Eden Christian Academy breezes by Lady Gators, 3-0
CONNELLSVILLE TWP. – The Geibel Catholic girls volleyball team entered TuesdayĢƵ non-section match against visiting Eden Christian Academy on the heels of the programĢƵ first victory since 2021.
Eden Christian swept past the home team in three sets, winning by the scores 25-7, 25-7, and 25-6.
Eden Christian Academy (11-1) sits atop the Section 5-A standings with a 4-0 record. Geibel is at the bottom of Section 4-A with a 0-4 section mark and overall record of 1-8.
Geibel managed to stay close early in all three sets until the visitors put a run together for control of the action.
Eden Christian had the advantage at the net and was able to find spots in the Geibel defense for easy points.
“ItĢƵ something we work on every day. ItĢƵ a mixture of a multiple of things,” said Geibel first-year coach Collin Brant. “It could be talking. Sometimes a team just hits short balls and you’re not prepared all the time.”
Brant noted he sees improvement in each practice and game.
“I see progress every single day and in every game. Moving feet and communication is what we preach a lot,” said Brant. “A lot of it is just this is a team thatĢƵ had four head coaches the past four years. ItĢƵ trying to get some consistency sometimes. ItĢƵ not their fault. ItĢƵ just the way the program has been.”
Brant noted what needs to improve as the team progresses through the season.
“Same thing if you talk to other teams, talking, moving their feet, communication. Communication is the biggest thing,” said Brant.
Belle Vernon 3, Uniontown 0 – The Lady Leopards cruised to Section 3-AAA victory over Uniontown.
Belle Vernon won by the scores, 25-18, 25-12, 25-17.
Uniontown stats leaders were Lyric McLee (7 digs, 3 kills, 2 aces), Khloe Burnworth (6 digs), Maggie Campbell (11 assists, 2 aces, 2 kills, 2 digs, 2 blocks), Ava Livingood (4 kills, 6 digs), Lauren White (5 digs, 2 blocks), and Ryleigh Jose (2 kills, 2 digs, 2 aces).
Ringgold 3, Laurel Highlands 0 – Ringgold was tough at home for a Section 3-AAA win in three sets.
Ringgold rolled to victory by the scores 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17.
Sara Reed had a double-double for Laurel Highlands with 16 assists and 11 digs. Ayrianna Sumpter (2 digs, 8 kills), Alexandra Mattey (4 digs, 7 kills), Diondra Brown (2 digs, 5 kills, 5 blocks), Callie Friend (2 kills, 2 blocks), Lucy Baker (4 digs, 2 kills), Jayna Fabrey (4 digs, 2 assists), Yelena Ford (3 assists), and Harlie Didra (2 digs) also contributed for Laurel Highlands.
Brownsville 3, Chartiers-Houston 0 – The Lady Falcons returned home with a Section 3-AA win in straight sets.
Brownsville (3-4, 4-6) swept to victory by the scores, 25-14, 25-18, 25-20.
The Lady Falcons’ Payton Evanchak had a double-double with 11 assists and 10 service points. Sklyer Gates was tough at the net with 16 kills. Ashley Evanchak contributed 22 digs and eight service points. Abigayle Thomas finished with 13 service points and three aces.
Waynesburg Central 3, McGuffey 0 – The Lady Raiders remained undefeated with a Section 3-AA home victory.
Waynesburg (7-0, 8-0) rolled to victory with the scores 25-15, 25-19 and 25-19.
Waynesburg CentralĢƵ stats leaders were Ani Cree (11 kills, 5 digs, 2 blocks), Railey Bochna (10 kills, 9 digs, 1 block, 3 aces), Emily Rafferty (6 kills, 2 aces), Leila McCollum (7 digs), Bailey Rafferty (22 assists, 2 aces), and Gina Tedrow (8 assists).
Mapletown 3, Avella 0 – The Lady Maples secured their first Section 3-A win with a straight-sets victory over the visiting Lady Eagles.
Mapletown (1-4, 2-6) won by the scores, 25-9, 25-14, 25-21.
