High school football roundup: Trojans shake off slow start to roll past Avella, 40-0
California coach Ed Woods liked 75 percent of what he saw from his football team on Friday night at Avella.
“I was pleased from the second quarter on by what we did offensively,” Woods said following his team’s 40-0 Tri-County South victory over the Eagles. “I thought we executed pretty well.”
California (2-0, 3-2) held a precarious 6-0 lead after the first quarter but outscored Avella (0-2, 1-4) 28-0 in the second to take control of the game.
The Trojans’ Lee Qualk and Malachi Peak both rushed for over 100 yards.
Qualk carried 14 times for 137 yards and one touchdown and also hauled in one of quarterback Logan Hartley’s three scoring passes. Peak added nine carries for 124 yards and a TD.
Hartley also threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Adin Keyes and 7 yards to Vinny Manzella.
“Lee had a nice night on both sides of the football,” Woods said. “Malachi Peak also ran the ball hard. The second half we ended up putting one of our guards in at quarterback to give him some experience there so we could use him down the road as well.”
Qualk accounted for the only points in the opening quarter with a 7-yard TD run.
“I thought the first quarter, we didn’t play the brand of football that I expected, but in the second quarter we started to get our legs under us,” said Woods, who gave credit to Avella for his team’s slow start.
“I thought Avella was a very well coached football team,” Woods said. “Their kids played hard. I have to give Avella credit. I felt they came out and had a really good game plan against us and they did some nice things on defense.”
Qualk started California’s second-quarter eruption with a 41-yard touchdown run and Landon Abercrombied pulled in a two-point pass from Hartley to make it 14-0.
The other three scores in the quarter came through the air as Hartley tossed TD passes to Keyes, Manzella and then added a 24-yarder to Qualk for a 34-0 halftime advantage.
Peak scored the only points of the second half with a 7-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
“It was a good win for us,” said Woods, who lauded his defense.
“It’s huge any time you can keep a zero on the board against your opponent. It was something we talked about all week. That was definitely one of our goals. I’m glad the kids were able to achieve that.”
