Local roundup: Johns, Hoff lift Mustangs over Uniontown, 4-0

Parker Hoff drove in three runs with a home run and a double and Jack Johns tossed a four-hit shutout as host Laurel Highlands defeated Uniontown, 4-0, halting the Mustangs’ 10-game losing streak in a Section 2-4A baseball clash Monday.

Johns walked none and struck out two.

Andrew Gallick and Connor Damico each also had two hits for Laurel Highlands (1-8, 2-10). Noah Lion had the other RBI for the Mustangs.

Elim Martin had two hits for the Red Raiders (0-9, 2-11).

Uniontown threatened in the first inning when Luke Gresh reached on an error and Martin singled to start the game but Johns got a double-play grounder to shortstop Hoff and a ground out to work out of the jam.

Laurel Highlands got the only run it would need in the bottom of the third when Noah Lion was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Hoff made it 2-0 with a solo home run to left in the fifth and capped the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth.

Losing pitcher Caleb Bartock threw a complete game, allowing three earned runs on just four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Belle Vernon 10, Albert Gallatin 0 – Parker Lind fired a six-inning, one-hitter with 16 strikeouts as the host Leopards shut out the Colonials (4-7, 4-10-1) in a Section 2-4A game.

Connor Bergman doubled, singled and knocked in two runs and Seth Tomalski also had two hits and two RBIs for Belle Vernon (7-2, 10-3).

Cole Matusik contributed two hits and scored three runs, Chase Petrosky doubled and singled and Lucas Judy hit a double for the Leopards who also got two RBIs from Alonzo Wade.

The only hit allowed by Lind, who walked three, was a double to losing pitcher Geno Valenti.

Carmichaels 11, Avella 3 – Robbie Wilson-Jones was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Carmichaels scored in every inning on the way to a Section 1-A win over the visiting Eagles.

Winning pitcher Colin Andrews gave up two earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts inn five innings and Wilson-Jones recorded the final six outs for the Mikes (6-3, 9-4).

Carmichaels scored twice in the first then loaded the bases with none out in the second when Brayden Andrews walked, Parker Hewitt was hit by a pitch and Dayton Reynolds reached on a bunt single. Colin Andrews followed with a run-scoring single and Hewitt came home on an outfield error. Wilson-Jones’ sacrifice fly made it 5-0 and an error allowed another run to score for a 6-0 Mikes advantage.

Carmichaels added single runs in the third and fourth, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

Brayden Andrews had a single and two RBIs and Reynolds had two his and an RBI.

Losing pitcher Bryce Wright gave up four earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts in four innings.

Brayden Fuller had two hits for Avella (6-5, 10-5).

Waynesburg Central 2, Keystone Oaks 0 – Tyler Groves allowed one hit over 6 â…” scoreless innings and doubled and singled as the first-place Raiders blanked the host Golden Eagles in a Section 4-3A game.

Groves, who struck out seven and walked three, hit the pitch count with two outs in the seventh inning. Austin Surber relieved to record the final out and earn the save. CJ Corwin had two hits and an RBI and Jake Stephenson doubled and singled for the Raiders.

Waynesburg (9-0, 13-1) scored the only run it would need in the top of the fourth when Stephenson walked, stole second and came home on Kory Taylor’s single. Corwin’s RBI single made it 2-0 in the sixth.

Jack Hrivnak had the lone hit for Keystone Oaks (4-5, 7-6).

Burgettstown 4, Frazier 3 – Sam Elich had two hits and three RBIs to help lead the host Blue Devils past the Commodores in a Section 1-2A game.

Winning pitcher Matthew Bredel and Jayden Roach also had two hits for Burgettstown (8-1, 10-1) which is tied for first place with Fort Cherry. Bredel allowed two earned runs on nine hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in tossing a complete game.

Losing pitcher Brant Alekson also went the distance, surrendering seven hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts and also doubled.

