.

Yough came back from a 5-1 deficit in the fourth inning with four runs in the fifth inning.

Tyler Martin sparked the Greensburg Salem offense with three hits. Peyton Chismar finished with two doubles.

Yough’s Zander Aird went 3-for-4.

Waynesburg Central 10, McGuffey 2 — The Raiders rolled to a Section 4-AAA victory over the visiting Highlanders to break a three-game losing streak.

Trenton Zupper earned the victory for Waynesburg (9-2, 14-3) with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. He allowed two runs on two hits. Zupper went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles, and scored two runs.

The Raiders’ Alex VanSickle finished with three doubles, a single, four RBI and four runs scored. Derek Turcheck had a double, single and two RBI. Ethan Kiger finished with two singles and three RBI.

Burgettstown 10, Frazier 0 — The Commodores were held to one hit in a Section 1-AA home loss.

Brock Alekson doubled and Tyler Morrison had a single for Frazier (2-9, 4-12).

Sam Elich drove in five runs for Burgettstown (10-1, 10-4). Carston Tkalcevic had three RBI and Wyatt Stevenson drover in a pair.

Charleroi 10, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Luke Camden and Justus Buckingham both drove in two runs for the Cougars in a Section 1-AA home victory.

Charleroi improves to 7-4 in the section and 10-6 overall. The Bucs go to 8-3 in the section and 8-8 overall.

The Cougars needed a win at C-H on Tuesday to finish in a tie with the Bucs for second place.

Carmichaels 21, Mapletown 3 — The visiting Mikes put the game away with 11 runs in the top of the third inning for a Section 1-A road victory.

Robbie Wilson-Jones and Colin Andrews both drove in three runs for Carmichaels (7-4, 11-4). Mason Lapana scored three runs and drove in a pair. Nathan Beringo had two RBI and scored two runs. Aydan Adamson finished with two RBI.

AJ Vanata smacked a three-run home run for the Maples (0-11, 2-13).

The Mikes needed a win in Tuesday’s rematch at Carmichaels to finish in a tie for second place.

Fort Cherry 9, Jefferson-Morgan 1 — Matt Sieg and Colton Temple both drove in three runs in the Rangers’ Section 1-A road victory.

The win combined with West Greene’s loss to California clinched the outright section title for Fort Cherry.

Sieg and winning pitcher Ryan Huey had three hits apiece for the Rangers (9-2, 11-3).

Grant Hathaway drove in the only run for the Rockets (4-7, 7-9).

California 2, West Greene 1 — Weston Monticelli pitched a complete-game, four-hitter as the Trojans upended visiting West Greene for a Section 1-A victory that dropped the playoff-bound Pioneers into third place in the standings.

California improves to 4-7 in the section and 5-12 overall. The Pioneers go to 7-4 in the section and 11-5 overall. West Greene needed a win in Tuesday’s rematch to finish in a tie for second place.

Montecelli walked two and struck out four while not allowing an earned run.

Spencer Petrucci and Eli Carpenter each drove in a run for the Trojans.

Losing pitcher Darren Knight also went the distance, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out 10. Johnny Lampe had two hits and knocked in the lone run for the Pioneers.

Washington 8, Beth-Center 1 — The Prexies secured a Section 1-AA playoff berth with a victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

Beth-Center (4-7, 8-9) needed to win the second game of the section series to pull into a tie with Washington for the final playoff berth.

Washington led 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning, and then scored single runs in each of the next four innings.

Clairton 8, Monessen 3 — The Bears built a 4-0 lead on their way to a Section 3-A road win.

RJ DiEugenio doubled and drove in two runs for the Greyhounds (0-11, 0-16).

Vondae Pearson had two RBI for Clairton (3-8, 4-9).

Bethel Park 1, Ringgold 0 — The Black Hawks scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a non-section home win.

Ringgold (8-10) was held to singles by Andrew Sprinkle and Gavin Angotti.
