Burgettstown holds off Trojans, 3-2
Matthew Bredel drove in the go-ahead run and was the winning pitcher as Burgettstown edged host California, 3-2, in a Section 1-2A baseball game Saturday.
With the score tied 2-2 in the top of the fifth, Caleb Matalik singled for the Blue Devils (5-1, 7-1), took second on Trent Stevens’ sacrifice bunt and scored on Bredel’s single to center.
Bredel allowed one earned run on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in 6 ½ innings.
Jaylen Roach relieved Bredel in the seventh and recorded the final two outs to earn the save.
Burgettstown only managed three hits but one was a two-run run single by Sam Elich in the first inning, which included two California errors, to put the visitors ahead 2-0.
The Trojans (4-2, 4-5) made it 2-1 in the bottom of the first when Kaden Weston singled, Weston Monticelli hit into a force out, took second when Ricky Lawson walked and scored on Logan Hartley’s single.
California tied at 2-2 in the fourth inning when Eli Carpenter singled and scored on Colton Lowden’s double.
Lowden had two of the Trojans’ six hits.
Caden Monticelli took the tough-luck loss, pitching a complete game while surrendering one earned run on three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
