Local roundup: Monticelli pitches Trojans past Bucs, 5-1

Caden Monticelli fired a five-hitter and Parker Gillen hit a two-run double to spark California to a 5-1 victory over visiting Chartiers-Houston in Section 1-2A baseball action Wednesday.

The win secured sole possession of third place in the section for the Trojans (6-5, 7-9).

Kaden Weston had two hits for California which also got a single and an RBI each from Ricky Lawson, Eli Carpenter and Colton Lowden. Monticelli walked none and struck out five.

Josiah Moushlian had two hits for the Buccaneers (4-7, 7-8) who also got a double from Aaron Walsh. Losing pitcher Luke Berish gave up three runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 4 â…“ innings.

Charleroi 2, Waynesburg Central 1; Waynesburg Central 11, Charleroi 2 – Alex VanSickle was 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs as the Raiders gained a split of their Section 3-3A doubleheader with Charleroi by rolling to a nine-run win in the second game. The Cougars won the first game on Brock Henderson’s walk-off grounder in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Waynesburg (11-1, 15-3), which already had sole possession of the Section 3-3A championship wrapped up going into the twinbill, got two hits and two RBIs apiece from winning pitcher Tyler Groves and Jake Stephenson in the second game. Austin Surber, Derek Turcheck and Ethan Kiger each also had two hits for the Raiders who scored twice in the first inning then blew the game open with a seven-run rally in the second.

Groves allowed two runs on three hits with six walks and six strikeouts in 5 â…“ innings. VanSickle recorded the final five outs, giving up one hit while striking out two.

Henderson doubled and Lazer Glasser had a hit and an RBI for Chaleroi (8-4, 10-6). Logan Usher took the loss.

Usher scored the winning run in the first game as a courtesy runner for Jack Gelder who was hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the eighth. Usher advanced to third on Masyn Grooms’ single and scored when Henderson’s ground ball was misplayed for an error.

Gelder pitched all eight innings to earn the win, allowing five hits and four walks with 10 strikeouts. Dylan Klinger reached base five times with two hits and three walks for the Cougars who also got a single and an RBI from Glasser.

C.J. Corwin took the loss. He gave up one earned run on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 4 â…“ innings. Surber started and allowed no hits but five walks with four strikeouts in three innings.

Surber drove in the Raiders’ lone run with a double in the fifth and VanSickle also doubled.

Jefferson-Morgan 8, Jeannette 1 – Drew Adams threw a five-hitter and John Woodward and Brenton Barnhart both had two hits and two RBIs as the Rockets soared past the host Jayhawks to earn a share of second-place with Carmichaels in Section 1-A.

Adams and Joe Bair each had a single and an RBI for Jefferson-Morgan (9-3, 13-3) which ended the regular season on a 12-game winning streak. Adams walked three and struck out nine.

Jayden Kennedy had two hits and Wyatt Schaeffer drove in the lone run for Jeannette (5-7, 8-10).

Carmichaels 6, West Greene 1 – Jase Zdravecky twirled a seven-hitter and the Mikes scored all their runs in the fourth inning on their way to a Section 1-A victory at West Greene.

The Mikes finished in a second-place tie with Jefferson-Morgan in the section.

Zdravecky walked none and struck out nine while allowing one unearned run.

Robbie Wilson-Jones and Jordan Davis both doubled and Colin Andrews had two hits for the Mikes (9-3, 12-4) who got run-scoring singles from Cooper Richards, Brayden Andrews and Ryder Krieg in their big sixth inning.

Jackson Grimes was 3 for 4 and losing pitcher Haiden Hamilton had two hits for the Pioneers (2-10, 3-14). Hamilton surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in five innings.

Ringgold 6, Laurel Highlands 0 – Tyler Fisher and Ashton Mincin combined on a two-hit shutout as the Rams blanked the visiting Mustangs in a Section 2-4A game.

Fisher gave up one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts in five innings to earn the win. Mincin recorded the final six outs to secure the save.

Sam Allen doubled twice and knocked in three runs for Ringgold (7-5, 9-9) which also got a double and a single from Gavin Angotti and two hits from Alex Kolano.

The only hits for Laurel Highlands (2-10, 3-13) were a double by Sevi Vecchiolla and a single by Aiden Milsom. Nick Fleszar took the loss.

