Local roundup: Lady Mikes hold off J-M to remain unbeaten
Bailey Barnyak threw a four-hitter and struck out 12, including the final two batters with the tying run on second base, as Carmichaels fended off visiting Jefferson-Morgan, 3-2, in a Section 2-A softball battle Wednesday.
The unbeaten Lady Mikes (4-0, 8-0) built a 3-0 lead and hung on from there.
Barnyak hit a run-scoring single in the first inning and Carmichaels made it 2-0 in the third when Kaitlyn Waggett tripled and scored on a squeeze bunt by Ashton Batis. Carys McConnell drove in what proved to be the winning run for the Lady Mikes in the fifth when she followed a double by Batis with a run-scoring single.
The Lady Rockets (2-2, 5-3) cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Gabby Marmie and Ashlynn Snyder both singled and Brooklynne Snyder hit a two-run double.
Jefferson-Morgan threatened in the seventh when Ava Wood reached on an error and was bunted to second by Addyson Teagarden, but Barnyak closed out the game with two strikeouts.
Marmie had two hits, including a double, for J-M. Losing pitcher Emilee Bazzoli allowed five hits and four walks with 11 strikeouts.
Ke’Lani Chun doubled for Carmichaels. Barnyak gave up four hits and no walks.
Laurel Highlands 10, Ringgold 6 – Gianna Miller knocked in four runs with a pair of home runs and a single as the Fillies topped the Lady Rams in a Section 2-4A game.
Payton Rambo had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs for Laurel Highlands (3-3, 4-6).
Addison Jenkins drove in three runs with two hits for Ringgold (0-5, 0-11).
Elizabeth Forward 4, Uniontown 2 – Sophie Pasinsky’s two-run homer in the sixth inning was the difference as the Lady Warriors beat the visiting Lady Raiders in a Section 2-4A game.
Alivia Grimm had two hits and an RBI for EF (5-1, 7-2) which also got a triple from Aubri Cimba. Winning pitcher Julia Johnson allowed five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.
Losing pitcher Emmaleigh Noah singled and hit a solo home run for Uniontown (4-3, 6-5) and Lyric McLee had an RBI. Noah gave up six hits and one walk with one strikeout.
Trinity 15, Albert Gallatin 0 – Hanna Suhoski had three hits, including two doubles, and scored four runs as the Lady Hillers blanked the Lady Colonials in a four-inning Section 4-5A game.
Madelyn Hall and Madison Ray both doubled and singled for Trinity (6-1, 8-5). Winning pitcher Gabriella Humphreys struck out five and walked none.
Hannah Dunham was 2 for 2 with a double for Albert Gallatin (0-5, 2-6).
West Mifflin 9, Belle Vernon 4 – Mia Bey hit a grand slam and had five RBIs as the Lady Titans built a 9-0 lead in route to a Section 2-4A win over the host Lady Leopards.
Kaleigh Tatters had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs for West Mifflin (6-1, 8-4) which also got a pair of singles from Aubrey Jaskulski.
Lauren VanDivner hit a three-run homer for Belle Vernon (3-3, 5-7) which also got two hits from Mailey Hayes and a single and an RBI from Belle Williams.
West Greene 12, Avella 1 – Payton Gilbert pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and had two hits and two RBIs as the Lady Pioneers rolled past the host Lady Eagles in a six-inning Section 2-A game.
Marissa Tharp doubled, singled and knocked in three runs, Khyler Davis had three hits and Kendra Tharp doubled for West Greene (5-1, 10-1) which also got two hits apiece from Kylee Davis, Sammi Zimmerman and Katie Brudnock.
Ginny Smith hit a double for Avella (0-4, 1-8). Emily Buel took the loss.
Beth-Center 9, Mapletown 5 – Allison Lynch hit a triple and knocked in four runs as the Lady Bulldogs (2-3, 2-7) triumphed over the Lady Maples in a Section 2-A game.
Makenna Lotspeich had a triple and an RBI for Mapletown (1-4, 3-7).
Mount Pleasant 6, Ligonier Valley 2 – Gigi Stanek drove in four runs with a trio of doubles and was the winning pitcher as the Lady Vikings topped the Lady Rams in a Section 1-3A game.
Ella Alakson doubled twice for Mount Pleasant (5-0, 7-3) which also got three hits, including a double, from Danica Trainer. Stanek gave up two unearned runs on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Allison Heffelfiinger, Maggie Peters and Abigail Springer each had two hits for Ligonier Valley (2-1, 2-6).
Baseball
Thomas Jefferson 6, Connellsville 0 – Eli Graff had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs as the Jaguars (5-0, 7-3) shut out the Falcons in a Section 4-5A game.
Winning pitcher Tyler Lesko pitched four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Matthew Firestone doubled and singled for Connellsville (4-2, 8-3).
