Local trio advances through girls golf sectional
Three girls advanced through the Section 1-AA qualifier Tuesday afternoon for a berth into next Monday’s WPIAL Class AA Individual golf semifinals at Willowbrook Country Club.
Southmoreland’s Kendall Campbell and Waynesburg Central’s Avery Davis both shot 92 at Norvelt Golf Club, while Mount Pleasant’s Morgan Miller advanced with a 93. The target score was 94.
Elizabeth Forward’s Mya Morgan was the medalist in the Section 3-AAA qualifier at Victory Hills Golf Course with an even-par 71. Teammate Sydney Boyd also advanced after shooting 82. The target score was 89.
Boys golf
Laurel Highlands 194, McKeesport 211 – The Mustangs closed the season with their best team score of the year in a Section 2-AAA road win at Butler’s Golf Course’s Woodside.
Jacob Kalich was the low man for Laurel Highlands (6-6, 6-7) with 37. Tyler Cook shot 38, and Sevi Vecchiolla and Kayden Smith both finished with 39. Nico Harim closed out the scoring with 41. Ryan Revak’s 47 did not count.
Brock Stephenson and Aiden Lipchey both shot 39 for the Tigers (1-11, 5-11).
Jefferson-Morgan 230, Carmichaels 237 – The Rockets were tough at home on Greene County Country Club for a Section 3-AA win.
Urijah Teasdale had medalist honors for Jefferson-Morgan (7-5, 8-5) with even-par 36. Brayden Ellsworth (44), Clay Wilson (48), Brendan Wood (49), and Dayten Marion (51) closed out the scoring.
Connor Lapana was the low golfer for the Mikes (7-4, 7-5) with 44. Jase Zdravecky (45), Nathan Dursa (48), Eli Hastings (49), and Zach Murphy (51) also counted in the final score.
Frazier 193, Yough 221 – The Commodores ended the season on a winning note with a Section 8-AA road victory at Madison Club.
Frazier’s Dylan Keilbach was medalist with 33. Aidan Hardy (35) and Travis Smith (39) also broke 40. Eli Cernuska shot 40 and Tyler Monack closed the scoring with 46.
Landon O’Donnell was the low man for Yough with 39.
Girls tennis
Connellsville 4, Greensburg Salem 1 – The Lady Falcons swept the singles matches for a non-section victory at Greensburg Racquet Club.
Maggie Orndorff, Josie Knopsnider and Aubree McClean all won their singles matches. Katelyn Adams and Kenzie Schroyer won their match at No. 1 doubles.
Boys cross country
Ringgold 15, West Mifflin 50; Ringgold 22, McKeesport 34; Laurel Highlands 15, West Mifflin 50; Laurel Highlands 25, McKeesport 33 – The Mustangs’ Matt Schwertfeger led the way on his home course in a Section 2-AAA meet against the Titans and Tigers.
Schwertfeger finished first with a time of 17:40. Ringgold’s AJ Bruce (17:58), Daniel Peterson (17:59), and Ethan Rohr (18:40) followed across the finish line.
Laurel Highlands’ Drake Shaffer was sixth in 19:04 and Ryan Filcheck finished 10th in 20:20. Ringgold’s Stephen Redmond placed ninth in 20:16.
Thomas Jefferson 20, Connellsville 43, Connellsville 24, Elizabeth Forward 33; Uniontown 28, Thomas Jefferson 29; Uniontown 15, Elizabeth Forward 50; Thomas Jefferson 15, Albert Gallatin 50; Elizabeth Forward 15, Albert Gallatin 50 – The Red Raiders remained undefeated in Section 2-AAA with a close win over Thomas Jefferson and a shutout of Elizabeth Forward at Connellsville.
The Falcons’ Jonah Lindstrom nipped Uniontown’s Cooper Gilleland for first place. Lindstrom’s time was 17:06.19, while Gilleland crossed the finish line in 17:06.88.
