Local roundup: Leopards sweep LH, remain unbeaten
Belle Vernon pitching kept Laurel Highlands off the scoreboard for 12 of 14 innings on the way to a doubleheader sweep of the host Mustangs, 12-4 and 9-2, in Section 2-4A baseball action on Wednesday.
Parker Lind pitched 5 â…” scoreless innings to earn the win in the opener, allowing just two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Lucas Judy was 3 for 3 with a double and fired a complete-game, seven-hitter in the second game with one walk and six strikeouts, giving up just a pair of unearned runs. Judy took a shutout into the seventh inning.
Judy smacked a double and drove in three runs and Kole Doppelheuer contributed a triple, single, sacrifice fly and also had three RBIs in the first game for coach Tony Watson’s unbeaten Leopards (6-0, 7-0). Cole Matusik added a double and a triple and Alonzo Wade chipped in with a single and an RBI.
Brody Kutchman had two RBIs and Parker Hoff doubled for Laurel Highlands (0-4, 1-5) which scored all of its runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nick Fleszar took the loss.
Seth Tomalski doubled, singled and knocked in three runs in the second game in helping the Leopards build a 9-0 lead.
Kutchman and Nick Crouch both doubled and singled for the Mustangs who scored both their runs in the seventh inning. Noah Lion was the losing pitcher.
Waynesburg Central 6, Washington 2 – Derek Turcheck had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs as the Raiders remained unbeaten by knocking off the visiting Prexies in a Section 4-3A game.
Austin Surber didn’t allow a hit in 3 â…” scoreless innings to earn the win in relief of starter Alex VanSickle. Surber struck out 10 of the 13 batters he faced and walked one. VanSickle allowed one earned run on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts in 3 â…“ innings.
Kory Taylor had two hits and Grant Pack doubled for Waynesburg (4-0, 8-0) which also got a single and a sacrifice fly from Ethan Kiger.
Caleb Patton doubled and Tyler Bainer had a single and an RBI for Washington (0-6, 1-9) which also got two hits from Noah Patton. Isaac Charnik took the loss.
Ringgold 11, Albert Gallatin 0; Ringgold 10, Albert Gallatin 0 – Ashton Mincin tossed a five-inning perfect game with five strikeouts in the first game of a Section 2-4A doubleheader as the host Rams swept the Colonials, allowing a combined two hits.
James Nash had two hits and three RBIs in the five-inning first game for Ringgold (3-3, 4-6) which also got a double and single from both Gavin Angotti and Demetri Lowe, a double from Tyler Fisher and two hits and two RBIs from Sam Allen.
Jason Myers was the losing pitcher.
Angotti doubled, singled and had two RBIs, Lowe also doubled and singled and Andrew Spinkle had a triple and two RBIs in the five-inning second game. Fisher also had a two-hit game.
Winning pitcher Anthony Koziel gave up just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in 4 â…” innings.
Losing pitcher Luke Wilson and Jake Bellish had the lone hits for AG (2-4, 2-5).
California 10, Beth-Center 6 – Weston Monticelli had three hits, three RBIs and was the winning pitcher in the Trojans’ Section 1-2A win over the Bulldogs.
Logan Hartley and Kaden Weston had two RBIs apiece for California (3-0, 3-3).
Chase Bebout had two RBIs for Beth-Center (1-4, 2-4).
Carmichaels 3, Jeannette 0 – Colin Andrews three six scoreless innings to earn the win and had two hits, including a double, in the Mikes’ Section 1-A win over the Jayhawksd (0-2, 2-4).
Fort Cherry 13, Frazier 4 – Tyler Wolfe had three hits, including a home run, and five RBIs in the Rangers’ Section 1-2A victory over the Commodores.
Colton Temple had four hits with a home run and drove in three runs for Fort Cherry (4-1, 4-4).
Tyler Morrison had three hits and an RBI for Frazier (1-2, 4-3).
Seton LaSalle 3, Brownsville 1; Seton LaSalle 6, Brownsville 1 – The Rebels (4-1, 5-3) swept a Section 4-3A doubleheader with the Falcons.
Jeremiah McDonald had the lone RBI in the first game for Brownsville (2-4, 2-4). Geno Thorpe had two hits and the Falcons only RBI in the second game.
Thomas Jefferson 2, Connellsville 0 – Dominic Metz and Colin Pearson combined on the shutout as the Jaguars (3-0, 5-4) blanked the Falcons in a Section 4-5A game.
Carter Kirsch and Tyler Lesko drove in the only two runs of the game for Thomas Jefferson (3-0, 5-4)
Noah Zawislan had two hits for Connellsville (2-1, 6-2).
West Greene 11, Mapletown 2; West Greene 14, Mapletown 0 – The Pioneers took both games of a Section 1-A doubleheader against the Maples.
Lane Allison doubled and allowed two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in 6 â…“ innings to earn the win in the opener for West Greene (2-2, 3-6) which got three hits and two RBIS from Logan Shields.
Hayden Hamilton threw a five-inning, three-hitter with 13 strikeouts to earn the win in the second game for the Pioneers who got a double and three RBIs from Shields.
Daniel Fox knocked in both of the runs for Mapletown (0-6, 1-8) in the first game and doubled in the second game.
Yough 8, Southmoreland 1; Yough 6, Southmoreland 2 – The Cougars swept a Section 3-3A doubleheader against the Scotties.
Nate Bell struck out 10 to earn the win in the first game for Yough (2-2, 2-4). Brenden Geho doubled and had the only RBI for Southmoreland (0-6, 1-8).
Jake Williams was the winning pitcher and Bell had three hits and three RBIs in the second game for the Cougars.
Jake Govern, who doubled, and Bell had the only RBIs for the Scotties.
