Lady Commodores top Waynesburg, clinch playoff spot
Emma Essington’s bat and Addison Hiles’ arm helped Frazier earn another trip into the WPIAL softball playoffs.
Essington blasted a home run and a double in going 3 for 3 with four RBIs and Hiles allowed just one earned run as the Lady Commodores clinched at least a share of fourth place in Section 4-2A with a 12-2, five-inning victory Wednesday.
Frazier, which has won four of its last five games, improves to 5-4 in the section and 7-6 overall.
The Lady Commodores scored three runs in both the first and second innings to go up 6-0 and led 10-2 when they pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with Emme Travalena’s RBI single ending the game on the mercy rule.
Travalena had three hits, including a double and Hiles was 3 for 3 for Frazier, which also got a double and two RBIs from both Grace Polkabla and Morgan Fisher.
Hiles gave up seven hits and and three walks with five strikeouts.
Losing pitcher Gina Tedrow hit a solo home run for the Lady Raiders (3-5, 6-7).
CARMICHAELS 10, CHARLEROI 0 – Bailey Barnyak followed up her no-hitter against West Greene on Friday with a five-inning one-hitter against the Lady Cougars (3-9) in a non-section game.
Carys McConnell was 3 for 3 with a pair of triples and Kenlee Machesky also was 3 for 3 with a double for Carmichaels (9-3), which also got two doubles from Ke’Lani Chun.
MOUNT PLEASANT 2, YOUGH 1 – Danica Trainer pitched a four-hitter and drove in what proved to be the winning run with a ground out in a two-run first inning as the first-place Lady Vikings (9-0, 11-1) held off the visiting Lady Cougars (6-3, 11-5) in a Section 1-3A game.
Trainer surrendered four hits and four walks with four strikeouts.
Sadie Poole had two of the Lady Vikings’ three hits, including a double.
SERRA CATHOLIC 18, GEIBEL CATHOLIC 0 – Gianna Foster hit a home run and two doubles in the Lady Eagles win over the Lady Gators.