The Red Raiders’ Ethan Syner was close behind in third place with a time of 17:15. Teammate Chase King was seventh in 18:36 and Logan Davis was eighth with a time of 18:38.
Albert Gallatin’s Brock Mace finished 11th with a time of 18:51.
Belle Vernon 15, Serra Catholic 50 – The Leopards cruised to a Section 5-AA win over the Eagles.
Girls cross country
Ringgold 15, West Mifflin 50; Ringgold 15, McKeesport 50; Laurel Highlands 15, McKeesport 50; Laurel Highlands 15, West Mifflin 50 – The Lady Rams remained undefeated in Section 2-AAA action with a pair of wins at Laurel Highlands.
Ringgold’s Lily Brenneman finished first in a time of 21 minutes.
Laurel Highlands’ Bella Baker was second with a time of 21:23 and teammate Taylor Schwertfeger was third in 22:20.
Ringgold’s Emma Bartkus (22:57), Sara Palmer (23:43), and Willow Leach (24:49) followed across the finish line. Laurel Highlands’ Maura Naugle placed seventh in 24:56.
Connellsville 28, Thomas Jefferson 29; Connellsville 27, Elizabeth Forward 30; Uniontown 19, Thomas Jefferson 41; Uniontown 17, Elizabeth Forward 46; Elizabeth Forward 15, Albert Gallatin 50; Thomas Jefferson 15, Albert Gallatin 50 – The Lady Falcons and Lady Raiders swept the Section 2-AAA meet held at Connellsville.
Uniontown’s Grace Trimmer ran for the first time this season to a first-place finish in 19:40.
Connellsville’s Abigail Zavatchan was third in 21:56.
The Lady Raiders’ Addy Martin placed fourth in 21:58 with teammate Paisley Murtha crossing the finish line three seconds later. Arrington Scott (7, 22:26), Kiley Abbott (8, 22:32), Emily Young (9, 22:44), and Hannah Foster (10, 22:53) also had top-10 finishes.
Elizabeth Forward’s Lily Ash finished sixth with a time of 22:17.
Belle Vernon 19, Serra Catholic 44 – The Lady Leopards won a Section 5-AA meet against the Lady Eagles.
Girls volleyball
Laurel Highland 3, Uniontown 1 – The visitors tied the Section 3-AAA match after winning the second set, but Laurel Highlands won the next two sets to secure the victory.
Laurel Highlands won the first set, 25-10, and Uniontown tied the match with a 25-21 win in the second set. Laurel Highlands took the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-8, for the victory.
Uniontown was led by (Maggie Campbell 14 assists, 5 blocks, 8 digs), Ava Livingood 10 blocks, 5 kills), Khloe Burnworth (9 digs), Lyric McLee (6 digs, 2 kills), Lexi Humberston (11 digs), Ryleigh Jose (4 kills, 4 digs, 3 blocks), and Layla Fitzgerald (3 blocks).
Albert Gallatin 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 – The Lady Colonials swept past Elizabeth Forward for a Section 3-AAA road win.
Albert Gallatin won by the scores, 25-17, 25-19, 25-11.
Mikayla Shea (4 digs, 2 aces, 2 kills), Leah Myers (3 digs, 3 aces, 10 kills), and Mia Myers (15 assists, 5 aces, 2 kills) led Albert Gallatin’s attack.
Waynesburg Central 3, Brownsville 0 – The Lady Raiders defeated visiting Brownsville for a Section 3-AA win.
Waynesburg (5-0, 6-0) swept to victory with the scores 25-19, 25-17 and 25-19.
Skyler Gates had 13 kills and three blocks for the Lady Falcons (1-4, 1-6). Kenzie Adams finished with 10 assists and six service points, and Ashley Evanchak had 13 digs.
Waynesburg Central (5-0, 6-0) was led by Bailey Rafferty (12 assists, 3 digs, 6 aces), Gina Tedrow (4 assists, 5 aces), Emily Rafferty (7 kills), Ani Cree (4 kills, 3 blocks), and Railey Bochna (6 kills, 3 digs, 4 aces).
