Local roundup: McConnellÄ¢¹½ÊÓÆµ homer propels Lady Mikes to victory
Carys McConnell’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning propelled Carmichaels to a 3-2 victory over visiting McGuffey in a non-section softball battle Monday afternoon.
Miley Main hit a solo home run in the first inning and added an RBI in the third to give the Lady Highlanders (1-1) a 2-1 lead.
Kali Franks’ single was the only other hit off winning pitcher Bailey Barnyak who walked four and struck out 10.
Aston Batis had two hits, including a double, for Carmichaels (2-0) which also got a triple from Kaitlyn Waggett.
Losing pitcher McKenna Crothers walked none and struck out one.
Connellsville 10, Latrobe 8 – Cali Leichliter bashed three home runs in a four-hit game with four RBIs as the Lady Falcons knocked off Latrobe in a non-section game.
Connellsville (2-0) also got home runs from Kalyn Cole and Molly Greenawalt. Cole also doubled.
Marshall County (Tenn.) 3, Waynesburg Central 2 – Eryn Ketchum hit a triple and Abby Leverette was the winning pitcher in Marshall County’s non-section over the Lady Raiders in Tennessee.
Ellie Makell hit a double for Waynesburg (1-2).
Mogadore (Ohio) 6, Brownsville 2 – Ava Clark had 15 strikeouts but the Lady Falcons fell to Mogadore in a non-section game in Tennessee.
Alexa Pellick had two hits for Brownsville (2-1).
South Park 5, Uniontown 0 – Lady Eagles pitchers Sydney Sekely, who pitched six innings, and Reese Katich combined to throw a perfect game in a non-section win over the Lady Raiders (1-1).
Sekely and Kylie Mettrick each had two hits for South Park (3-0).
Baseball
Frazier 8, Bentworth 1 – Brant Alekson smacked three hits, including a double, knocked in two runs and had a stolen base as the host Commodores opened Section 1-2A play with a win over the Bearcats.
Tyler Morrison doubled, singled and knocked in a run for Frazier (1-0, 4-0) which also got a double from Dailan McManus and one RBI apiece from Chase Fulmer and Brady Secrest.
Winning pitcher Aidan Hardy gave up one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 6 â…“ innings.
Lucas Burt hit a double for Bentworth (0-1, 0-1).
Avella 4, West Greene 3 – Tristan Davis’ run-scoring groundout in the top of the eighth inning gave the visiting Eagles a Section 1-A win over the Pioneers.
Starting pitcher Bryce Wright homered, doubled and drove in two runs for Avella (1-0, 5-0). Brayden Fuller picked up the win in relief.
West Greene trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh but tied the game on a two-run single by Dylan Hughes who finished with three RBIs.
Deer Lakes 13, Southmoreland 3 – Ben Shurina knocked in four runs with a home run and a pair of singles as Deer Lakes (1-0, 1-2) beat the Scotties in a Section 3-3A game.
Blake McLaughlin had two RBIs for Southmoreland (0-1, 1-2).
Fort Cherry 3, Beth-Center 2 – Matt Sieg hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the host Rangers a Section 1-2A victory over the Bulldogs.
Colton Temple homered for Fort Cherry (1-0, 1-2).
Ashten Pinkney homered and drove in both runs for Beth-Center (0-1, 1-1).
Mount Pleasant 10, Freeport 2 – Cole Chatfield doubled and singled in the Vikings’ Section 3-3A win over Freeport. (0-1, 1-2).
Connor Drzal was the winning pitcher.
West Mifflin 6, Albert Gallatin 0 – Chase Maggio was 3 for 3 with a double in the Titans’ Section 2-4A victory over the Colonials.
Derek Tudek had two hits and three RBIs for West Mifflin (1-0, 3-2).
Jason Myers hit a double for Albert Gallatin (0-1, 0-2).
