SLIPPERY ROCK – SouthmorelandĢƵ Megan Mehall was not pleased with her performance in the 400, her marquis event, but rallied a couple races later to win silver in the 800 in WednesdayĢƵ WPIAL Class AA Individual Track & Field Championship.

The district meet was plagued by thunder and lightning, causing weather delay after weather delay. Heavier rain late in the meet also provided challenging conditions for the athletes.

The meet was eventually postponed with the Class AA boys lining up for the 800, so the 800, 3,200, 800 and 1,600 relay remain on the track. The field events to be finished are the girls Class AAA javelin and long jump, and the boys Class AA high jump.

The meet was scheduled to resume Thursday at 4 p.m.

Mehall and Trinity ChristianĢƵ Eilidh Edgar battled through the first of two laps in the 800, but Edgar was able to gain separation down the final stretch to win the gold medal in 2:14.76. Mehall finished in 2:17.22.

“I kinda crashed in the last 50 (meters). It just came down to her having a bigger boost at that point,” explained Mehall. “That was a PR in my 800. The 400 wasn’t my best, but I was working with the energy I had.”

Mehall said the weather conditions did have an effect on her.

“I wasn’t as confident I would be able to perform my best, but I gave it my hardest and did what I could do,” said Mehall.

Mehall earned a second PIAA berth with her fifth-place finish in the 400 with a time of 58.91 seconds.

She also ran the anchor leg of the 3,200 relay that also earned a state berth by placing fourth in 9:56.02.The Lady Scots were seeded sixth coming into the WPIAL final.

Kate Campbell ran the opening leg. Aubrey Seder was second and Lexi Ohler was the third leg.

Campbell noted her job was “just to get a good start and try to put us in a good spot so we can medal and go to states.

“I had a PR. I had a 2:27. I’m happy with that now.”

Campbell said the quartetĢƵ plan was pretty simple, saying, “We wanted to go to states and get in the top six. We also had a few teams (Quaker Valley and Winchester Thurston) we’ve wanted to beat for a while. We beat them.”

Laurel Highlands’ Jaden Brambley was able to complete the Class AAA pole vault competition before the weather arrived and she made the most of the conditions by winning the bronze medal with a vault of 11-6.

“I was clear at 11 feet and 11-6,” said Brambley. “I was really close at 12 feet. I caught it on the backside. I was over (the bar) and came down on it.”

Brambley added, “I’m super excited. I wanted to get 12. (Clearing 12 feet) is the goal next week (at the state meet).”

Charleroi first-year sophomore Eden Smith advanced to the state meet after placing fifth in the 100 high hurdles in a time of 16.14 seconds.

“I was nervous,” Smith said of her first district meet.

Geibel Catholic sophomore Emma Larkin entered the 300 intermediate hurdles with the fastest seed time in Class AA. However, Larkin was charged with a false start so she never had the opportunity to defend her time.

Larkin gathered herself in time for the 800, though, and was able to win a medal and a PIAA berth after finishing sixth in 2:22.64.

CaliforniaĢƵ Ella Neil earned her second trip to Shippensburg after she finished seventh in the Class AA high jump with a state-qualifying height of 5-2.

“(5-2) is my best. ItĢƵ also state qualifying,” said Neil. “I’m very grateful to be here again. I got 5-2 on my last attempt.

“Going through my head at that moment, I didn’t want my season to end here. I didn’t want to come here for nothing. Seeing everyone else succeed here really pushed me, and succeed, as well.

“I’m so happy.”

Neil needed only one attempt at the opening height of 4-10. She needed two attempts at five feet.

Neil was busy running between the high jump and triple jump pits.

“I had to run back and forth from triple (jump), which was stressful, but I got some decent marks in triple, as well,” said Neil.

Neil has her sights set higher for the state meet.

“I’m looking to clear 5-2 consistently and I feel 5-4 is not far off,” added Neil.
