Local roundup: Tedrow hits, pitches Waynesburg to victory
Gina Tedrow was a triple shy of the cycle and struck out 13 in Waynesburg Central’s 7-3 victory on Monday in non-section action at Jefferson-Morgan.
Tedrow was 3 for 3 with a single, double and home run. She hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and walked with the bases loaded in the first to force in a run.
She earned the win in the pitching circle after allowing three earned runs on three hits over seven innings. Tedrow walked 10.
Teammate Bre Kerr also hit a two-run blast in the fourth. She doubled and scored in the first.
Ashlynn Snyder singled and drove in two runs for the Lady Rockets (2-1). Teammate Emilee Bazzoli had a base hit and RBI. She started in the circle, and had seven strikeouts and four walks.
The Lady Raiders improved to 3-3 this season.
West Mifflin 2, Belle Vernon 0 — Riley Dobnak out dueled Maddie Grisnik in the Lady Titans’ Section 2-4A victory at West Mifflin.
West Mifflin (1-0, 3-3) scored both runs in the fourth inning on Mia Bey’s RBI double and Bella Simak’s run-scoring single.
Dobnak doubled and singled, and teammate Bri Dobnak also had two hits, including a double. Kayleigh Tatters doubled for the home team.
Riley Dobnak pitched a five-hitter over seven innings. She had 15 strikeouts and walked five.
Grisnik allowed two runs on eight hits over six frames. She struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.
Mailey Hayes doubled and singled for Belle Vernon (0-1, 2-5).
Elizabeth Forward 15, Uniontown 3 — The Lady Red Raiders matched the Lady Warriors’ three-spot in the first inning, but it was too much offense from Elizabeth Forward for the home team to overcome in a Section 2-4A setback at Bailey Park.
Julia Resnik led off the game with a home run to left field, which was one of 15 hits for the Lady Warriors (1-0, 3-1). EF scored as a result of a Uniontown error and Alivia Grimm added an RBI single to center field for a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Red Raiders (0-1, 2-3) responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. Starting pitcher Emmaleigh Noah doubled to left field with one out and scored when Graci Rodeheaver singled to left. Rodeheaver came all the way around to score Uniontown’s second run when Elizabeth Forward made an error.
Lauren White hit a solo home run to left to tie the game at 3-3.
The Lady Warriors came right back with two runs in the second and third innings for a 7-3 advantage. They added one in the fourth, two in the fifth and sixth innings, and three in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Resnik doubled and Grimm hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
Julia Johnson earned the pitching victory. She allowed three runs on sixth hits over six innings. She had five strikeouts and walked two.
Trinity 11, Albert Gallatin 1 — The Lady Hillers scored four runs apiece in the first and second innings and three in the third to cruise to a Section 4-5A triumph at Trinity Middle School.
Trinity’s Kaylee Danneker hit a three-run home run to left field on a 1-1 pitch in the second inning to increase the Lady Hillers’ lead to 8-0. She also had a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Ally Krenzelak tripled and Gabby Humphreys doubled for Trinity (1-0, 3-3).
Maddie Ray and Danneker combined for a five-inning, no-hitter. Ray had three strikeouts and no walks in three innings for the win. Danneker had four strikeouts and no walks in two innings.
The Lady Colonials (0-1, 2-2) scored in the fourth when Maddy Quertinmont, Ellie Seese and Hannah Dunham reached on three straight errors. Quertinmont scored when a fly ball hit by Dunham was misplayed.
Jenna Myers started for Albert Gallatin, and struck out one and walked two.
Baseball
Connellsville 5, Montour 3 — Ethan Porreca and Matthew Firestone combined to allow one earned run in the Falcons’ victory over the Spartans to open Section 4-5A action at Burkett Park in McKees Rocks.
Porreca earned the win after yielding two runs (none earned) on two hits over four innings. He struck out and walked six. Firestone recorded the save after allowing one earned run on three hits in three innings. He struck out three and walked two.
Montour (0-1, 1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in scoring an unearned run. Spartans starting pitcher Matteo Weber reached on an error and courtesy runner Nino DiMichele scored on Andrew Porto’s sacrifice fly to right field.
The Falcons (1-0, 5-1) responded with a run in the second when Gradin Hodge singled to lead off the frame, and with one out, Chase Sankovich lined a base hit to right field to put runners at first and second. Porreca singled to third to load the bases and Hodge scored on Jayden Mickens’ base hit for a 1-1 game.
Connellsville took control in the fourth when it scored three runs on four hits for a 4-1 advantage.
Sankovich walked with one out, advanced to third on Porreca’s single and stole home for a 2-1 lead. Sankovich had two steals.
Mickens singled and Jonathan Kelly reached on a bunt base hit before Mickens and courtesy runner Mason Miller scored on Grayden Gillott’s line drive to right field.
The Spartans cut the deficit to 4-2 when they scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth.
The Falcons pushed their lead back to three in the sixth when Brett Bartholow reached on an error and scored on Firestone’s base hit to left field.
Porto hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh, but Firestone was able to work around an error and record the last three outs.
Mount Pleasant 11, Deer Lakes 1 — Jacob Kitz yielded one run in six innings to help lead the Vikings to a Section 3-3A victory at Deer Lakes.
Kitz’s lone blemish came in the fifth inning, as the Lancers’ James Gall led off the frame with a home run to center field. Mount Pleasant (3-0, 4-2) had a 10-0 lead at the time of Gall’s blast.
The Vikings got the run back in the top of the sixth, and Kitz induced a flyout to left field and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game in six innings due to the 10-run rule. Kitz allowed five hits while striking out six and walking one. He doubled and knocked in a run via sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Dane Firmstone was 3 for 5 with a double. He scored two runs and had an RBI. Connor Drzal had two hits and two RBIs. Carter Strayer had two hits.
Noah Shurina doubled for Deer Lakes (2-1, 2-3).
