Lady Commodores advance to volleyball semifinals
The Frazier girls volleyball team swept past visiting Serra Catholic Thursday night to secure a spot in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals.
The Lady Commodores (14-3) won by the scores, 25-23, 25-13, 25-11.
Gracen Hartman led Frazier with 43 assists. Addison Schultz finished with 12 kills and five blocks. Maddie Salisbury had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 service points. Grace Vaughn contributed nine kills and 14 service points. Addison Hiles had a team-high 18 digs. Grace Polkabla finished with nine kills. Mia West had four blocks.
St. Joseph 3, California 0 – St. Joseph swept past the Lady Trojans for a WPIAL Class A quarterfinal victory.
St. Joseph won by the scores, 25-15, 25-22, 25-19.
Hockey
Ringgold 7, Gateway 3 – The Rams scored three goals in both the first and second periods for a PIHL D2 Division home victory.
Brady Lippert scored the last two goals in the first period and Nolan Mosco netted the opening goal of the game.
Ringgold (2-1-0-0) extended its lead to 6-0 in the second period on goals from Matt Sylvester, Caden Doran and Mosco. Lippert scored the Rams’ goal in the third period.
Gavin Grant scored twice and Tommy Tuskan IV once for the Gators (0-2-0-0) in the final period.
Gateway outshot Ringgold, 36-25.
The Rams’ Braidee Blackburn stopped 33 shots. Gateway’s Dakota Montedoro made 18 saves.
Elizabeth Forward 4, Connellsville 3 – The Warriors’ Cam Thompson scored the game-winning goal at 6:27 of the third period for a PIHL D2 home win.
Brant Alekson scored at 2:55 of the third period for Elizabeth Forward.
Evan Sokol cut the Falcons’ deficit to one goal with seven minutes remaining in the game.
Sam Denny spotted Connellsville (2-1-0-0) the lead with his goal at 12:15 of the first period.
Elizabeth Forward (3-1-1-0) tied the game 93 seconds into the second period on Riley Wright’s power play goal.
The lead returned to Connellsville two minutes later on Denny’s short-handed goal.
Thompson’s power play goal at 11:32 returned the lead to Elizabeth Forward.
Connellsville held a 31-26 advantage in shots on goal. The Falcons were held scoreless on five man advantage opportunities, while Elizabeth Forward converted 2-of-6 chances.
Elizabeth Forward’s Andrew Weir turned aside 28 shots. Connellsville’s Nick Daniels-Nimmick stopped 22 shots.
