Gonglik strikes out 15 in Lady Bearcats鈥� 8-1 victory
Sydney Gonglik struck out 15 and went 3-for-3 to lead Bentworth to an 8-1 victory over Shenango Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the WPIAL Class AA softball playoffs.
Bentworth (15-2) plays Laurel in the semifinals. The Lady Spartans (17-4) defeated Charleroi, 4-0.
Gonglik allowed one unearned run on three hits for the No. 2 seed.
Nora Lindley also went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs for the Lady Bearcats. Kayla O’Dell had a double and RBI, and teammate finished with two singles and an RBI.
Laurel 4, Charleroi 0 — Autumn Boyd allowed only two hits, walked one and struck out 13 in the Lady Spartans’ victory over Charleroi.
Laurel finished with 10 hits, including three each from Addie Deal and Hayden Seifert. Deal drove in two runs and Seifert had an RBI.
Losing pitcher Sofia Celaschi struck out seven for the Lady Cougars (14-5).
Avonworth 4, Yough 0 — The Lady Antelopes’ Alivia Lantzy struck out 10 and allowed Yough just one hit in a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal victory at Plum.
The two-time defending champions improves to 14-3 over and advances to play Mohawk in the semifinals.
Avonworth pulled out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Yough (9-5) had its best chance to score after Makayla Spoonhoward walked and Maddie Horvat doubled her to third with no outs. Kaylin Ritenour walked with two outs to load the bases.
Lantzy wiggled out of the jam with an infield pop fly.
Avonworth’s Jayla Jones tacked on a couple more runs with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Union 11, Jefferson-Morgan 2 – Mia Preuhs allowed two unearned runs on two hits and struck out 15 as the top-seeded Lady Scotties advanced to the WPIAL Class A semifinals with a win over the Lady Rockets at North Allegheny.
Union plays the winner of Monday’s Frazier-West Greene game in the semifinals on Wednesday at Montour.
Brooklynne Snyder had a single and RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (7-9).
Bella Cameron led Union (19-1) with a single, home run and two RBI.
