Leopards’ Kovatch nets 100th goal in 2-1 home victory
Brandon Yeschenko set up Trevor Kovatch with not only the game-winning goal in Belle Vernon’s 2-1 win Tuesday night in a Section 3-AAA match against West Mifflin, but also the senior’s 100th career goal.
Kovatch becomes the first boy to score 100 goals, surpassing Daniel Sassak’s career total of 99 goals.
The Leopards’ Anthony Sawa converted Chris Showman’s pass into a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Waynesburg Central 1, Mount Pleasant 0 – Dominic George scored on a penalty kick with about seven minutes remaining for a tight Section 4-AA victory over visiting Mount Pleasant.
The Raiders’ Dalton Taylor preserved the victory with a shutout.
Bentworth 3, Beth-Center 0 – Ryan Moessner scored two goals and assisted on Adam Moessner’s goal for a Section 2-A road victory.
Andrew Vipperman and Aiden McMurray assisted on Ryan Moessner’s goals. Goalie DJ Hays preserved the shutout.
Bentworth improves to 8-0 in the section and 14-0 overall.
“Feels good making it through section play giving up one goal. Our defense has been solid all year. The guys I have back there in front of DJ work hard non-stop,” said Bentworth coach Nicholas Malarbi.
Allderdice 12, Uniontown 0 – Allderdice shut out the Red Raiders for a non-section win.
Uniontown goes to 2-11 overall, while Allderdice improves to 9-3-1.
Canon-McMillan 11, Connellsville 0 – The Big Macs’ Logan Joseph posted the shutout in the Section 2-AAAA win.
Adam Kuchera scored a hat trick for Canon-McMillan (5-4-0, 9-4-1). The Falcons slip to 0-9 in the section and 2-12 overall.
Charleroi 9, Yough 3 – Blake Pendo finished with a hat trick in the Cougars’ Section 4-AA win.
The Cougars remained undefeated, improving to 12-0 in the section and 13-0 overall. Yough goes to 4-6-2 in the section and 4-9-2 overall.
Elizabeth Forward 6, Steel Valley 0 – Six different players scored a goal in the Warriors’ Section 3-AA victory.
Elizabeth Forward improves to 10-1-1 in the section and 11-3-1 overall.
Greensburg C.C. 11, California 2 – The Trojans dropped a Section 2-A match to the Centurions.
Grant Brewer scored three goals and assisted on four more for Greensburg C.C. (4-3-0, 4-7-1). California slips to 1-6 in the section and 1-7 overall.
Southmoreland 6, Brownsville 0 – Landon Delara and Ethan Kenney both scored two goals to lead the Scotties to a Section 4-AA road victory
Southmoreland (8-4, 10-6) clinched a playoff berth with the win. Brownsville goes to 2-9-1 in the section and 2-11-1 overall.
Thomas Jefferson 2, Ringgold 1 – Zach Whaley scored for the Rams in a Section 2-AAA loss to the Jaguars.
Ringgold goes to 7-4-1 in the section and 8-6-1 overall.
Girls volleyball
Laurel Highlands Albert Gallatin 2 – The Lady Colonials rallied to force a fifth set in the Section 3-AAA match, but visiting Laurel Highlands won the fifth set, 15-11, for the road victory.
Laurel Highlands opened a 2-0 lead with set wins of 26-24 and 25-18. Albert Gallatin tied the match with set wins of 25-20 and 26-24.
Sara Reed set up Laurel Highlands’ offensive attack with 26 assists. She also had six digs and five aces. Ayrianna Sumpter (8 kills, 5 digs), Alexandra Mattey (8 digs, 6 kills), Diondre Brown (3 digs, 4 kills, 2 blocks), Callie Friend (6 kills, 6 blocks), Lucy Baker (5 digs), Jayna Fabrey (11 digs), Harlie Didra (5 digs), and Yelena Ford (3 digs, 5 kills) all had solid performances in the victory.
Leah Myers had a team-high 15 kills and six blocks for Albert Gallatin. Mya Glisan finished with 11 kills. Mia Myers led with 24 assists. Lily Mack had a solid defensive effort with eight digs. Kymber Hlatky Houze finished with four kills.
Ringgold 3, Uniontown 0 – The Lady Rams swept past visiting Uniontown for a Section 3-AAA victory.
Ringgold swept to victory by the scores, 25-15, 25-6, 25-7.
Waynesburg Central 3, Burgettstown 1 – The Lady Raiders remained undefeated with a Section 3-AA road win.
Waynesburg improves to 11-0 in the section and 13-0 overall.
The Lady Raiders’ Railey Bochna had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Bailey Rafferty finished with 22 assists and nine kills. Ani Cree had team-highs of 13 kills and two blocks. Emily Rafferty contributed 10 digs and eight kills.
Brownsville 3, Bentworth 1 – The Lady Bearcats tied the Section 3-AA match by winning the second set, 25-22, but Brownsville won the final two sets for the home win.
The Lady Falcons (5-5, 7-9) had set wins of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-17.
Bentworth’s Chelsea Dindal finished with 22 digs. Zoie McDonald had 13 assists and three aces.
Carmichaels 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Mikes rolled to a Section 3-A victory over visiting Mapletown.
Carmichaels swept to victory by the scores, 25-14, 25-23, 25-19.
Miranda Fox (6 kills, 2 aces, 10 digs, 2 blocks), Treslee Weston (4 kills, 1 ace, 8 digs), Marley Seward (3 kills, 10 digs), and Marley Shiflett (2 kills, 1 ace, 14 assists) were stats leaders for Mapletown (1-6, 2-9).
Girls tennis
Indiana 3, Mount Pleasant 2 – The Lady Vikings fell at home in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA team playoffs.
Ryleigh Drzal won her singles match, and Danica Trainer and Kiersten O’Connor were victorious in their doubles match.
Boys golf
WPIAL Class AA team semifinals – North Catholic, Elizabeth Forward and McGuffey advanced from The Links at Spring Church through to the WPIAL Championship on Thursday at Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Gold course.
North Catholic topped the field with a team score of 390. Elizabeth Forward placed second with 390 and McGuffey was the third qualifier with 410.
