High school football roundup: Scotties rout Yough, remain unbeaten under Shoaf

Dustin Shoaf still has yet to taste defeat as a head coach.

Southmoreland upped its record to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the Class 3A Interstate Conference in Shoaf’s first year at the helm with a 41-0 win at his alma mater Yough on Friday night in Week Six football action.

Jackson Mickens had four carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns and Dawson Wolfe threw for 104 yards and a TD for the Scotties.

Averon Darnell had 11 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown and also contributed an interception for Southmoreland. Liam Smith booted a pair of field goals to give him six on the season which leads area kickers.

Smith opened the scoring by connecting from 35 yards out with 6:05 left in the first quarter to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Darnell scored just over a minute later on a 33-yard run to make it 9-0 as the Scotties’ two-point conversion pass failed.

Southmoreland erupted for 32 points in the second quarter.

Wolfe threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Ty Whoric and the Scotties got TD runs of 32 and 58 yards from Mickens and 1 yard by Cam Lee for a 38-0 advantage.

Smith added a 24-yard field with 1:31 left in the half to cap the scoring.

Southmoreland forced five turnovers with Stanley Chapman, Whoric, Wolfe and Jake Hull each recovering a fumble.

The Scotties’ defense held the Cougars (0-2, 2-5) to 90 total yards.

Southmoreland hosts Mount Pleasant in a key conference game in Week Seven. The Vikings and Elizabeth Forward are tied atop the standings with the Scotties at 2-0.

Mount Pleasant 42, Greensburg Salem 29 — Stephen Predajna ran for 142 yards and a touchdown and made seven tackles as the Vikings earned an important Class 3A Interstate Conference win over the visiting Lions.

Brady Brooks scored two touchdowns for Mount Pleasant, which improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Vikings travel to Southmoreland for a showdown between two of the three teams tied atop the standings, with Elizabeth Forward being the other.

Greensburg Salem (0-2, 2-5) scored the first 10 points of the game on Brody Chismar’s 7-yard touchdown run and Alex Swatchick’s 25-yard field.

Brooks’ 63-yard touchdown run pulled Mount Pleasant to within three with 3:40 left in the first quarter.

The Vikings took the lead for good in the second quarter after Richard Shawley’s 15-yard touchdown run and Dane Firmstone’s 55-yard TD pass to Brooks gave the hosts a 21-10 lead.

The Lions sliced the lead to four when Chismar threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Stevey as time expired in the first half.

Firmstone’s 8-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter put the Vikings up 28-17 but Chismar’s 76-yard scoring pass to Max Topper early in the fourth quarter pulled Greensburg Salem within 28-23.

Mount Pleasant extended its advantage to 42-23 on Predajna’s 9-yard touchdown run with 4:45 remaining and Michael Reese’s 10-yard fumble return for a TD with 3:38 left.

Chismar finished the game’s scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Firestone had 16 carries for 92 yards and completed 4 of 8 passes for 61 yards, and also came up with an interception.

Brooks had five rushes for 56 yards and Shawley ran five times for 51 yards.

Ringgold 47, Laurel Highlands 7 — Amoni Ward rushed for 187 yards and scored three touchdowns as the host Rams defeated the Mustangs in a Class 4A Big Six Conference game.

Ward had one rushing TD, one receiving TD and one interception return for a score.

Ward and Nick Stasko, who had 108 rushing yards, both ran for first-quarter touchdowns to put Ringgold (1-1, 4-3) up 13-0.

Marion Jones’ 62-yard touchdown burst in the second quarter and Jackson Nairn’s extra-point kick got Laurel Highlands (0-2, 2-5) within six but the Rams answered with a 17-yard TD pass by Dennis Hawkins to Ward to make it 19-7 at halftime.

Ringgold gradually pulled away in the second half.

Ward’s 50-yard interception return for a touchdown and Hawkins’ 5-yard TD run made it 33-7 after three quarters.

