Frazier center fielder Chase Fulmer prepares to throw the ball back to the infield during a game this past season. Fulmer is one of five area players who were named to the Pennsylvania Baseball Coaches Association All-State Team.

Chase Fulmer wasn’t looking to receive any honors when the 2025 high school baseball season began.

The Frazier junior was just happy to be patrolling center field again.

“Last year I tore my knee the third game of the season, the MPFL (medial patellofemoral ligament) that holds your kneecap in place,” Fulmer explained. “I had to have surgery and missed the rest of the year.”

Fulmer came back strong enough this year to be one of five area players who were selected to the Pennsylvania Baseball Coaches Association All-State Team.

Belle Vernon senior left-handed pitcher Parker Lind was named to the Class 4A First Team. Second Team selections were Connellsville senior Grayden Gillott as a Class 5A infielder, Waynesburg Central’s Tyler Groves, a senior, and Austin Surber, a junior, as Class 3A pitchers and Fulmer as a Class 2A outfielder.

Fulmer batted .453 with two home runs, 15 RBIs, 11 stolen bases and 15 runs and had a .623 slugging percentage.

“I was obviously pretty proud,” Fulmer said about his reaction when he heard he was chosen for the All-State team.

He reflected on his journey back to the field after his surgery.

“It was definitely a long process, at least six or seven months until I got cleared,” Fulmer said. “There were definitely a lot of ups and downs, definitely a lot of pain and hard days. But I kept at it and made it through. I’m a lot stronger and better now.

“It feels good to see all the hard work I put in pay off.”

Frazier had a 9-9 overall record but a 4-8 section mark left them in a three-way for fourth place with Chartiers-Houston and Beth-Center. The Commodores split with both teams but the Buccaneers two-game sweep of the Bulldogs gave them the tiebreaker and a spot in the postseason.

“We thought we were a good team and deserved to be in the playoffs,” Fulmer said. “We want to make it next year. That’s something they haven’t done here for a while. I think we have the players to do it.”

The Commodores had some significant wins, including 1-0 at playoff qualifier California and 7-2 in their season finale over Ringgold.

“That was our senior day,” Fulmer said. “Ringgold was a playoff team in 4A so it felt good to send our seniors off with a win against a good team like that.”

Fulmer also is a key member of Frazier’s football team as a running back, receiver and safety. He scored four touchdowns as a sophomore but the knee injury also forced him to miss last year’s football season.

The slick-fielding Gillott, who batted .435 with 22 runs and 21 RBIs in helping the Falcons qualify for the postseason and earn a playoff win, wasn’t expecting an All-State honor.

“I had no clue I was getting that,” said Gillott, who will continue his baseball career at Garrett College in Maryland.

Gillott cited the talent level in Class 5A as helping him improve as a player.

“There’s always good pitching,” Gillott said. “It’s always competitive. There are no slouches.”

Gillott said talent and hard work was key to his development.

“It comes pretty natural, just being athletic, but I always work at it, too,” Gillott said.

Lind, a was 9-1 with a 0.70 ERA in helping lead the Leopards into the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals. The Kent State recruit was the winning pitcher in Belle Vernon’s first-round and quarterfinal playoff games, allowing no runs in a combined 13 ⅔ innings.

Groves was 9-1 with a 1.76 ERA and also batted .385. Surber was 5-0 with a 1.85 ERA and hit .288. The two helped the Raiders win a section title and earn a playoff victory.
