Local roundup: Raiders advance with win over Freeport

Tyler Groves recovered after a shaky first inning on the mound and helped himself out with his bat as Waynesburg Central defeated Freeport, 6-2, in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round baseball playoff game at Gateway High School.

Groves gave up run-scoring singles to Chase Walker and Kason Barker in the first inning but shut out the Yellowjackets (13-7) the rest of the way in pitching a complete game. He gave up one earned run on four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Groves also tripled, singled and scored twice.

The fourth-seeded Raiders (16-3) advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinals where they will meet No. 5 South Park in a 7 p.m. game at Peterswood Park.

Waynesburg scored once in the second inning on Kory Taylor’s sacrifice fly then surged in front to stay with a four-run fourth that included a run-scoring double by Jake Stephenson and RBI singles by Grant Pack and C.J. Corwin.

Ethan Kiger capped the scoring with a run-scoring grounder in the fifth.

Austin Surber had two hits for Waynesburg.

Riverview 6, California 2 – Johnny Bertucci pitched a five-hitter and Eli DeVita hit a three-run homer as the Raiders defeated the Trojans in a WPIAL Class 2A first round playoff game at Norwin.

Losing pitcher Caden Monticelli allowed six runs – all unearned – on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Ricky Lawson doubled and scored a run, Kaden Weston had a single and an RBI and Colton Lowden also drove in a run for California (8-10).

Miles Duncan doubled for Riverview (13-6).

South Park 4, Mount Pleasant 2 – Cooper Hochendoner fired a three-hitter as the Eagles knocked off the Vikings (12-7) in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round playoff game at Gateway.

Sonny Marne hit a two-run single for South Park (13-6).

Softball

Shenango 7, Frazier 2 – Kennedi Lynn kept the Lady Commodores off the scoreboard until the seventh inning in pitching Shenango to a WPIAL Class 2A first-round playoff win at Fox Chapel.

Lynn walked one and struck out just two in scattering seven hits and helped her own cause with two hits and an RBI..

Emma Herb had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for the Wildcats (12-9) who also got a double and an RBI from Brianna Aluisia.

Emme Travalena had a triple and two singles for Frazier (13-4) which also got two hits from Grace Vaughn, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning to avert the shutout.

Losing pitcher Addison Hiles allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5 â…“ innings. Hiles and Gracen Hartman had two hits apiece.

Southmoreland 10, Hopewell 9 – The Lady Scotties scored five runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to stun Hopewell in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round playoff game at Trinity Middle School.

Makayla Etling tied with a two-run double and Riley Puckey followed with a game-winning RBI single in the Southmoreland 10th which also included three walks. Hopewell failed to record an out in the inning.

Taylor Doppelheuer had a home run, two singles and three RBIs for the seventh-seeded Lady Scotties who advance to Monday’s quarterfinals against Mohawk in a 3 p.m. game at Montour.

Riverside 14, Waynesburg Central 4 – The Lady Panthers built a 12-0 lead on their way to eliminating the Lady Raiders in a five-inning WPIAL Class 2A first-round playoff game at North Allegheny.

Saeryn Hoover had three hits, including a double, for Riverside (8-9) which also got doubles from Addie Burry and Emma Stockman.

Kolbi Rastoka hit a triple for Waynesburg (11-9) which also got a double from Bria Stephenson.

Joci Cummings was the winning pitcher. Gina Tedrow took the loss.

Keystone Oaks 2, Mount Pleasant 0 — Kennadi Smith pitched a four-hit shutout as the Lady Golden Eagles edged the Lady Vikings in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round game at Waynesburg University.

Danica Trainer, Talia Reho, Autumn Jerkovic-Kuzma and Ella Alesson had the only hits for Mount Pleasant (12-6). Gigi Stanek took the loss.