Chase Fulmer had two hits and an RBI for Frazier (3-6, 7-7) which also got a double and single from both Aidan Hardy and Dylan Keilbaugh and two hits from Tyler Monack.

Connellsville 3, Gateway 0 – Mason Miller twirled a five-hit shutout in the host Falcons’ Section 4-5A win over the Gators.

Miller walked none and struck out five.

Matthew Firestone hit a run-scoring triple in the top of the first inning for Connellsville (5-4, 10-5) and that would be enough for Miller who walked none and struck out five.

The Falcons tacked on two more runs in the second on Jonathan Kelly’s RBI single and a balk.

Grady Dunsmore doubled for Gateway (2-7, 6-11). Jon Saunders took the loss.

Jefferson-Morgan 7, Chartiers-Houston 0 – John Woodward and Brayden Ellsworth combined on a four-hit shutout and Dayten Marion smacked a pair of triples and had two RBIs as the Rockets shut down the Buccaneers in a non-section game.

Woodward, who was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, gave up the four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in four innings to earn the win. Ellsworth finished up with three scoreless innings, walking none and striking out one, to earn the save and also contributed a double.

Drew Adams also doubled for J-M (10-3).

Josiah Moushlian doubled and singled for C-H (6-7).

Fort Cherry 4, California 3 – Ryan Huey hit an RBI triple and Landon Trnavsky hit a run-scoring double as the Rangers (8-1, 10-4) remained tied atop the Section 1-2A standings with a win over the Trojans.

Eli Carpenter knocked in two of the three runs for California (5-4, 5-8).

Greensburg Central Catholic 15, West Greene 0 – Tyler Samide knocked in two runs and was the winning pitcher as the first-place Centurions rolled past the Pioneers in a Section 1-A game.

Brody Bothell added three hits for GCC (7-1, 9-2).

The only two hits for West Greene (2-7, 3-11) were singles by Darren Knight and Lane Allison.

Jeannette 5, Mapletown 3 – Jayden Kennedy had two hits, two RBIs and was the winning pitcher as the Jayhawks (4-4, 6-7) fought off the Maples in a Section 1-A battle.

Lucas Stevenson and Josh Howard both had three hits for Mapletown (0-9, 2-11) which also got a double, single and two RBIs from Carson Vanata and two hits from Cam Shaffer.

Charleroi 8, Brownsville 3 – Kaden Woods had three hits as the Cougars (6-3, 8-5) beat the Falcons (3-8, 4-9) in a Section 4-3A game.

Camden Kline hit a double for Brownsville.

Ligonier Valley 12, Southmoreland 0 – Noah Knupp had two hits and four RBIs as the Rams shut out the Scotties in a Section 3-3A game.

Mount Pleasant 4, Ringgold 2 – Winning pitcher Carter Strayer helped his own cause with a double and two RBIs as the Vikings edged the Rams in a non-section game.

Jacob Kitz also had an RBI for Mount Pleasant (12-4).

Gavin Angotti drove in a run for Ringgold (7-9).

Softball

Laurel Highlands 5, West Mifflin 4 – Payton Rambo hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Fillies a dramatic Section 2-4A win over visiting West Mifflin to knock the Lady Titans out of a first-place tie with Elizabeth Forward.

Winning pitcher Payton Senge tossed a complete game, allowing four runs and one walk with 12 strikeouts, and helped her own cause with a double.

Rambo also tripled, walked and scored twice for Laurel Highlands (5-5, 6-8) which moved within a half game of fourth-place Belle Vernon. Izzy Coleman was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run for LH, which also got a double from Emelia Cavaliere.

Caleigh Ignat homered and Kaleigh Tatters doubled for the Lady Titans (8-2, 10-5).

Elizabeth Forward 12, Belle Vernon 2 – Berlin Holibaugh was 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the Lady Warriors’ five-inning Section 2-4A win over the Lady Leopards.

