Local roundup: Lady Trojans rally past BV for flag football win

California rallied from an early two-touchdown deficit to defeat visiting Belle Vernon, 38-34, in girls flag football Section 2 action on Wednesday.

The Lady Trojans got a combined five touchdown passes from quarterbacks Meadow Meier (three) and Hayley Gibson (two), including four to Lila Mitchell for 76 yards. Gibson also had six receptions for a team-high 87 yards.

Aubrey Cellurale made seven catches for 79 yards and a TD, and added a pair of sacks for California, which also got a 55-yard scoring run from Addie Day and an interception from Mitchell.

The Lady Leopards’ opening possession ended with Nazara Nickens catching a touchdown pass from Ariana Moncini. Nickens’ interception on California’s first play from scrimmage led to a four-yard TD run by Tayshia Harvey to give Belle Vernon a two-score advantage.

California responded with consecutive scoring drives capped by touchdown passes to Mitchell from Meier and Gibson.

After the Lady Leopards scored again, Gibson tossed a TD pass to Cellurale late in the second quarter to pull the hosts within 21-20 at halftime.

The Lady Trojans outscored Belle Vernon 18-13 in the second half to pull out the victory with Meier finding Mitchell for two more touchdown passes and Day adding her long scoring run.

SOFTBALL

MOUNT PLEASANT 9, DEER LAKES 4 — Chloe Borelli was 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs as the Lady Vikings stormed back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the host Lady Lancers in a Section 1-3A game.

Jenna Whipkey also doubled and drove in three runs for Mount Pleasant, which also got a double and an RBI from Emma Miller, two hits apiece from winning pitcher Danica Trainer and Talia Reho and a single and an RBI from Aubrie Keslar.

Joey Adams hit a two-run homer in the first inning to Deer Lakes a 2-0 lead and it tacked on another run in the second to make it 3-0.

The Lady Vikings countered with four runs in the third to go in front to stay, and added a run in the fourth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Trainer allowed three earned runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

MOUNT PLEASANT 93, YOUGH 48; MOUNT PLEASANT 131, CALVARY CHAPEL 10; YOUGH 120, CALVARY CHAPEL 15 — The Vikings topped host Yough and Calvary Chapel while the Cougars beat the Lions in a Section 8-2A meet.

Mount Pleasant’s Bryson Bankosh swept the jumping events, finishing first in the high jump (5-8), long jump (20-01) and triple jump (39-09), and Andrew Brodak bested the field in the shot put (41-0) and javelin (130-02).

The Vikings also got winning individual performances from Isaiah Taylor in the 100 (12:01), Tyke Snyder in the 200 (23.99), Aidan Roadman in the 400 (57.30), Damien Ohler in the 800 (2:19.38) and Grayson Gardner in the discus (97-10).

Mount Pleasant swept the relays, winnin the 400 (47.12), 1,600 (3:56.66) and 3,200 (10:03.02).

Yough’s Noah Jurcevich won the 1,600 (4:55) and 3,200 (11:04.83), and Seth Pawlik was first in the 110 high hurdles (18.23) and 300 hurdles (44.70).

Calvary Chapel’s Max Hunter was second in the 800 (2:28.31) and third in the 1,600 (5:26.08).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

MOUNT PLEASANT 110, YOUGH 30; MOUNT PLEASANT 124, CALVARY CHAPEL 16; YOUGH 70, CALVARY CHAPEL 30 — The Lady Vikings rolled to victory over host Yough and Calvary Chapel, while the Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Lions in a Section 8-2A meet.

Individual double winners for Mount Pleasant were Addison Czekaj in the 400 (1:09.70) and the 800 (2:44.60), Kaylea Voke in the 1,600 (6:53.24) and 3,200 (14:31.53), and Victoria Tepper in the high jump (4-4) and triple jump (30-10).

Other individual winners for the Lady Vikings were Carlee Pfeifer in the 200 (30.36), Mia Vanella in the 300 hurdles (1:00.65), Colbie Potoka in the javelin (83-6), and Bella Ankeny in the long jump (14-0).

Mount Pleasant also was first in the 1,600 relay (4:53.82) and 3,200 relay (12:36.76).

Calvary Chapel’s Chloe Dean won the discus (59-11).

Yough’s Britany Baumeister was first in the 100 (13.55) and the 100 high hurdles (18.68). The Lady Cougars also got victories from Carly Fitzgibbons in the shot put (28-8) and their 400 relay team (55.47).
