Local roundup: Makel’s clutch hit lifts Waynesburg over Frazier

Ellie Makel delivered a walk-off, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Waynesburg Central a dramatic 8-7 victory over visiting Frazier in Section 4-2A softball action on Monday.

Makel also hit a solo home run, giving her three RBIs in the game.

Devin Moore had two hits, Brielle Whipkey contributed a double and an RBI and Madi Price added a hit and an RBI for the Lady Raiders (2-1, 5-2).

Winning pitcher Gina Tedrow allowed four earned runs on seven hits with six walks and 15 strikeouts in going the distance.

Grace Polkabla had a double, single and RBI for the Lady Commodores (1-3, 3-5). Morgan Fisher added a double and an RBI for Frazier, which also got one RBI apiece from Zoey Zurenski and Delani Anderson.

Losing pitcher Addison Hiles surrendered three earned runs on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts in toss a complete game. Frazier committed five errors.

CARMICHAELS 11, BETH-CENTER 0 – Bailey Barnyak twirled a five-inning no-hitter and Kenlee Machesky knocked in three runs with a pair of doubles in the Lady Mikes’ Section 2-A win over the visiting Lady Bulldogs (0-3, 1-5).

Carmichaels exploded for 10 runs in the first inning and tacked on one more in the fourth.

Carys McConnell doubled and also drove in three runs and Ke’Lani Chun chipped in with a double and an RBI for the Lady Mikes (3-0, 5-2), who also got a single and an RBI from Payton Plavi and an RBI from Barnyak.

MOUNT PLEASANT 12, YOUGH 6 – Winning pitcher Danica Trainer had two hits, including a home run, and was one of four Lady Vikings with two RBIs in a Section 1-3A win over the host Lady Cougars in a battle for sole possession of first place.

Trainer allowed six runs, all unearned, in the sixth inning when Yough sliced a 9-0 lead down to three. She gave up one walk and six hits with one strikeout. Mount Pleasant committed five errors.

Chloe Borelli also homered and drove in two runs and Sadie Poole had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI for the Lady Vikings (3-0, 4-1), who also got two hits and two RBIs from Emma Miller and a single and two RBIs from Jenna Whipkey.

Kylee Odelli had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs for Yough (2-1, 7-3), which also got two RBIs from Payton Jenkins.

BURRELL 13, SOUTHMORELAND 6 – Cayla Brothers tripled, singled and knocked in four runs for the Lady Bucs in a Section 1-3A win over the Lady Scotties.

Addy Wojtczak added four hits and two RBIs for Burrell (2-1, 4-3).

Zoey Murphy homered and singled in driving in three runs for Southmoreland (0-4, 1-7).

SERRA CATHOLIC 15, GEIBEL CATHOLIC 0 – Kelly Morrissey homered and doubled in the Lady Eagles’ four-inning, non-section win over the Lady Gators (0-2).

Alonna Morton contributed two hits and two RBIs for Serra (2-4). Winning pitcher Gianna Foster allowed one single and struck out seven.

Janiah Darnell had the lone hit for Geibel.

BASEBALL

CAMERON, W.VA. 13, WEST GREENE 6 – Landen Francis had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs as Cameron beat the host Pioneers in a non-section game.

Soier Reed added a double, single and two RBIs for Cameron.

Jacob Rizor singled twice and drove in a run and Logan Shields knocked in two runs for West Greene (0-6), which also got a double and an RBI each from Jackson Grimes and Dylan Hughes.

BOYS TENNIS

WPIAL INDIVIDUAL SINGLES – Three area players are set to compete in the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Tennis Singles Championships beginning at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Allegheny.

Belle Vernon senior Max Henson is the top seed and starts off against No. 16 Alex Weber of North Catholic. Mount Pleasant sophomore Austyn Gross is seeded ninth and will go up against No. 8 Cody Clayton of Central Valley in the first round with the winner taking on either Henson or Weber in the quarterfinals.

Frazier junior Nolan Taucher is seeded 11th and begins against No. 5 Ben Crefeld of Blackhawk.

The first round, quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday with the final and third-place consolation match slated to begin 1 p.m. Thursday, also at North Allegheny.