Softball
Uniontown 12, Ringgold 1 – Emmaleigh Noah had three hits and was the winning pitcher in the visiting Lady Raiders’ five-inning, Section 2-4A victory at Ringgold.
Noah threw a three-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Lauren White and Graci Rodeheaver each had two hits and two RBIs for Uniontown (1-2, 3-4) which also got two hits apiece from Lyric McLee and Alexa Budner and a double from Juliet White.
Losing pitcher Megan Powell hit a solo home run in the first inning for the Lady Rams (0-4, 0-10).
Carmichaels 11, Avella 0 – Bailey Barnyak had three hits, including a home run and a triple, and two RBIs and threw a five-inning, three-hit shutout in the Lady Mikes’ Section 2-A victory over the Lady Eagles (0-2, 1-6).
Barnyak walked three while striking out 15 of the 21 batters she faced.
Duski Staggers had two hits and two RBIs and Ashton Batis and Ke’Lani Chun added two hits apiece for Carmichaels (1-0, 5-0) which also got two RBIs from Ali Jacobs and a double from Kaitlyn Waggett.
Frazier 6, Brownsville 0 – Emme Travalena bashed two home runs and a double while knocking in four runs and winning pitcher Addisonn Hiles threw a five-hittier with eight strikeouts as the Lady Commodores blanked the Lady Falcons in a Section 4-2A game.
Grace Vaughn added a double and an inside-the-park home run for Frazier (2-0, 5-1).
Losing pitcher Ava Clark struck out 15 for Brownsville (0-1, 3-3) which got two hits from Zaydee Downer.
West Greene 10, Mapletown 0 – Payton Gilbert threw a two-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts as the host Lady Pioneers (2-0, 7-0) remained undefeated with a five-inning, Section 2-A win over the Lady Maples (0-2, 2-5).
Mapletown’s Marley Shiflett and Treslee Weston singled to start off the game for Mapletown but Gilbert wouldn’t allow another hit.
Marissa Tharp and Kendra Tharp each hit a double for West Greene.
Jefferson-Morgan 14, Beth-Center 1 – Ashlynn Snyder was 4 for 4 with four RBIs in the Lady Rockets’ Section 2-A win over the Lady Bulldogs.
Ava Wood knocked in three runs for J-M (1-0, 4-1) which also got a double form Gabby Marmie
Kendall Welsh doubled for Beth-Center (1-1, 1-5).
Trinity 7, Connellsville 6 – Nina Christy hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the Lady Hillers two-run seventh inning to rally Trinity to a Section 4-5A victory at Connellsville.
Winning pitcher Maddie Ray allowed five hits, one walk and two hit batters while striking out seven and also singled twice. Gabriella Humphreys doubled for the Lady Hillers (3-1, 5-5).
Kalyn Cole hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Lady Falcons (0-1, 4-1) who built a 6-1 lead but Trinity scored the final six runs, including four in the sixth.
Cali Leichliter doubled and singled and Molly Greenawalt knocked in two runs for Connellsvlle. Losing pitcher Kendal King surrendered 12 hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Bethel Park 9, Albert Gallatin 0 – Anastasia Spano was 3 for 4, including two triples, and Taylor Striegel threw a four-hit shutout as the Lady Black Hawks beat the Lady Colonials in a Section 4-5A game.
Madison Timms and Presley Thimons both doubled and singled for Bethel Park (2-0, 6-0) which also got two hits from Nina DePasquale. Striegel struck out five and walked one.
Jenna Myers, Hannah Dunham, Mikayla Shea, and Kylee Augustine each had a single for Albert Gallatin (0-3, 2-4).
Belle Vernon 7, Laurel Highlands 6 – Maddie Grisnik had three hits and was the winning pitcher as the Lady Leopards scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to edge the host Fillies in a Section 2-4A game.
Belle Vernon (2-1, 4-5) led 6-1 when Laurel Highlands rallied to tie the game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and neither team could score again until the ninth.
Kaylee Sypolt doubled and singled and Mia Zubovic also had two hits for the Lady Leopards who also got a single and two RBIs from both Sydney Callaway and Mailey Hayes. Grisnik pitched all nine innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts.
Payton Senge homered and singled and Aubrey Speelman also hit a home run for Laurel Highlands (2-1, 3-4) which also got a single and two RBIs from Chole Komacko.
Senge took the loss, surrendering six earned runs on 11 hits with three walks and 13 strikeouts in tossing a complete game.
Bentworth 12, California 1 – Sydney Gonglik drove in four runs with a pair of triples and Willow Eckels was the winning pitcher as the Lady Bearcats (1-0, 4-3) beat the Lady Trojans (0-2, 2-4) in a Section 4-2A game.
Avery Filby drove in the only run for California which got two hits apiece from Madyson Morton and Kayla Saeli.
Mount Pleasant 6, Deer Lakes 0 – Gianna Stanek had three hits, including a double, and three a six-hit shutout as the Lady Vikings (2-0, 4-3) beat Deer Lakes (0-1, 2-6) in a Section 1-3A game.
Kendra Brunson had a double and two RBIs for Mount Pleasant.
Southmoreland 7, Yough 4 – Makayla Etling doubled twice as the Lady Scotties (1-0, 3-2) triumphed over the Lady Cougars (0-1, 2-3) in a Section 1-3A game.
Taryn Hollis had two RBIs for Southmoreland.
Kiersten Odelli doubled for Yough.
Waynesburg Central 11, Washington 2 – Kylee Schaum homered and winning pitcher Gina Tedrow recorded 17 strikeouts as the Lady Raiders (1-0, 4-3) beat the Lady Prexies (0-1, 4-1) in a Section 4-2A game.
Breanna Kerr added a double for Waynesburg.
