Lady Raiders’ Trimmer ‘runs away’ with Everhart Invite title
LEMONT FURNACE – UniontownĢƵ Grace Trimmer continued her successful return after missing a large portion of the season while in concussion protocol with a convincing first-place finish Saturday in the A.J. Everhart Invitational.
The seniorĢƵ winning time was 20:00.6, over a minute faster than Albert GallatinĢƵ Mia Medved. The invitational title marks the first in TrimmerĢƵ career.
“I knew there weren’t too many difficult schools here today like last year. Morgantown and University were here last year. That was more of a challenge,” explained Trimmer, adding, “I knew I had a good shot at winning, so I just went out and did it.”
SouthmorelandĢƵ Lexi Ohler was in contention early.
“I didn’t realize Lexi was here and at the first mile I looked and she was right there. I’m like, ‘Oh, okay,'” said Trimmer. “I had separation around the first mile.”
Trimmer said sheĢƵ still rounding into race shape.
“I felt good for the first two miles. The last mile I was pretty lactic. I had a big enough gap. I wasn’t worried about it,” said Trimmer. “I think I still have some work to do, but I think I’m definitely getting back.”
The last race Medved ran, she didn’t finish. The senior was in contention in the first half of the Section 2-AAA finale on Wednesday at Mingo Creek Park, but didn’t make the return loop to the finish.
Medved was in a much better frame of mind Saturday for a second-place finish in 21:12.10.
“I just wanted to go out there and run. And, after I started, I felt better and started passing people,” said Medved. “Around the two-mile mark, I moved into second and stayed there. I was not too far behind. (Trimmer) was in my sights.
“I had a PR. When I ran here as a sophomore, I didn’t even place in the top 20, so this is a lot better for me.”
Ohler slipped into third place with a time of 21:25.10 for her best finish in the invitational. The senior felt she didn’t run her best race.
“I don’t think I went out fast enough. After the first mile, (Trimmer) got too far ahead of me,” said Ohler. “The start, and not picking up enough on the downhills to make up for the uphills. I was just trying to hold onto second place.
“It was not my best day. I would’ve liked to be under 21 (minutes). I feel I’m dealing with something (physically) I just can’t shake. I really don’t know what it is.”
Laurel Highlands teammates Isabella Baker and Taylor Schwertfeger battled for fourth place with Baker taking the spot with a time of 21:41, about seven seconds before her teammate.
“I knew Grace was going to go, so I just let her go. I went with Lexi,” said Baker. “I got separation from Taylor on the first hill.
“I think I went out a little faster than I wanted to. The second mile was a little bit slower. The last mile just didn’t feel good. I raced a lot this week.”
Baker added, “I would’ve liked for my time to have been a little faster.”
Canon-McMillanĢƵ Anna Jaworski was sixth in 21:54.30 and GatwayĢƵ Piper Munyon placed seventh in 22:01.20.
Connellsville freshman Abby Zavatchan held off UniontownĢƵ Arrington Scott for eighth place. Zavatchan crossed the finish line in 22:17.20, a couple seconds ahead of Scott.
“(Her place) fluctuated a few times, but I was pretty much in eighth,” said Zavatchan. “I dropped over a minute (from her time on the course earlier in the season).”
The Lady Raiders’ Hannah Foster was 10th with a time of 22:42.70. Teammates Paisley Murtha (14, 22:58.10) and Charley Murtha (17, 23:07.40) also placed in the top 20 to help Uniontown win the team title with 37 points.
California senior Lucia Meiss just missed the awards podium in 21st place with a time of 23:29.50. Geibel Catholic junior Emma Larkin placed 24th in 23:40.30. Mount Pleasant junior Kaylea Voke was 26th with a time of 24:03.60.
Eryka Hackney was West GreeneĢƵ top finisher in 31st place with a time of 26:01.30. Carmichaels’ Kaitlyn Kramer was 38th in 27:39.80. BrownsvilleĢƵ Payten Evancheck placed 49th with a time of 29:05.40.
ConnellsvilleĢƵ Addison Lane won the junior high race in 9:29.70. Canon-McMIllanĢƵ Abigail Petruzzi won the JV race with time of 23:48.