McGuffey 3, Bentworth 1 – McGuffey won the last two sets for a Section 3-AA home win.
Bentworth tied the match after winning the second set, 25-23. McGuffey rallied to take the next two sets, 25-15, 25-17.
Chelsea Dindal had four kills, Zoie McDonald finished with four aces and 10 assists, and Oliva Telegraphis had a team-high 18 digs.
West Greene 3, Mapletown 0 – The Lady Pioneers swept to victory for a Section 3-A road win at Mapletown.
West Greene won by the scores, 25-22, 25-11, 25-17.
Treslee Weston (6 kills, 3 aces), Marley Seward (5 kills, 2 aces, 10 digs), Miranda Fox (4 kills, 1 block), Marley Shifflet (8 digs, 9 assists), and Leah Williamson (8 assists) led Mapletown (0-3, 1-4).
Frazier 3, California 0 – The set scores were close, but the Lady Commodores came away with a Section 4-A sweep.
Frazier (3-0, 5-2) won by the scores, 25-21, 25-20, 25-13.
Frazier’s stats leaders were Addison Schultz (9 kills, 27 digs), Grace Vaughn (9 kills), Gracen Hartman (36 assists), and Maddie Salisbury (14 service points).
Boys soccer
Bethel Park 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – Xavier Jackson, Jackson Friday and Ali Jasin all scored one goal in Bethel Park’s Section 2-AAA victory.
Laurel Highlands slips to 1-4-1 in the section and 1-4-2 overall. Bethel Park improves to 5-1 in the section and 5-2 overall.
Canon-McMillan 10, Connellsville 0 – The Big Macs downed visiting Connellsville for a Section 2-AAAA victory.
Adam Kuchera scored four goals and Dante Pasquarelli had a hat trick for Canon-McMillan (1-2-0, 4-2-1). Connellsville slides to 0-4 in the section and 2-7 overall.
Franklin Regional 5, Belle Vernon 0 – The Panthers shut out the Leopards for a Section 3-AAA win.
Belle Vernon goes to 1-4 in the section and 3-4 overall, while Franklin Regional improves to 4-0 in the section and 5-1 overall.
Greensburg C.C. 11, California 0 – Jackson Vacanti scored five goals to lead the Centurions to a Section 2-A win.
Isaac House made four saves to preserve the shutout for Greensburg C.C. (2-1-0, 2-2-1). California falls to 0-3 in the section and 0-4 overall.
Mount Pleasant 3, Southmoreland 2, OT – Jarett Garn scored the deciding goal with 44 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to lift the Vikings to a Section 4-AA win.
Bryson Bankosh and Gavin Rummel also scored a goal for Mount Pleasant (6-0, 7-2). Southmoreland goes to 3-2 in the section and 5-3 overall.
Bentworth 5, Beth-Center 0 – The Bearcats led 4-0 at halftime to cruise to a victory over the visiting Bulldogs.
Adam Moessner and Ryan Moessner both scored two goals for Bentworth. Billy Moyer added one goal.
Penn-Trafford 11, Uniontown 0 – Penn-Trafford blanked the Red Raiders for a Section 3-AAA victory.
JJ Porter and Yuriy Bidochko both scored a hat trick for Penn-Trafford (2-2-1, 3-3-1). Uniontown slips to 0-5 in the section and 1-5 overall.
Ringgold 3, South Fayette 0 – Nick Evans scored two goals in the Rams’ Section 2-AAA win over the Lions.
Ringgold improves to 4-0-1 in the section and 5-1-1 overall.
Charleroi 11, Derry 0 – Dylan Klinger scored a hat trick in the Cougars’ Section 4-AA win.
Charleroi remains undefeated, improving to 6-0 in the section and 7-0 overall.
Elizabeth Forward 5, Ligonier Valley 2 – Aidan Davis and Carson Ruffing scored two goals apiece in the Warriors’ Section 3-AA win.
Ethan Childers also scored a goal for Elizabeth Forward (5-0-1, 6-2-1).
