Leopards advance to WPIAL Class AAA golf final
The Belle Vernon boys made program history Tuesday by qualifying for the WPIAL Class AAA Team Golf Championship final round and posting the best team score.
The Leopards and West Allegheny tied for first place with a team total of 397 at Indian Run Golf Course. South Fayette earned the third and final berth with 382.
The top five scores (of six golfers) for 18 holes were counted in the final score.
The three teams advance to the WPIAL Team Championship on Thursday at Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Gold course with a 10 a.m. tee time.
Belle Vernon is the defending Class AA champion, but was moved back into Class AAA this season.
The Leopards’ Seth Tomalski was medalist with a 2-under 69. Jordan Mocello finished with an even-par 71. Jack Edwards (83), Donnie Croftcheck (75), and Landon Vaccaro (81) closed out the scoring. Trevor Kovatch’s 88 was not used.
Peters Township (385), Seneca Valley (392), Canon-McMillan (403), and Shaler (405) also competed in the semifinal.
Fox Chapel finished first in the Class AAA semifinal at Champion Lakes Golf Course with a team total of 380. North Allegheny finished second with 390 and Plum grabbed the third and final berth with 403.
Connellsville finished with a team score of 455.
Ethan Porreca was the low man with 82. Eli Armstrong shot 87. Matt Firestone (97), Hunter Konieczny (91), and Derek Routzahn (98) closed out the scoring. Christian Burd’s 106 did not count.
Quaker Valley finished first in the Class AA semifinal held at Pleasant Valley Golf Club with 398. Shady Side Academy (405) and Greensburg Central Catholic (407) also advanced to Thursday’s Class AA championship at Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Gold Course.
Mount Pleasant finished sixth with a team score of 435.
Aydan Gross was the low man for the Vikings with a 5-over 76. Ryan Karfelt shot 81. Nico Pisula (89), Austyn Gross (98), and Darren Kinneer (91) rounded out the scoring.
Waynesburg Central finished 10th with a score of 511.
Chase Phillips (93), Aidan Titus (111), Joe Kirsch (98), Jarett Tretinik (101), and Rykan Gustafson (108) had scoring rounds for the Raiders.
