Local roundup: Lady Pioneers top Waynesburg in matchup of playoff teams
Kendra Tharp had two hits, including a two-run double during a tie-breaking, four-run, sixth inning as Class A West Greene beat visiting Class 2A Waynesburg Central, 9-5, in a non-section clash of WPIAL playoff teams Friday.
The game was tied 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth when Lady Pioneers pinch-hitter Melony Shreve bunted Katie Brudnock to second and she scored what proved to be the winning run on Payton Gilbert’s single. Tharp’s double made it 8-5 and she scored later in the inning to cap the rally.
Tharp scored four runs and also walked and stole a base. Marissa Tharp singled, scored twice and stole four bases for the Lady Pioneers (14-3) who also got RBIs from Kylee Davis and Madelyn Roberts.
Gilbert allowed two earned runs on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts in earning the win.
Losing pitcher Gina Tedrow surrendered four earned runs on five hits with four walks and 12 strikeouts and also knocked in four runs with a home run and a double.
Kylee Schaum also had two hits for the Lady Raiders (11-6) who also got an RBI from Aiden Snider.
Franklin Regional 11, Belle Vernon 0 – Toryn Fulton had two hits, including a triple, and six RBIs as the Class 5A Lady Panthers (14-7) blanked the Class 4A Lady Leopards in a non-section meeting of playoff teams.
Maddie Grisnik had three hits for Belle Vernon (9-11).
Baseball
Frazier 7, Ringgold 2 – Tyler Morrison was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Brant Alekson singled and knocked in three runs as the Commodores defeated the visiting Rams in a non-section game.
Aidan Hardy contributed a double and an RBI for Frazier (9-9). Winning pitcher Dylan Kielbach allowed two runs on seven hits in tossing a complete game.
Demetri Lowe had two singles and an RBI for Ringgold (10-10) which also got a double from Alex Kolano.
Mapletown 6, Monessen 2 – Winning pitcher Spencer Yeager threw a complete game and Daniel Fox had a double and two RBIs as the Maples closed their season on a winning note by knocking off the Greyhounds in a non-section game.
Carson Vanata and Ashton Walker both contributed two hits and an RBI for Mapletown (3-14).
Gio DeStefano had two hits, including a double, and Jakob Bell also doubled for Monessen (1-16).