Freeport 12, Southmoreland 0; Freeport 10, Southmoreland 0 – The Yellowjackets blanked the Scotties in both games of a Section 3-3A doubleheader.

Kason Barker had three hits and three RBIs in the first game and Michael Hanz was 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs in the second game for Freeport (8-4, 12-6).

Grey Moyer singled twice in the second game for Southmoreland (0-12, 1-16).

Greensburg Central Catholic 16, Mapletown 0 – Stephen Kochis doubled and singled in the first-place Centurions’ Section 1-A victory over the Maples (0-12, 2-14).

GCC (11-1, 14-2) also got a triple from Sean Walker and a double from Ian Shipley.

Ligonier Valley 4, Mount Pleasant 2 – Noah Knupp had two singles and knocked in two runs as the Rams (7-4, 9-7) beat the first-place Vikings in a Section 3-3A game.

Sonny Marne singled twice for Mount Pleasant (8-3, 12-5).

Softball

Brownsville 1, Bentworth 0 – Ava Clark tossed a three-hit shutout and scored the game’s only run as the Lady Falcons wrapped up Section 4-2A play with a victory at Bentworth in the completion of a suspended game that began on April 25.

Clark doubled in the first inning, stole third and scored the only run she would need on Lyla Gill’s sacrifice fly. Clark, who struck out 16 and walked one, survived a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the sixth..

Losing pitcher Willow Eckels struck out three in the three innings. Sidney Gonglik, back in the circle after being limited to only playing the field due to an arm injury for almost the entire regular season, tossed the final four innings for the Lady Bearcats after the game resumed and struck out six.

Both teams are playoff bound. Brownsville (7-3, 10-5) finished section play in third place with Bentworth (4-6, 7-9) fourth.

Bentworth 2, West Greene 1 – Sofia Gaussa drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the host Lady Bearcats a non-section win over the Lady Pioneers.

Bentworth (8-9) loaded the bases with one out on three errors to set the stage for Guassa whose walk brought in Nora Lindley.

Winning pitcher Willow Eckels tossed a four-hitter with three strikeouts and three walks.

Payton Gilbert took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Gilbert also singled in the seventh inning for her 100th career hit.

West Greene (13-3) plated its only run in the top of the first when Marissa Tharp singled, advanced to third and escaped a rundown to score.

Mount Pleasant 9, Uniontown 5 – Ella Alakson and Layla Gratzinger singled twice and knocked in three runs as the host Lady Vikings came back to defeat the Lady Raiders in a non-section match-up of playoff-bound teams.

Gina Stanek also had two hits and winning pitcher Danica Trainer hit a solo home run for Mount Pleasant (11-5). Trainer allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts in three innings in relief of Stanek, who gave up two runs on four hits in four innings.

Uniontown held leads of 2-0 and 5-2 before the Lady Vikings exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning which included Trainer’s home run and two-run singles by Alakson and Layla Gratzinger.

Alexa Budner doubled and singled for the Lady Raiders (10-8) who also got a triple from Disaya Craggette and two hits and an RBI from Juliet White. Emmaleigh Noah was the losing pitcher.

Thomas Jefferson 13, Albert Gallatin 2 – Morgan Alisesky smacked a home run and a double and knocked in five runs as the Lady Jaguars (10-2, 12-6) triumphed over the Lady Colonials in a Section 4-5A game.

Olivia Stock had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.

Hannah Dunham singled and scored a run for the Lady Colonials (1-11, 3-13) whose only other hit was a single by Ellie Seese.

Laurel Highlands 2, Albert Gallatin 0 – The Fillies got a run-scoring triple by Emme Cavaliere and an RBI single by Liv McClelland in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a non-section win over the host Lady Colonials.

Winning pitcher Payton Senge hurled the shutout with one walk and 12 strikeouts for Laurel Highlands (7-10).

Jenna Myers, Aurora Clark and Kylee Augustine each had one hit for Albert Gallatin (3-14).

Washington 11, California 10 – Zkyiah Hines drove in three runs with a triple and two singles as the Lady Prexies (1-8, 5-8) edged the Lady Trojans in a Section 4-2A game.

Avery Filby smacked a home run and a double and knocked in three runs for California (0-9, 2-12).