The Rams’ got touchdown runs of 6 yards by Stasko and 23 yards by Dezire Satterfield in the fourth quarter.

Hawkins threw for 109 yards.

Ironton (Ohio) 58, Uniontown 0 — Kayden Edwards threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 64 yards and another score as the Fighting Tigers beat the host Red Raiders in a non-conference game at Bill Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Zayne Williams rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns for Ironton which improved to 6-1.

The Fighting Tigers also got touchdown runs from Braylon Knipp and Wyatt Wolfe. Edwards’ TD tosses went to Braydon Baker and Tyson Harvey. Baker also had a 10-yard fumble return for a score.

Uniontown falls to 2-5.

Chartiers Valley 36, Belle Vernon 35 — Luke Miranda threw a 12-yard touchdown to Owen Weagraff and then connected with Tayshaun Lewis on a two-point conversion pass late in the fourth quarter as the Colts nipped the host Leopards in a Class 4A Big Six Conference battle.

Belle Vernon (0-2, 1-5) had taken a 35-28 lead on fourth-quarter TD runs of 71 and 17 yards by Chace Petrosky, who had four touchdowns and 339 rushing yards in a gallant effort in defeat.

Chartiers Valley (2-0, 6-1) scored first on Michael Lawrence’s 96-yard fumble return for a touchdown just when it looked like the Leopards were ready to take the lead.

Petrosky and Curtis Wade both scored on 3-yard runs in the second quarter sandwiched around Luke Miranda’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Julius Best for the Colts which left the score tied 14-14 at halftime.

Petrosky gave Belle Vernon the lead with a 30-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Miranda tied it again with a 33-yard TD toss to Jack Czarnecki later in the quarter, then threw a 44-yard scoring pass to Damien Holloway in the fourth quarter to put CV in front 28-21 to set the stage for the thrilling finish.

Miranda had 222 passing yards with four TDs.

California 50, Carmichaels 0 — Malachi Peak ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the Trojans’ Class A Tri-County South Conference win at Coaches Field in Carmichaels.

Peak’s 13-yard TD run gave California (4-0, 5-1) a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Trojans rang up 32 points in the second quarter which included TD runs of 24 and 33 yards by Peak and touchdown passes of 60 and 38 yards by Logan Hartley to Alan Dennis. California converted a two-point conversion after every score in the quarter with two on passes from Hartley to Landon Abercrombie, one on a pass from Hartley to Eli Carpenter and one on a run by Dennis.

The Trojans added second-half touchdown runs of 8 and 12 yards by Brandon Meier.

Harley had 129 passing yards with 100 yards going to Dennis.

Will Murray led the Mikes (0-4, 1-5) with 32 rushing yards and Job Smith had a team-high six tackles.

DuBois 38, Connellsville 24 — Trey Wingard threw four touchdown passes in the Beavers’ non-conference win over Connellsville at Falcon Stadium.

Linkon Keller gave the Falcons (1-6) a quick 7-0 when he returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown.

Wingard’s first of three touchdown passes to Jaxson Hanzely made it 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Hunter Brown put Connellsville up 10-7 with a 23-yard field in the second quarter but DuBois (5-2) answered with two long touchdowns on London Duncan’s 83-yard kickoff return and Wingard’s 93-yard pass to Hanzely to give the visitors a 21-10 halftime advantage.

Caden Matthews tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Christian Thomas in the third quarter to get the Falcons within four but DuBois responded with an 80-yard touchdown pass by Wingard to Hanzely later in the quarter.

Wingard’s fourth TD pass, a 27-yarder to Samson Deeb, put the Beavers ahead 35-17 in the fourth quarter.

Matthews’ second touchdown pass to Thomas from 11 yards out made it a two-score game at 35-24.

Maddox Barnes capped the scoring with a 35-yard field goal for DuBois.

Waynesburg Central 36, Carlynton 6 — Zach Jiblits and Roan Tustin each scored a pair of touchdowns as the Raiders rolled past the host Cougars in a Class 2A Century Conference game.

