High school football roundup: Waynesburg, Frazier win big to secure playoff berths
Teagen Crouse threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score as Waynesburg Central went on the road to smash Sto-Rox, 43-6, in a Class 2A Century Conference game Friday night that wound up clinching a WPIAL playoff spot for the Raiders.
Waynesburg (3-3, 5-5) was awarded a wild-card berth by the WPIAL on Saturday and will play at fourth-seeded South Allegheny this Friday as the No. 13 seed.
Crouse threw TD passes of 39 and 25 yards to Jack Riccuiti, who had four receptions for 105 yards, and ran for a 7-yard score. Zach Giblits had 15 carries for 128 yards, including touchdown runs of 4 and 9 yards.
The Raiders led 20-6 at halftime then exploded for 27 points in the third quarter to go up 47-0.
Waynesburg’s defense accounted for two scores with Caden Fowler recording a sack in the end zone for a safety and Taylor Sproat recovering a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.
Sto-Rox ends its season at 1-5 in the conference and 1-9 overall.
Frazier 57, Springdale 6 — Derek Diamond scored on touchdown runs of 63 and 52 yards in the first quarter to give the visiting Commodores a 14-0 lead and they went on to pound the Dynamoes in a Class A Eastern Conference game to wrap up fourth place and strengthen its case for a wild-card playoff berth.
The WPIAL did award Frazier (4-3, 6-4) a playoff spot on Saturday. The Commodores were seeded 11th and will play at No. 6 California this Friday.
Jordan Mandich followed Diamond’s first two scores with a 27-yard TD run to give Frazier a 21-0 lead after one quarter.
The Commodores took to the air in the second quarter successfully with Brady Secrest tossing touchdown passes of 69 yards to Lincoln Dye, 8 yards to Chris Petruska and 52 yards to Chase Fulmer for a 41-0 halftime lead.
Fulmer ran the second-half kickoff back 75 yards for a touchdown to make it 48-0.
Springdale (0-6, 0-8) avoided the shutout with Will Fowler’s 23-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter.
Frazier’s final two scores came on an 11-yard TD run by Kevin Etling in the third quarter and a safety recorded in the fourth quarter.
Southern Garrett (Md.) 33, Uniontown 13 — The host Rams defeated the Red Raiders in a non-conference game in Maryland.
Uniontown’s touchdown’s came on Brayden Hinzy’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Nate Hice in the first quarter, with Nick Smith kicking the extra point, and David Settles’ 21-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Red Raiders end the season with a 2-8 record while Southern Garrett is 4-4.
Fairmont (W.Va.) 42, Connellsville 7 — The Polar Bears reeled off 36 consecutive points after falling behind 7-7 in a non-conference win over Connellsville at Falcon Stadium.
Jason Walker had a 55-yard touchdown run and a 7-yard TD reception for Fairmont (7-1) which also got scoring runs of 37 and 2 yards from Tarron Boda.
Caden Matthews threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Linkon Keller for the Falcons (2-8).
Thomas Jefferson 58, Laurel Highlands 7 — The host Jaguars (4-1, 8-2) erupted for 39 points in the first quarter and led 58-0 at halftime in cruising past the Mustangs in a Class 4A Big Six Conference game.
Ty Eber had touchdown runs of 44, 4 and 48 yards for TJ, which also scored TDs on a blocked punt return and an interception return and recorded a safety.
Marion Jones scored the only TD for Laurel Highlands (0-5, 2-8) on a 24-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Southmoreland 38, Greensburg Salem 0 — The Scotties capped off a 9-1 regular season under first-year coach Dustin Shoaf with a Class 3A Interstate Conference win over the Lions at Russ Grimm Field.
Southmoreland, which finished second in the conference at 4-1, was seeded seventh for the WPIAL playoffs and hosts No. 10 Hopewell this Friday.
Averyon Darnell paced the Scotties with 16 carries for 93 yards, including touchdown runs of 1 and 13 yards. Dawson Wolfe completed 5 of 9 passes for 64 yards and also ran for a 3-yard score. Makel Darnell had two receptions for 19 yards.
Southmoreland’s other two touchdowns came on Jackson Mickens’ 1-yard run and Cam Lee’s 81-yard kickoff return, his second of the season.
Liam Smith added a 24-yard field goal and was five for five on extra-point kicks.
The Scotties, who led 7-0 after the first quarter, 28-0 at halftime and 35-0 after three, outgained GS (1-4, 3-7) 213 yards to 91.
Carmichaels 54, Mapletown 0 — Will Murray carried 19 times for 269 yards and two touchdowns, and added four two-point conversions as the Mikes rolled past visiting Mapletown in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.
Carmichaels (3-4, 4-5) closed its season with three wins in its last four games to wind up tied for fourth place in the conference with Avella and Beth-Center.
Murray scored on runs of 46 and 79 yards and quarterback Cannon Bupka had rushing TDs of 16 and 33 yards along with a pair of two-point runs.
Stephen Lewis also had two touchdowns for the Mikes on an 8-yard run and an 87-yard kickoff return to start the second half. K.C. Shook accounted for Carmichaels’ other TD with a 6-yard run.
Wyatt Downs had 12 carries for 54 yards for Mapletown (0-7, 1-9).
Beth-Center 26, West Greene 21 — Enzo Brown ran for 212 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Teagan Veatch totaled 157 yards with 83 on the ground and 74 receiving in the Bulldogs’ Class A Tri-County South Conference win over the host Pioneers at Kennedy Field.
Veatch scored on a 2-yard run and a 38-yard reception from Chase Bebout. Brown’s TDs came on runs of 2 and 4 yards with the second one putting B-C (3-4, 3-7) ahead to stay with seven minutes remaining.
Bebout completed 8 of 17 passes for 140 yards.
Brown also had an interception and recovered a fumble on defense. Nick Miller also picked off a pass.
Joel Rizor had 18 carries for 181 yards with touchdowns of 45 and 19 yards, and threw a 19-yard TD pass to Kyle Cunningham to lead West Greene (1-6, 1-8). Jacob Orndoff ran six times for 51 yards. Matthew Wassil pulled in four passes for 48 yards.
Toronto (Ohio) 54, Brownsville 22 — The Red Knights (9-1) built a 54-8 halftime lead in rolling past the host Falcons in a non-conference game at Redstone Field.
Kaden Wimmer completed 6 of 18 passes for 96 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown to Silas Patterson, for Brownsville (0-8). Patterson had three receptions for 104 yards.
Exzavier Vargas had seven carries for 104 yards and touchdown runs of 2 and 72 yards for the Falcons.
Elizabeth Forward 41, Mount Pleasant 7 — The host Warriors wrapped up sole possession of the Class 3A Interstate Conference championship with a victory over the visiting Vikings.
Ryan Messina passed for 236 yards and four touchdowns for EF (5-0, 9-1) and Anthony St. Angelo had three receptions for 118 yards and two TDs.
Arden Roadman scored on a 16-yard touchdown run for Mount Pleasant (2-3, 5-5).
