Local roundup: Mikes outlast Rockets in 10 innings, 4-3

Robbie Wilson-Jones stroked a walk-off, two-run single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Carmichaels a dramatic 4-3 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan in a Section 1-A baseball battle Wednesday.

The Rockets had taken a 3-2 lead with a run in the top of the 10th.

Ryder Krieg had two hits, three stolen bases and an RBI for the Mikes (3-0, 4-1) and Colin Andrews contributed a single, RBI and stolen base. Wilson-Jones and Parker Hewitt each stole two bases.

Winning pitcher Scottie Maskil came on to record a strikeout to end the 10th inning after Wilson-Jones had surrendered the go-ahead run to J-M. Andrews started on the mound for Carmichaels and allowed two runs on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 7 â…“ innings.

Jefferson-Morgan starting pitcher Drew Adams gave up two runs on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in eight innings. After John Woodward tossed a scoreless ninth, Brayden Ellsworth allowed two unearned runs in the bottom of the 10th, including Wilson-Jones’ game-winning hit.

The only scoring before the 10th inning came when the Mikes put up two runs in the fifth and the Rockets plated two in the sixth.

Deakyn Dehoet had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for J-M (0-3, 1-3) which also got a double and a single from Woodward and two singles from Joe Bair.

Belle Vernon 5, Ringgold 2 – Parker Lind allowed three hits and no earned runs with 11 strikeouts and no walks in 5 â…“ innings to earn the win as the Leopards remained unbeaten by defeating the visiting Rams in a Section 2-4A game.

Connor Bergman’s two-run double in the third inning broke a scoreless tie and put Belle Vernon (3-0, 5-0) ahead to stay. The Leopards also got a single and two RBIs from Kole Doppelheuer and a single, RBI and stolen base from Chace Petrosky.

Cole Matusik allowed one run in recording the final five outs.

Sam Allen had two hits and an RBI and Gavin Angotti doubled and singled for Ringgold (1-2, 2-4) which also got a double and an RBI from Kenndy Nash.

Anthony Koziel took the loss.

Elizabeth Forward 5, Laurel Highlands 4 – Charlie Nigut had three hits and two stolen bases and Cy Herchelroath pitched five strong innings as the host Warriors triumphed over the Mustangs in a Section 2-4A game.

Herchelroath allowed one run on three hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts to earn the win. AJ Grese had a double, single and an RBI and Jacob Peterson added a hit and two RBIs for Elizabeth Forward (2-1, 5-1).

Sevi Vecchiolla led Laurel Highlands (0-1, 1-2) with a home run, double and two RBIs. Noah Lion and Parker Hoff each doubled for LH. Nick Fleszar was the losing pitcher.

Brownsville 7, Washington 3 – Hunter Pelehac singled, doubled and tripled in the Falcons’ Section 4-3A win over the Prexies (0-3, 1-6).

Jeremiah McDonald had two RBIs for Brownsville (1-2, 1-2).

California 3, Burgettstown 1 – Caden Monticelli took a shutout into the sixth inning to earn the win in the Trojans’ Section 1-2A victory over the Blue Devils (2-1, 3-1).

Monticelli surrendered two hits and three walks while striking out six in 5 â…” innings and also drove in a run. Ricky Lawson allowed one run while recording the final four outs to earn the save and added two hits and an RBI with the bat.

California (1-0, 1-3) also got two hits from Weston Monticelli and a hit and an RBI from Chase Cicchitto.

Connellsville 3, Montour 2 – Grayden Gillott one-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Falcons (2-0, 6-1) to a Section 4-5A win over visiting Montour (0-2, 1-4), which had scored twice in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.

Gillott had two hits and two RBIs. Matthew Firestone drove in Connellsville’s other run.

Jeff Dunaway pitched 1 â…“ scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Falcons starting pitcher Mason Miller gave up two runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 6 â…” innings.

Avella 17, Mapletown 6; Avella 11, Mapletown 1 – The Eagles remained unbeaten with a doubleheader sweep of the Maples in Section 1-A play.

Chas Rush homered in the first game for Avella (4-0, 8-0) which also got doubles from Brayden Fuller, Hayden Gatewood and Bryce Wright.

Carson Vanata doubled and Daniel Fox had two RBIs for Mapletown (0-4, 1-6).

Logan Fedak struck out 10 to earn the win and had three RBIs in the second game for the Eagles who also got two RBIs from Wright and a double from Rush.

Fox singled and scored the lone run for Mapletown.

Deer Lakes 9, Mount Pleasant 6 – Deer Lakes scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the host Vikings.

Anthony Smith drove in three runs for Deer Lakes (3-1, 3-3).

Cole Chatfield had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs for Mount Pleasant (3-1, 5-3).

West Greene 13, Sewickley Academy 2 – Darren Knight was 3 for 3 with three RBIs in the Pioneers’ non-section win over Sewickley Academy (0-4).

Xavier Lucey had a triple, single and two RBIs for West Greene (1-5).

Softball

Frazier 9, South Allegheny 4 – Grace Vaughn was 4 for 4 with a double and Grace Polkabla was 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs as the Lady Commodores handed the visiting Lady Gladiators their first loss of the season.

Emme Travalena added a double, single and two RBIs for Frazier (2-1), which also got a single and two RBIs from Gracen Hartman and a triple from Morgan Fisher.

Winning pitcher Addison Hiles allowed four hits and four walks while striking out 12.

Jefferson-Morgan 10, California 0 – Emilee Bazzoli pitched a shutout with 13 strikeouts and Gabby Marmie was 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs as the Lady Rockets (3-1) blanked the visiting Lady Trojans in a six-inning, non-section game.

Avery Filby doubled and Kayla Saeli had two hits for California (2-2).

Laurel Highlands 17, Ringgold 3 – Haylie Dirda had three hits, including a double and a home run, and knocked in six runs as the Fillies romped over the Lady Rams (0-1, 0-7) in a five-inning Section 2-4A game.

Kayla Howell also homered and added a single and three RBIs for Laurel Highlands (1-0, 2-3). Dirda earned the win, allowing one earned run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
