Deakyn DeHoet again showed not only is he a scoring machine but he can find the end zone in a variety of ways.
The Jefferson-Morgan senior followed up a four-touchdown performance in last week’s win over Chartiers-Houston with an eye-opening 34-point effort against Waynesburg Central to solidify his spot atop the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Touchdown Club standings after Week One.
DeHoet had three rushing TDs and caught a scoring pass against the Bucs last week. Against a Raiders team considered a playoff contender in Class 2A, DeHoet led the Class A Rockets to a 57-30 victory by scoring touchdowns on three runs, one reception and a kickoff return, and tacked on a pair of two-point conversions.
DeHoet’s TD runs were all from distance, covering 17, 66 and 50 yards and his scoring catch came on a 30-yard throw from Triton Farabee. He returned three kickoffs for touchdowns a year ago and notched his first of the 2025 campaign going 85 yards in the first quarter after Waynesburg had tied the score at 7-7. It was the first of two Jefferson-Morgan kickoff returns for scores.
The Rockets’ John Woodward ran for a 2-yard touchdown and also took back a kickoff 55 yards for a score against Waynesburg, giving him 24 points for the season. He’s tied for fifth place with Connellsville’s Linkon Keller who had a 51-yard touchdown run in the Falcons loss at Meadville.
DeHoet upped his total after just two weeks to 58 points, giving him a 22-point lead over second-place Tee Guesman of Albert Gallatin.
Guesman is at 36 points with three rushing TDs in each of the first two weeks. He scored on runs of 8, 1 and 6 in the Colonials’ 54-30 victory over Carrick.
Waynesburg quarterback Teagen Crouse scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the loss to the Rockets and sits in third place at 30 points, four points ahead of Frazier’s Derek Diamond who ran for one TD in a 22-21 loss at Mapletown to give him 26 points.
Following Keller and Woodward in the standings is California’s Malachi Peak who rushed for a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the Trojans’ gutsy 36-32 victory over Cornell to bring his total to 22 points.
Another team that pulled out a hard-earned win was Mapletown, thanks to Carson Vanata. The junior’s 1-yard touchdown run with three seconds left in the game followed by his two-point conversion plunge gave the Maples the one-point victory over the Commodores and his 15-point effort puts him at 21 and in eighth place.
Vanata had a 56-yard touchdown run earlier in the game and added the extra-point kick. He’s the first local player this season to ring up points on a touchdown, a two-point conversion and an extra point in the same game.
In ninth place is AG’s Adam Pegg whose one rushing touchdown pushed his total up to 20.
Five players are tied for 10th place with 18 points, including a pair of players who had three-touchdown games.
Carmichaels quarterback Cannon Bupka had TD runs of 5, 45 and 3 while also tossing a two-point conversion pass in the Mikes’ 38-20 opening win over Sto-Rox. Southmoreland receiver Makel Darnell caught touchdown catches of 21 and 45 yards from Dawson Wolfe and also returned an interception 47 yards for a score in the Scotties’ 49-7 win at East Allegheny.
Also at three touchdowns with 18 points for the season are Frazier’s Chase Fulmer and Waynesburg’s Ross Tennant who each had a TD run Friday.
As for kickers, Waynesburg’s Nick Ricciuti made the first field goal of area players this year with a 27-yarder and also had three extra points to give him 12 points.
There have been eight kickoff returns for touchdowns already this season with four each week. In addition to DeHoet and Woodward last Friday, Albert Gallatin’s Bobby Panos (78 yards) and Belle Vernon’s Chase Petrosky (80) each brought a kick back for a score.
