Lady Scots win FCCA Volleyball Invitational title
HILLER – The Southmoreland girls ran the table Saturday to win the FCCA Volleyball Invitational held at Brownsville.
The Lady Scots didn’t drop a set throughout pool play, the semifinals or the championship match.
Southmoreland defeated Laurel Highlands in the title match, 2-0, by the scores 25-21 and 25-17.
The Lady Scots also won two sets from Laurel Highlands in pool play, but the scores were close (25-19, 25-22).
The championship featured several long rallies with both teams scrambling on defense to keep the ball alive.
“I think thatĢƵ the one thing they do very well,” Southmoreland first-year coach MIchelle Pergar said of her squad keeping the play alive. “They play a lot of other sports together, so they know each other.
“They know how to communicate with each other. I’d like for them to communicate more, but I know they have each otherĢƵ back.”
Pergar also appreciates the versatility her squad brings.
“All these girls are expected to play back row and front row. I think that helps us,” said Pergar.
Laurel Highlands coach Michaela Hall also acknowledged her squadĢƵ ability to keep the ball alive for long rallies.
“I like scrappy, but scrappy is more messy,” said Hall. “My girls played fine. We lacked movement on defense today.
“We wanted to clean up (the lineup) and figure out what our starting lineup was.”
Both coaches feel their respective squads had a productive day of volleyball.
“These girls were going to see a lot of good competition. They’re not in our section, but I know quality and I knew we were going to have quality teams here to play,” said Pergar.
Laurel Highlands will play two of the teams this week, Connellsville and Carmichaels.
Pergar likes the dynamic of her squad as they attempt to build on last yearĢƵ solid season.
“These girls are a tough team. They’re able to be pushed, which is a breath of fresh air, and I think they’re going to do fantastic in the section,” said Pergar, adding, “They’re a fun group of girls.”
Hall saw value in the long day of volleyball in preparation for the section schedule as Laurel Highlands looks for another playoff berth.
“I think we’re going to have a good season. They’re strong players,” said Hall. “(The tournament) was really good, especially playing Southmoreland. We’re always telling the girls about facing adversity.
“ThatĢƵ what helps us with those teams like Thomas Jefferson, the higher level teams.”
Southmoreland and Laurel Highlands had byes in the championship round.
Belle Vernon defeated Carmichaels, 25-21, and Albert Gallatin fended off Connellsville, 25-17, in the first round of the Gold Bracket. Southmoreland downed Belle Vernon, 25-22, and Laurel Highlands defeated Albert Gallatin, 25-23, to advance to the title game.
