Max Henson made sure there was no drama for the second consecutive year.

The Belle Vernon senior repeated as WPIAL Class 2A boys individual tennis champion on Thursday at North Allegheny High School, sweeping away Quaker Valley junior Will Meagher by scores of 6-0 and 6-2.

It was the second year in a row Henson lost only two games in the district final.

Henson won the 2025 title by sweeping North Catholic’s Justin Garvey, 6-1, 6-1, at Bethel Park.

Garvey was eliminated by Henson again on Thursday, but in the semifinals where he lost, 6-1, 6-3, to the Cleveland State recruit.

Henson cruised past Mount Pleasant’s Austyn Gross in the quarterfinals, 10-0, also on Thursday.

Meagher won the first game of the second set before falling down 2-1, then evened the score at 2-2, only to have Henson sweep the last four games.

Henson advances to the PIAA championships which will be held in Hershey at the Hershey Racquet Club on May 22-23, looking to earn his second straight state gold medal.

SOFTBALL

WEST GREENE 15, MAPLETOWN 0 – Caitlin White smacked a double, knocked in five runs and threw an abbreviated no-hitter as the Lady Pioneers romped over host Mapletown in a three-inning Section 2-A game.

White walked one and struck out five of the 10 baters she faced.

West Greene scored six runs in the top of the second and nine more in the third.

Emmaline Beazell was 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs, Kendra Tharp had a triple and an RBI and Madelyn Roberts and Rylee Yeager drove in two runs apiece for the Lady Pioneers (3-1, 6-3), who also got a double and an RBI from Katie Burdnock.

Mila Wrick took the loss for Mapletown (0-4, 1-5).

WASHINGTON 5, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 4 – The Lady Prexies scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and winning pitcher Chessa Henderson made sure the one-run lead stood up with a scoreless seventh in a Section 4-2A victory over the visiting Lady Raiders.

Kali Hagan hit a solo home run, Tateionna Warren had two doubles and an RBI and Mayaja Lee doubled and singled for the Lady Prexies (3-0, 6-1), who also got a double and an RBI from Sophie McCort.

Washington trailed 4-3 when they took advantage of a wild pitch and an outfield error to push across a pair of runs in the sixth.

Henderson gave up eight hits and walked three with 12 strikeouts.

Devin Moore singled and knocked in three runs and Ellie Makel had two hits and an RBI for Waynesburg (2-2, 5-4), which also got two hits apiece from losing pitcher Gina Tedrow and Bria Stephenson.

Tedrow allowed three earned runs on five hits and four walks with 15 strikeouts.

BELLE VERNON 11, WEST MIFFLIN 2 – Willow Wentzell threw a three-hitter and allowed just one earned run and Addy Newman was 4 for 5 to propel the Lady Leopards to a Section 2-4A win at West Mifflin.

Belle Williams had two hits and four RBIS, Brooke Hugland added three hits and two RBIs and Kaylee Sypolt smacked a pair of doubles for Belle Vernon (3-4, 5-5), which also got an RBI from Paisley Hibner.

Kaleigh Tatters tripled and Mia Bey doubled for the Lady Titans (4-2, 8-2).

BENTWORTH 17, CALIFORNIA 1 – Sydney Gonglik went 3 for 3 with a double and five RBIs and fired a three-inning one-hitter as the Lady Bearcats (3-0, 8-0) remained unbeaten with a Section 4-2A win over the Lady Trojans (0-5, 0-8).

Nora Lindley added a double and four RBIs and Zoie McDonald contributed two hits and three RBIs for Bentworth, which also got an RBI each from Addison McVicker and Sofia Gaussa.

Norah Shen had the lone hit and RBI for California.

THOMAS JEFFERSON 10, ALBERT GALLATIN 0 – Adalina Bracco had three hits and three RBIs was the Lady Jaguars (6-1, 7-2) shut out the Lady Colonials in a Section 4-5A game.

Jenna Myers had the only hit for Albert Gallatin (0-7, 0-8).

BASEBALL

FRANKLIIN REGIONAL 9, CONNELLSVILLE 8 – Miles Tomley forced in the winning run when he was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the host Panthers an eight-inning, walk-off non-section win over the Falcons.

Luke Williams, who had already doubled twice and singled, hit a game-tying RBI triple earlier in the inning for Franklin Regional (10-2).

Tim Pirone homered and knocked in three runs for the Panthers, who also got a double, single and two RBIs from Anthony Mitchell and two hits and an RBI from Miles Tomely.

Franklin Regional built a 6-0 lead but Connellsville pulled even with a six-run fifth inning.

The Panthers went back ahead with a run in the bottom of the inning, the Falcons retook the lead, 8-7, with two runs in the seventh but hosts knotted the score again with a run in the bottom of the frame to force extra innings.

Noah Zawislan had two hits and two RBIs and Max Kalp singled and drove in two runs for Connellsville (2-7), which also got two hits from Caden Matthews and one hit and one RBI each from Gradin Hodge, Jett Dunaway and Linkon Keller.

TURKEYFOOT VALLEY 5, MAPLETOWN 4 – Corban Stimmel singled and came around to score the winning run on an error in the Rams’ non-section, walk-off victory over the visiting Maples.

Winning pitcher Lee Bowers surrendered four unearned runs on seven hits with no walks and nine strikeouts as Turkeyfoot (1-5) won its first game of the season.

Kaleb Evosevich and Careryn Shaffer each had two hits and an RBI for Mapletown (0-8).

WASHINGTON 8, WAYNESBURG CENTRAL 4 – Caleb Patton drove in three runs with a triple and a single as the visiting Prexies knocked off the Raiders in a Section 4-3A game.

Washington led 7-1 when Waynesburg rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to slice the gap to three but could get no closer.

William Callan had a triple and two RBIs for the Prexies (3-3, 6-4), who also got a triple from winning pitcher Tristan Coney and two hits apiece from Isaac Charnik and Noah Patton.

Coney gave up one earned run on six hits with four innings. Patton earned the save with three scoreless innings of relief.

Grant Pack had three hits and an RBI and CJ Corwin added two hits and two RBIs for Waynesburg (2-2, 2-7), which also got a double and a single from losing pitcher Jarett Tretinik and a double from Kory Taylor.

Tretinik gave up seven runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in five innings.