Addyson Nigut and winning pitcher Julia Johnson both had a double, single and an RBI for EF (9-1, 11-2) which also got three RBIs from Hannah Evans and two RBIs apiece from Sophie Pasinsky, Addison Musisko and Julia Resnik.

Katie Sokol and Lauren VanDivner each had a single and an RBI for Belle Vernon (6-5, 8-9).

Uniontown 6, Oakland Catholic 3 – Emmaleigh Noah tripled, doubled and singled and was the winning pitcher as the Lady Raiders triumphed over Oakland Catholic (0-9, 1-10) in a Section 2-4A game.

Lauren White also had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs for Uniontown (7-4, 9-6) which also got a triple from Alivia Noah.

Madison Pullen doubled for OC.

Frazier 7, Waynesburg Central 3 – Grace Vaughn had three hits and two RBIs as the Lady Commodores took over sole possession of first place in Section 4-2A by defeating the host Lady Raiders.

Emme Travalena had two hit and an RBI for Frazier (7-1, 10-2) and winning pitcher Addison Hiles had a single and two RBIs. Hiles allowed three unearned runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Ellie Makel had a single and two RBIs for Waynesburg (6-2, 9-5) which also got two hits apiece from Bre Kerr and Avery Davis. Losing pitcher Gina Tedrow gave up 10 hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts.

Brownsville 5, California 2 – Ava Clark pitched a five-hitter with 18 strikeouts and Lena Rechichar hit a home run as the Lady Falcons rallied past the visiting Lady Trojans in a Section 4-2A game.

California (0-6, 2-8) led 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Brownsville struck for four runs to take the lead for good. Jordyn Davis started the rally with a two-out single, Clark reached on an infield hit and Davis scored on a throwing error to tie it. Long followed with a go-ahead RBI double to right and Lyla Gill hit a run-scoring single to make it 4-2.

Rechichar hit a solo home run in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Kayla Saeli doubled for the Lady Trojans. Olivia Lenkey took the loss.

Carmichaels 9, Beth-Center 1 – Bailey Barnyak threw a three-hitter with 17 strikeouts and no walks and added a double, single and two RBIs with the bat in the Lady Mikes’ Section 2-A game at Beth-Center.

Carys McConnell, Ke’Lana Chun and Ashton Batis each also had two hits and two RBIs for unbeaten Carmichaels (7-0, 11-0) which also got a pair of doubles and an RBI from Ali Jacobs.

Alli Lynch doubled in Kendall Welsh in the sixth inning for the lone run for B-C (2-6, 2-10), which also got a double from Sarah Bader. Hannah Belmont took the loss.

Avella 12, Mapletown 2 – Avrey Rado homered, Taylor Shirley tripled and Emily Buel doubled as the Lady Eagles triumphed over the Lady Maples.

Emma Johnson had four RBIs for Avella (3-5, 4-9).

Marley Shiflett had two hits for Mapletown (1-8, 3-11).

Baldwin 15, Albert Gallatin 0 – Melina Defelice threw a four-inning no-hitter as the Lady Highlanders (9-2, 13-3) beat the Lady Colonials (0-9, 2-10) in a Section 4-5A game.

Southmoreland 14, Burrell 9 – Makayla Etling was 4 for 4 with a pair of home runs, a double and four RBIs in the Lady Scotties’ Section 1-3A victory over the Lady Bucs.

Pyper Ferres was 5 for 5 with a trio of doubles and three RBIs for Burrell (3-7, 7-10) which also got a home run and three RBIs from Belle Steward.

Thomas Jefferson 8, Connellsville 4 – The Lady Jaguars scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to outlast the lost Lady Falcons in a Section 4-5A game.

Adalina Bracco doubled, singled and knocked in five runs and Zoie DeCostro also hit a double for TJ (7-2, 9-5).

Molly Greenawalt had two hits, including a double, for Connellsville (6-4, 10-4).
