Local roundup: Adams’ walk-off hit lifts Rockets over Jeannette, 1-0

John Woodward and Brayden Ellsworth combined on a six-hit shutout and Drew Adams had two of Jefferson-Morgan’s three hits, including a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the host Rockets a 1-0 win over Jeannette in a Section 1-A baseball battle Tuesday.

Jefferson-Morgan (8-3, 12-3) needed a win at Jeannette on Wednesday to finish in a tie with Carmichaels for second place in the section. The loss eliminated the Jayhawks (5-6. 8-9) from playoff contention and clinched fourth place for idle Avella (6-6, 10-7) which swept its two-game series with Jeannette.

Brenton Barnhart led off the bottom of the seventh by drawing a walk against losing pitcher Wyatt Schaeffer and pinch-runner Liam Rogers advanced to second on an error. Two outs later Adams brought in Rogers with the winning run on a single to left.

Adams also had the only extra-base hit of the game with a double.

Woodward gave up four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in 5 â…” innings while Ellsworth gave up two hits and a walk in 1 â…“ inning to earn the win.

Schaeffer was the hard-luck loser, going the distance on a three-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts. Kenny Himes had two hits for the Jayhawks.

West Mifflin 7, Belle Vernon 5 – Chase Maggio and Eli Kurta drove in two runs apiece with a double and a single as the Titans wrapped up a least a share of first place in Section 2-4A with a victory over the visiting Leopards, who needed a win and an Elizabeth Forward loss at Uniontown to claim the section title. The Warriors-Red Raiders game was rained out.

Cody Thornton also had two RBIs and Derek Tudek also doubled and singled for West Mifflin (10-2, 15-5) and Ryan Buchleitner hit a double.

Winning pitcher Jake Martina allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 6 â…” innings. Caden Wills recorded the final out with two runners on base to earn the save.

Alonzo Wade doubled and singled and Seth Tomalski also had two hits for Belle Vernon (9-3, 14-3) which also got a two-run double from Parker Lind in a three-run seventh inning. Kole Doppelheuer and Zach Plymire each had an RBI for the Leopards.

Losing pitcher Lucas Judy surrendered four earned runs on 11 hits with no walks and one strikeout in 5 ½ innings.

Greensburg Central Catholic 19, Mapletown 0 – Tyler Samide threw a four-inning no-hitter as the Centurions wrapped up sole possession of the Section 1-A title with a win over the host Maples (0-11, 2-13).

Jackson McMullen hit a three-run homer and Anthony Grippo was 4 for 4, including a pair of doubles, for GCC (10-1, 13-2). Samide struck out 10.

Softball

West Mifflin 6, Frazier 5 – Caleigh Ignat had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and an RBI and Rylie Dobnak also had three hits with two RBIs as the Class 4A Lady Titans rallied past the Class 2A Lady Commodores in a non-section clash.

Mia Bey drove in three runs with a pair of doubles for West Mifflin (13-6) which also got a triple from Samantha Tomko and a double from Aubrey Jaskulski. Annabelle Graham allowed one run in scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

Frazier (13-3) got singles from Addison Hiles, Emme Travalena and Grace Vaughn in a four-run third inning to go up 4-0. The Lady Commodores led 5-2 when the Lady Titans rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth with Dobnak’s RBI double putting the hosts ahead.

Vaughn had two of Frazier’s four hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Losing pitcher Hiles gave up five earned runs on 13 hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 5 â…” innings.