Nate Ricciuti’s field goal put Waynesburg (1-2, 3-4) ahead 3-0 after one quarter and the Raiders got touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards by Jiblits and 9 yards by Tustin in the second quarter to take a 22-0 halftime lead.

Tustin added an 8-yard TD run in the fourth quarter and Jack Ricciuti’s interception return for a touchdown made it 36-0.

Justin Berger’s 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter averted the shutout for Carlynton (0-3, 1-6).

Carrick 46, Brownsville 12 — The Raiders triumphed over the visiting Falcons in a non-conference game at Cupples Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Brownsville took an early 6-0 lead on Kaden Wimmer’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Silas Patterson but Carrick answered with touchdown runs of 26, 12 and 16 yards by Jayden Wise to take an 18-6 advantage into the second quarter.

The Raiders (2-4) went to the air in the second quarter with Treshawn Beasley throwing touchdown passes of 32, 58 and 54 yards to Ke’Juan Johnson.

Max Dieudonne returned the kickoff after Johnson’s first scoring catch 71 yards for a touchdown for Brownsville (0-5) but Carrick still held a 40-12 halftime lead.

Johnson’s 9-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter was the only scoring in the second half.

Exzavier Vargas led the Falcons’ ground game with 16 carries for 51 yards. Jaiden Praster completed 5 of 8 passes for 37 yards. Dieudonne had three receptions for 27 yards and Will Early had four catches for 17 yards.

Leechburg 48, Frazier 14 — Nick Hilty had touchdown runs of 56 and 37 yards and also pulled in a 48-yard TD pass from Jaxson Vargo as the host Blue Devils topped the Commodores in a Class A Eastern Conference game.

Tim Andrasy had touchdown runs of 7 and 53 yards in the first quarter to give Leechburg (3-0, 5-1) a 14-0 lead but Brady Secrest’s 1-yard TD run and Owen Searcy’s extra-point kick got Frazier (1-3, 3-4) within seven before the quarter ended.

The Blue Devils outscored the Commodores 21-0 in the second quarter to take a 35-7 halftime lead.

Tristan Zalenski pulled in a 25-yard TD pass, his second of the game, from Vargo in the fourth quarter to put the hosts ahead 41-7.

The Commodores scored the final touchdown of the game on Secrest’s 4-yard pass to Chase Fulmer in the fourth quarter.

Andrasy (166) and Hilty (101) both had over 100 yards rushing for Leechburg.

Bentworth 42, West Greene 0 — Ben Hays scored five touchdowns four different ways as the host Bearcats cruised past the Pioneers (1-3, 1-6) in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

After a scoreless first quarter, Hays put Bentworth (3-1, 5-2) ahead 21-0 with touchdowns on a 4-yard run, a 40-yard interception return and a 48-yard touchdown return in the second quarter.

Ty Watson’s 9-yard TD toss to Matthew Behanna gave the Bearcats a 28-0 halftime lead.

Hays added third-quarter touchdowns on a 13-yard pass from Watson and a 14-yard run.

Avella 48, Mapletown 12 — The host Eagles outscored the Maples 27-0 in the second half on their way to a Class A Tri-County South Conference win.

Noah Kimberland ran for 168 yards with touchdown runs of 60, 9 and 62 yards for Avella (3-1, 6-1) and Luca Davis added scoring runs of 2 and 6 yards. The Eagles also got touchdown runs of 12 yards from Bryce Wright and 30 yards from Chas Rush.

It was Avella’s second win over Mapletown (0-4, 1-6) this season and it won a non-conference matchup also at home, 41-6, to open the season.

The Maples’ scores came on Ashton Walker’s 34-yard run in the first quarter and Walker’s 32-yard pass to Takota Wilson on the final play of the first half.

Walker had 43 rushing yards and completed 4 of 10 passes for 77 yards.