Marley Shiflett (12 assists, 2 aces, 7 digs), Treslee Weston (9 kills), Miranda Fox (8 kills, 3 aces, 5 digs), and Marley Seward (11 aces, 7 digs) led the way for Mapletown.
Boys golf
Carmichaels 234, Fort Cherry 247 – The Mikes ended the season on a winning note with a non-section road victory at Quicksilver Golf Club.
Connor Lapana secured medalist honors for Carmichaels (8-6) with 3-over 39. Nathan Dursa (48), Zach Murphy (49), Aydan Bate (48), and Eli Hastings (50) also counted in the final score.
Ben Demascal was the low man for the Rangers (2-15) with 42.
Boys soccer
Charleroi 8, Southmoreland 2 – Dylan Klinger scored a hat trick to lead the Cougars to a Section 4-AA win.
Charleroi remains undefeated, improving to 8-0 in the section and 9-0 overall. Southmoreland goes to 5-3 in the section and 7-4 overall.
Elizabeth Forward 9, South Allegheny 2 – Aidan Davis scored a hat trick in the Warriors’ Section 3-AA win.
Dominic Cavalier finished with a goal and three assists for Elizabeth Forward (7-0-1, 8-2-1).
Laurel Highlands 3, Thomas Jefferson 2, OT – Cole Radcliffe scored the deciding goal in overtime for a victory in a Section 2-AAA match that was suspended on Aug. 27.
Thomas Jefferson 5, Laurel Highlands 0 – Brayden Miller scored four goals in the Jaguars’ Section 2-AAA win.
Owen Householder scored once for Thomas Jefferson (5-1-2, 6-1-2). Laurel Highlands is 3-5-0 in the section and 4-5-1 overall.
Mount Pleasant 5, Brownsville 1 – Aidan Johnson and Tyke Snyder both scored two goals in the Vikings’ Section 4-AA win.
Tyler Kurtz also scored a goal for Mount Pleasant (8-1, 9-4). Brownsville slips to 2-5-1 in the section and 2-6-1 overall.
Ringgold 4, Albert Gallatin 0 – Nick Evans scored a natural hat trick in the first half in the Rams’ Section 2-AAA home victory.
Josh Molisee assisted on two of the first-half goals. Lucas Wukovich scored the lone goal in the second half for Ringgold (5-1-1, 6-3-1).
Belle Vernon 7, Uniontown 1 – The Leopards put the Section 3-AAA match away with five goals in the second half.
Trevor Kovatch scored three goals in the second half and one in the first half for Belle Vernon (2-5, 5-5). Brandon Yeschenko had one goal in each half and Jesse Sobzczak scored one goal in the second half. Bryce Burkhart made four saves in the win.
Uniontown slips to 0-7 in the section and 2-7 overall.
Waynesburg Central 2, Derry 1, 2OT – Brendan Cole scored both goals, including the game-winner with 1:44 left in double overtime, in the Raiders’ Section 4-AA win.
Gabe Snyder and Blake Tennant assisted on ColeĢƵ goals.
Girls soccer
Bentworth 16, Carrick 0 – Megan Keturakis netted a hat trick and Bella Moyer scored twice in the Lady Bearcats’ non-section win.
Brielle Dillon, Madelyn Johns, Jesse Laskey, Brina Orsatti, Lauren Jurovcik, Adrianna Weiss, Camille Sneith, Brooke Leonetti, Emme Orsatti, Brynne Dillon and Jada Partee each scored a goal in the win. Nita Anderson and Julia Brandau combined for the shutout.
Boys cross country
Greensburg C.C. 22, California 39 – The Trojans’ Carter Kent edge the Centurions’ Luke Czegan for first place in a Section 5-AA meet at Greensburg Central Catholic.
KentĢƵ winning time was 18:21, one second in front of Czegan.
CaliforniaĢƵ Charlie Meiss placed fifth with a time of 20:21. Tristan Slavic was 10th in 22:27.
Girls cross country
Greensburg C.C. 15, California 50 – The Lady Centurions’ Ainsleigh Stickle won the Section 5-AA meet on her home course in 22:38.
The Lady Trojans’ Lucia Meiss was second with a time of 23:38. Ally Grodz finished with a time of 36:31.
